Brighton Belle
Brighton Belle: A Mirabelle Bevan Mystery: | Sara Sheridan
10 posts | 7 read | 10 to read
1951. Brighton. With the excitement of the war over and the Nazis brought to justice at Nuremberg, Mirabelle Bevan (retired Secret Service) thinks her skills are no longer required. After the death of her lover she moves to the seaside to put the past behind her and takes a job as a secretary at a debt collection agency run by the charismatic Big Ben McGuigan. But when confronted by the case of Romana Laszlo, a pregnant Hungarian refugee, Mirabelle discovers that her specialist knowledge is vital. With enthusiastic assistance from the pretty insurance clerk down the corridor, Vesta Churchill, Mirabelle follows a mysterious trail of gold sovereigns, betting scams and corpses to a dark corner of Austerity Britain where the forces of evil remain alive and well.

Panpan

I think this is my first pan. Picked this up on the strength of the connection with my birthplace. But the writing is clunky, the plot not terribly exciting, and the descriptions of the characters of colour are a bit dodgy. Also the main character does something at the end which they would never have done, and isn‘t justified at all. End of this author for me !

#20series20days The Mirabelle Bevan series

In 1951, former Civil Service personal secretary Mirabelle Bevan, mourning the death of her married lover, a wartime SOE operative, takes over a debt collection agency in Brighton. Chasing up unpaid bills frequently leads her into murder investigations and close contact with Superintendent Alan McGregor. Strong characters and lots of period detail make for enjoyable reads.

Ruthiella Again, totally unknown to me but it sounds like a delightful series! 4y

What is happening? I have now read three not-so-good books in a row. Need to break the spell!! The tagged one, Murder on Astor Place and Kick Kennedy did just not do it for me, and I thought I would love them all 😢

CarolynM I hope Brighton Belle isn't one of the books you haven't liked? I really enjoy this series (not sure about this cover, though) 7y
Tove_Reads @CarolynM Unfortunately yes. Did not warm up to he characters at all. I also felt like I‘ve read several similar stories before. 7y
