Mehso-so

The author of this book never knew her maternal grandmother, Suzanne, who abandoned her children when they were young. After her death in 2009, Barbeau-Lavalette hired a private detective to learn more and with the knowledge she gained, she wrote a fictionalized account of her grandmother‘s life. Suzanne is written in second-person and in short vignettes, which I loved, but overall, it was just an okay read for me. #CanadaReads2019 #CanadaReads

The well-deserved winner of #CanadaReads2019, By Chance Alone is an incredible memoir of strength, resilience, and gratitude. The author, Max Eisen, was only fifteen when he arrived at Auschwitz-Birkenau, and as with all survivor‘s accounts, the horrors he experienced there are incomprehensible. Stories like his are so important, especially as anti-Semitism in on the rise and the voices of Holocaust survivors fade away. #CanadaReads Full review ⬇️

Homes: A Refugee Story | Abu Bakr al Rabeeah, Winnie Yeung
post image
Pickpick

Homes is the story of the al Rabeeah family, as told by one of the children, Abu Bakr, and written by his ESL teacher, Winnie Yeung. Bakr was only 10 when violence erupted around him, and the book effortlessly contrasts the horrors of war with the normalcy of growing up. The story is simply told, making it accessible to all. Stories like this are so necessary, especially as anti-immigrant sentiments are on the rise. #CanadaReads2019

JennyM Lovely review - sounds a very important and timely read. 6y
Melissa_J I think Canada Reads is going to come down to this one and By Chance Alone. My pick is the Eisen book, but this one would be a great choice, too. I also liked Brother, so am happy to see my top three are the three still standing 😊 6y

candority Thank you @JennyM! It definitely is! 6y
candority @Melissa_J I think so too! I just started reading By Chance Alone this morning, but I can already see how impactful it will be. Brother has an important message too, but I have a feeling that one of the non-fiction books will come out on top. It‘ll be interesting to watch! 😊 6y
StephanieMarie I am thinking that it will be By Chance Alone based on the defenses so far, Zhiya is such a powerful speaker! Personally I really can't decide between the remaining three, I loved all of them and they're all so important. 6y
candority @StephanieMarie Yes, she is, but I‘ve noticed that while other panellists compliment the book being discussed, she tends to focus on flaws and bring the conversation back to her book? She has great points, but her approach feels way more argumentative than the other. Maybe that‘s just me though - this is my first year watching the debates, so I don‘t know what the typical dynamics are! It will definitely be a tough decision for the panellists! 6y
StephanieMarie @candority that's definitely a common thing to do. I actually noticed Lisa doing it more with Brother. I've been watching 3 years now and that's definitely not the most argumentative I've seen, there can be some serious tension lol! I think it will be a close call for sure! I just like that Zhiya backs up her arguments with so many facts. 6y
candority @StephanieMarie Good to know! Yeah, she does do a good job of backing up her arguments. I think it will get more intense today and tomorrow! 6y
candority @StephanieMarie I take back what I said about Ziya previously! Her passion for the book has become very obvious, and I see how I misinterpreted her demeanour previously the more I watch the debates. 6y
StephanieMarie @candority She and Chuck both made me cry today! 6y
candority @StephanieMarie Ugh, me too 😭 So powerful! 6y

It‘s the first day of the Canada Reads debates! I caught the last half of the debate, and was happy with the book that was eliminated (tagged as a spoiler in the comments). I‘m still reading the contenders, but I might be able to finish them by the end of the week! #CanadaReads #CanadaReads2019

Blueberry Can't wait! I will watch it online later today. 6y
llwheeler Lol, I checked your spoiler tag... my hold on this just came in today, earlier than I expected... maybe that's why 😂 6y

candority @llwheeler Ahaha it could be 😂 I didn‘t hate the book, but it was difficult to get through. I‘m curious to hear what you think about it! 6y
JacqMac It wasn‘t my least favourite book, but I‘m ok with it being eliminated. I wish Canada Reads was longer than four days. lol 6y
candority @JacqMac I agree! It would be nice if they opened it up for public voting as well! 6y

This is an unflinching, yet emotionally distant, memoir which chronicles the author‘s dysfunctional Chinese-Canadian family. Several members of her family suffer from undiagnosed mental illnesses, which they believe are caused by Chinese ghosts. Her memoir is filled with abuse and neglect, and while I commend her for writing so openly, I was hoping for more reflection/growth, and the book would have benefited from some editing #CanadaReads2019

Bailedbailed

I tried. And then I tried again. And again. I don‘t mind the second person narration. Or the snapshots of life. But I hate Suzanne. She is such a narcissist. I can‘t do narcissists. She reminds me of someone I don‘t care to remember. I just don‘t want to spend one more minute with her. So I‘m letting her go.

Melissa_J We are both #teambail today! 6y
JacqMac @Melissa_J Lol I can understand why you bailed. I don‘t like bailing on a Canada Reads book either. But sometimes you have to do it for you. 6y
academiconbreak I couldn't deal with the first page even, with the whole sucking hungrily at her mother's nipple business. I started Brother last night. It's beautiful. 6y

This family. So dysfunctional. I cringed a lot. I found it very hard to read about the abuse. It was so raw and ugly. Mental illness does not excuse abuse. The story does give some insight into what happens when mental illnesses go untreated and what happens when people don‘t trust “western medicine”. The author seemed a bit detached and used dark humor a lot. Understandably though. It had to be very painful to share.

Melissa_J I‘ll be starting this one tomorrow. Wonder what I‘ll think of it? 6y
JacqMac @Melissa_J I wonder, too. I lliked it and didn‘t like it at the same time. I‘m glad I read it, but I‘m not sure I‘d recommend it. 6y
candority I feel that same way as you, @JacqMac! 6y
