Ham on Rye: A Novel | Charles Bukowski
post image
Pickpick

"I was just a 50-cent turd floating around in the green ocean of life."

This was my first #Bukowski and I enjoyed the hell out of it. The semi-autobiographical Hank Chinaski is kind of an asshole. He's crude, brutal, and cynical, yet oddly endearing. He fights, he drinks (A LOT), he devours great literature. I need more, please!

#Factotum is on deck.

batsy Can relate to turd metaphor. I've never read him and it's clear that I should... 7y
britt_brooke @batsy 😆 There are some pretty fantastic lines in this book. This was my first time reading him (well, I've read one of his poetry collections, so this was my first novel). I was surprised by how much I liked it! 7y
ValerieAndBooks I've only read his poetry-- need to check this out!! 7y

rubyslippersreads I'm probably in the minority, but that first line lets me know he's not for me. 😏 7y
britt_brooke @ValerieAndBooks I need to check out more of him, period! 😁 His only poetry I've read is the collection On Love, but I liked it. 7y
britt_brooke @rubyslippersreads He's definitely not for everyone. Very crude at times. 7y
rubyslippersreads @britt_brooke Crude is not for me. But I think he did like cats. 😸 7y
britt_brooke @rubyslippersreads Yes, there's a whole collection about them! 😻 7y
StephBengtson I need to reread this.. and everything he's ever written. 7y
alvingregorio I've only read "Post Office" and it was some crazy stuff. 7y
britt_brooke @alvingregorio This one was a little crazy, too. I'm reading Factotum next, then Post Office, etc. My plan is to read the Henry Chinaski stories in chronological order. 7y
KittenHoliday I love this book! There are some hilarious quotes too! 7y
