This is an eloquent and deceptively simple collection of stories but this talented author. The characters are ordinary people caught in snippets of their ordinary lives. The prose is unfussy and voice of each character clear. I am disappointed in myself for letting this astounding collection sit unread on my shelf for such a long time. #AxeTheStacksApril⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️1/2

Ruthiella Boy, you are sure handy with an axe! 🤪I‘ve not finished one yet! I LOVED this collection and normally short stories leave me cold. (edited) 3y
Come-read-with-me @Ruthiella Lol! I‘m on spring break, my husband is out of state visiting family, and I‘m at home taking care of two very old dogs who sleep at least 20 hours a day. My only responsibility is reading. When I start school tomorrow my numbers will go way down! 3y
IuliaC I enjoyed this one very much too 3y
SqueakyChu This was a fabulous short story collection. Very highly recommend! 3y

This book got off to a slow start but the depth of the storyline and the delicacy of the writing won me over by midpoint. The story presents an all too plausible picture of slavery and the horrors faced by a fiercely independent woman forced to live under the tyranny of an unjust society. A great debut for this author. ⭐️⭐️⭐️1/2 #AxeTheStacksApril

A book that celebrates the search for belonging and self as well as family and displacement. The use of an earthquake as a metaphor for the challenges faced by the author worked well and provided a great framework for the events of her life. I‘m looking forward to reading more by this talented author. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ #AxeTheStacksApril

Megabooks Great review! Totally agree! 3y

Learning to love and care for yourself can be a challenging journey. I watched my Mum deny herself the things she wanted because “someday” she would take the time to practice self-care. She was always busy taking care of others and put herself last. I wish she‘d been able to read this book. It is funny, insightful, and brutally honest. So, Today I‘m going to buy myself some “lilies,” whatever they may be! 🌸🌸 #AxeTheStacksApril

robinb I feel like a lot of moms were like this...I know mine is...she's now 82, and I often think about all that she's missed in her life because she put everyone else first. 3y
TheLudicReader My mom was the same, always doing for others and never herself. Always putting off vacations or things she might like to do. She died at 67and I always felt like she cheated herself, although she did love to do for and give to those she loved. 😞 3y
Come-read-with-me @robinb It‘s a generational enculturation that I hope we can change for future generations of women. 3y

Come-read-with-me @TheLudicReader I understand this completely. My Mum was the same way. Just as she was going to “start doing things for myself” she had a massive stroke and spent her remaining years bed ridden. I‘m trying to learn not to wait. 3y
ShelleyBooksie My mom is the same! I will have to get her this book! Does it have e a lot.of f- bombs in it? 3y
Come-read-with-me @ShelleyBooksie The f-word is popular, but the content is really good. If I could give this to my Mum I‘d probably need to find a way to strike through those words! 3y
rather_be_reading loved this one! 3y
