Somehow, this memoir surrounded by the book Middlemarch has not veered into As You Like It, Romeo & Juliet, and (of all things - god help me*) Hamlet.

GingerAntics @readinginthedark it‘s never explicitly said, but it is alluded to that they have probably known each other since they were kids. Reasonably, they may have been betrothed to each other until Hamlet started acting strangely. Hamlet‘s words alone suggest they were probably sleeping together before he went to University and/or when he came home to visit, but since his father‘s death they haven‘t (maybe he‘s had a headache). 6y

readinginthedark "Maybe he's had a headache." ? That's so funny! I think you're right. The modern movie interpretation with Ethan Hawke and Julia Stiles definitely plays it off that way. 6y

GingerAntics @readinginthedark 😂The Gregory Dorian version with David Tennant plays it that way as well. It‘s not quite as overt as the Ethan Hawk version, but that intimacy and familiarity is definitely there. He‘s got all that anger and rage in there. He‘s probably clenching his teeth. I‘m betting on a headache.🤣 6y

I loved Rosalind‘s epilogue. It was an interesting way to end the play. I‘m not sure who I would call my favourite character, or my favourite part. This started one way, and ended oddly to me. Definitely not my favourite Shakespeare play.

Jess_Read_This I‘m not quite through this act but am agreeing, not one of my favs either. I‘m rather glad to have read it because I think now certain references such as “all the the world is a stage” I understand the background now. (edited) 7y

Once again, it seems Shakespeare is delivery some of his most profound lines through the mouths of professional fools. Act 5 made me like Touchstone a bit more. At least it seemed Audrey did actually love him and he actually loved her...I think.

Jess_Read_This This reminds me of some biblical passage.. 🤔like a proverbs or something. I love that he has the court fool saying this too. 7y

GingerAntics @Jess_Read_This once you said that I started thinking the same thing. I googled it, and it appears that there are a few places in Proverbs that talk about fools, but the second half is always different. It definitely could be inspired from that, though. Good thinking. 7y

Act 3 wasn‘t my favorite. I particularly didn‘t like this last scene with Silvius/Phoebe/Rosalind (as Ganymede). I thought Rosalind was very unkind to Phoebe and then Phoebe just goes and falls for him (her...)! I was also really irritated with the way Touchstone treated Audrey and then still expected her to marry him.

Lcsmcat I think it depends on how it‘s played. With a wink and a nudge, it‘s Rosalind saying what she thinks Ganymede would say - expressing the male prejudice. 7y

I guess Touchstone is having a hard time adjusting to the shepherd life. In my head, he‘s still the funniest, happiest shepherd in the forest, though. lol

GingerAntics @readinginthedark oh I totally agree. I like the Touchstone in my head. I‘m really not a fan of the Touchstone in the play at this part. He‘s become less of a jester and more of a schemer. I‘m hoping he goes back in the next act. (I haven‘t started it yet. I will as soon as I get all of these papers graded.) 7y

readinginthedark Yeah, I think I cast him originally as a humorous sidekick friend to the girls who was motivated by some of the same reasons as themselves for leaving. But now I think he just left because it was something to do. He seems more well-suited to court with his jests, laziness, and irrepressible desire for female “companionship.” (edited) 7y
