Monopoly X: How Top-Secret World War II Operations Used the Game of Monopoly to Help Allied POWs Escape, Conceal Spies, and Send Secret Codes
Monopoly X: How Top-Secret World War II Operations Used the Game of Monopoly to Help Allied POWs Escape, Conceal Spies, and Send Secret Codes | Philip E Orbanes
4 posts | 1 read | 6 to read
An amazing true story of World War II that reveals how British and American military intelligence successfully smuggled escape aids into German P.O.W. camps hidden inside Monopoly game boards, and also the game's surprising role in espionage.Monopoly X is the fascinating true story of what is arguably the most unusual and best-kept secret operation of World War II. The masterminds at England's top-secret MI-9, and later America's MIS-X, created a special version of the popular game, hiding tools, maps, and money within game boards--delivered by fictitious charities--to captured Allied servicemen held at gunpoint behind barbed wire in German prison camps. This ingenious and complex plot, dubbed "Monopoly X," was never discovered by the Nazis and led to many successful Allied breakouts. The creation and consequences of Monopoly X remained a deep secret through the war and for decades after, until now. For the first time, Phillip E. Orbanes tells the full story of the people behind this clandestine program--how it was devised, implemented, and used to great success. A tale of derring-do as compelling as the World War II classic, The Great Escape, Monopoly X is an amazing war story of Allied intelligence services, resistance forces in Europe, heroes and heroines, a notorious traitor, and the pivotal role a seemingly innocent board game played in secret codes and espionage.Monopoly X includes a 16-page black-and-white photo insert.

I first learned that Monopoly board games were used in WWII from, “The Ways We Hide” by Kristina McMorris. Her book was good and I‘d recommend it, but I wanted more of the Monopoly story. Imagine my surprise when I discovered this book 🤩 If you‘re looking for a fascinating, less than 300 page non-fiction read, THIS IS IT! I want to tell everyone I meet now about this amazing, almost lost forever, story from WWII.

When hubby is having his friends over to play video games (I swear he‘s an adult, but definitely an ‘elder millennial‘ 🤣) but it‘s too hot to read outside, we improvise by reading in our bedroom by the window and 2 fans blowing on us 🤣🤗👍

Bookwormjillk I tried to read on the porch but it was just too hot. 2mo
Aims42 @Bookwormjillk Right? It‘s hot, it‘s humid, it‘s gross 🥵 I am living for the weather beginning on Wednesday. Highs in the 70‘s 🤩🤩🤩 2mo
TheBookHippie @Bookwormjillk I tried to read outside with my lemonade… I lasted 5 whole minutes… 😬🥵 2mo

KadaGul Weather 🤬😡🤬!! The Chicago weather sucked this year. Last year, we were grilling and chilling from May to mid-July. But this year? It was freezing until the first week of June, and then it just got super hot and humid or ridiculously high in pollen. #GlobalWarmingIsReal 2mo
Aims42 @KadaGul You are so right! 😩 I told my coworker in mid-June that it was too early for this silliness BUT THEN IT DIDN‘T GO AWAY 😭😭😭 Now when we have a seasonably warm day with low humidity I‘m like, “what‘s up? Is there a big storm blowing in??” 🤨 Your hashtag is spot-on accurate 🎯 2mo

Aims42 @TheBookHippie It is! I can‘t recall another summer this bad. I remember heatwaves in the 1990‘s but this is a whole other beast. And a beast that isn‘t going to get better or go away 🫣 2mo
