I paused reading in May 2018 after getting to some "problematic" poems (I posted about that at the time if you scroll a bit down the book profile, and @vivastory gave me some useful insights). I put it back on the shelf to see if I needed a bit of distance to return to it, but, no: clocking it today gave me a negative reaction, so I'm #deshelving.

Bookwomble Poems justifying domestic abuse and fantasising (at least hopefully only fantasising) about rape aren't my cup of tea. There are poems about other things, some of them very good, but I couldn't get past the "ick" ones. 2w
Suet624 I remember being repulsed when I first read any of his work back in the 80‘s. Seemed like a lot of men I knew at the time liked what he had to say, which was very disheartening. 2w

Bookwomble @dabbe This was a seven-year slow bail 😄 2w
Bookwomble @Suet624 It is disheartening, indeed 🫤 2w
Graywacke I read a collection of his. It‘s all attitude and cigarettes. I don‘t remember abuse, but he clearly was undoing something. My issue was it got to feel repetitive. 2w

Factotum | Charles Bukowski

A fairly detestable character but it was an easy enough, kinda interesting read over a few days. Short bursts of a certain way of life set during 1940s LA and NY. Alcoholism, horse racing, womanizing, a detest of work (which I understand but dude, sometimes, suck it up!), trying to be a Man with a capital M. I felt mixed, but it wasn‘t a terrible read. Flipped between so-so and pick but pick it is, some of the paragraphs and writing really good.

This book is funny but crude, and I couldn't put it down. It's not for everyone.

My favourite, and I love the ambiguity over the interpretation (I rarely agree with historians when it comes to most topics on literature and poetry, and this time is no different) 🤍🤎.

Went to Word on the Water on Friday, the London book barge, and picked up 2 news books. The first a small Bukowski book called Notes of a Dirty Old Man and the second called Seven Brief Lesson on Physics by Carlo Rovelli 💫 📚
