Mehso-so

I‘m going backwards in Thorpe‘s writing and this is the third book I‘ve read of hers. While I‘ve quoted this book several times I have to say this book felt a little too ambitious. A trip to Lithuania in honor of his grandmother who escaped from a concentration camp with a teen who has experienced a psychotic break, the story covers a lot of ground and feels a bit too much. I was captivated while reading it but ultimately disappointed.

BarbaraBB I felt the same! 3d

The author put this quote both in her novel and in her acknowledgments. It hit me hard each time I read it. A great description of my current understanding of the world.

“No one seemed amazed that in Lithuania, in order to deal with the end of communism, local artists had made a statue of Frank Zappa.… And now Frank Zappa has become sort of a patron saint, if you will, of Uzupis, but also of Vilnius and even Lithuania as a whole.”

Who knew?

Suet624 @BarbaraBB @leftcoastzen I had no idea either. I proceeded to google the crap out of that nugget of information. Where the quote says 'in order to deal with the end of communism' they are talking about the fact that when Lithuania became independent of the Soviet Union all of the statues of Lenin were torn down and there were many empty plinths. So they decided to put Zappa on one of the empty plinths. 4d

I absolutely enjoyed this book! I am so glad I decided to read this even after disliking the author's other book 'L.A Weather' that I read in 2024.

I found this story to be enticing right from the opening and in between the different timelines, Escandon kept my interest with both the story and the characterizations of not just Libertad but all of the characters.

I‘m posting one book a day from my massive collection. No description, no reason for why I want to read it (some I‘ve had so long I don‘t even remember why!). Feel free to join in!

Much like Sarah Dessen's Dreamland, I'm glad I didn't read this when it first came out, as it wouldn't have been as impactful. A little hard to read at times due to the emotions and trauma, but I appreciate the raw honesty and the ending, as well as the characters.
