Killer's Payoff
Killer's Payoff | Ed McBain
3 posts | 3 read | 1 to read
He appeared to be a decent, upright, honest citizen.... And yet appearances can be more than deceiving in the world of blackmail and extortion. The shocking gangland-style murder of known blackmailer Sy Kramer begs the question: which of Kramer's marks had given him his very last payoff? A politician's beautiful wife with a deadly secret? An overly interested ex-con? A wealthy soft-drinks executive? Or the mystery person who had fattened Kramer's wallet by the thousands? The detectives of the 87th Precinct must break the chain that links the dead man's associates and single out a killer -- before someone else cashes it in.

Let‘s be real - these are a product of their time (late 1950s) and they don‘t age particularly well (Hello, Misogyny!). BUT, if you can look past the depictions of women, they are good examples of mid-century noir/police procedurals, and they are fun. I may even have cackled at the ending. The audiobook narrator on 1.4 speed is practically perfect for the book and genre.

I read for about 30 minutes before work and fell 😴. I am hoping that, with a little help from coffee, I will sustain consciousness long enough to put a dent in my #24b4Monday. #dogsoflitsy

Andrew65 That‘s always the problem with weekends, exhausted from work and fall asleep. 💤 4y
Geenie Yess! @Andrew65 I got 17 minutes done. 😂😔 4y
Andrew65 @Yoshi-and-a-book Saturday evenings do that to me after a week at work. Think I must spend 50 hoiurs at school a week plus all the hours I put in at home. (edited) 4y

Geenie @Andrew65 I work at a pharmacy. There should be a drug that enables one to read without inducing inevitable sleep. 4y

A satisfying early installment in the 87th Precinct series. Mostly blackmail, with just a little bit of murder. Cotton Hawes provides some private-eye glitz and glamour, while the rest of the squad diligently carries out its duties.
