Death Valley | Melissa Broder
post image

July was my slowest reading month yet, and that was absolutely because I downloaded the Scrabble app. Don‘t worry: I‘ve since deleted it and have taken back my life. 😅

Death Valley was my favorite July read followed by Blue Sisters. A strong fiction month, which has been rare this year!

ErikasMindfulShelf I loved Blue Sisters. Death Valley is on my shelf. Moving it up my tbr. 1w
monalyisha @ErikasMindfulShelf It‘s very weird and certainly won‘t be for everyone but it hit all the right notes for me! All my book club friends complained, “I thought she would‘ve spend more time inside the cactus.” 😅 But I liked that it was ambiguous and ambitious, funny and flawed, cerebral and surreal. Good luck! 1w

June ended up being more about quantity than quality. I‘m still surpassing my reading goals but I didn‘t LOVE anything this month (other than Anne, of course, which was a reread). Cunning Folk seemed like it was going to really do it for me, for a while, but it fell short stylistically.

Better luck next month, me!

Did May feel extra-long to anyone else?

Idle Grounds was my favorite! Sneaky & feverish.

Nettle & Bone is a *magical* listen.

I Hope This Finds You Well was a delightful change of pace.

Unraveling, though a reread, was spun as well as I remembered. Fascinating & timely, in a world that desperately needs more climate justice.

Marmalade is great in small spoonfuls. Dip in & out.

My heart is still recovering from Juno Loves Legs. It‘s visceral.

Avanders May always feels extra long to me… I don‘t know why 🤷‍♀️ 2mo
willaful @Avanders Are you a parent? It was a million years for me, with my daughter all stressed out before finals... 2mo
monalyisha @willaful No, but that totally makes sense! 2mo

The variety encapsulated by my reading month makes me happy. It‘s a pretty accurate snapshot of my literary life as a whole.

StoryGraph tells me I‘m 14 books ahead of my reading goal. It‘s possible I set the bar too low but it still gives me a flush of pleasure!

vivastory I'm curious: what format did you you read the John Green in? 3mo
monalyisha @vivastory Audiobook, which I wouldn‘t change! 3mo
ravenlee I started setting my StoryGraph goals ridiculously low because it was giving me anxiety. 🤣 Now I can feel confident all year because I hit my goals in January. 3mo
willaful I also enjoyed the audiobook of The Anthropocene Reviewed. 3mo

My March reads, roughly in order of enjoyment (from least to greatest). The bottom row features all of my favorites.

I keep shocking myself with how many books I‘m managing to read each month. Either this is my new norm, thanks to deleting my social media accounts (and what a confirmation of my choices that would be!) or it‘s going to taper off at some point. With the gradually warming weather, I‘m starting to let myself dream of beach reading…

tpixie Great job! I‘m reading a 600 page book that‘s taking forever- my stats will be different this year! Audiobooks are moving along though! 4mo
monalyisha @tpixie That‘s ambitious! I tend to avoid lengthier tomes. Maybe I‘m still recovering from reading Moby Dick twice in college (and once afterwards — for fun 😅🐋). You‘ve got this! 4mo
tpixie @monalyisha yes, normally I avoid long books also. I was reading it as part of my research to go along with Patti Callahan Henry‘s new book The Story She Left Behind. And now I‘m just being stubborn wanting to actually finish it ! 4mo

I‘ve felt sort of scattered and dissatisfied lately; I think those feelings have transferred to my reading life, too.

For the second month in a row, I read more than I typically do. But the vibe is off. 🙈

I did read two books I absolutely adored: Moominland Midwinter and Giving Up the Ghost. I hope that same passionate energy guides me and focuses me in March.

I‘m still reading the last two. But I‘ll be done before the clock strikes noon!

Kristin_Reads I loved the Barbara Brown Taylor book! 5mo

Using these monthly graphics as another way to track my reading.

I read 9 books in January, which is high for me but January always skews high. I credit the motivation of a New Year and my commitment to #AuldLangSpine! Three of the books were fairly short, as well.

The Witching Year was my favorite. Hard to beat that premise in terms of my interests, and her writing is clear, fun, colloquial, and sometimes poetic. Fire Exit was also a stand-out!

TheBookHippie People keep telling me to read A WellTrained Wife… 😵‍💫😩🤷🏻‍♀️😝 6mo
monalyisha @TheBookHippie It was certainly impactful! I‘m still thinking about it. Her writing is a little uneven, though, and it was far too heavy for my state of mind right now. 6mo
TheBookHippie @monalyisha I don‘t need to read what I‘m surround by. 😂 and certainly not now. 6mo

monalyisha @TheBookHippie She intentionally published now, to make the threat abundantly clear to those who may not understand how real and pervasive it is (fundamentalists dedicating themselves to create a literal “army” to bring to the polls). I respect her purpose and her persistence, for sure. But yeah — it‘s such a balancing act between educating ourselves, motivating ourselves to act, and protecting (all the different aspects of) ourselves! 6mo
TheBookHippie @monalyisha I‘ve been telling people since 1982 how this is. No one listened. Here we are. Mostly people want me to read it to see that I was right I already know I was right. 6mo
monalyisha @TheBookHippie Sometimes, it really doesn‘t feel good to be right. ❤️‍🩹 6mo
