What I wanted, what I felt owed, was some clear place in the hierarchy of those he loved.

Liv‘s dad, who ran away to Greece, asks her to help him w/ his Atlantis documentary. When she gets there, she meets Theo, her father‘s charming “prod g”/assistant. Will she ever understand her dad? Will all the alone time w/ Theo led to something?

This one was cute. It was just a little slow & long for me. I also wanted a little more romance. It was interesting learning more about theories on Atlantis tho

How to describe this? Ultimately, I kind of loved it, but with reservations. I felt like there were too many storylines, and some of those weren‘t fleshed out enough. It feels like she tried to pack SO MUCH into the book but left out some important parts. That being said, I LOVE her writing and I love her characters. What does it say about me that some of Vera‘s “madness” made sense? 😂🤷‍♀️

ChasingOm I‘m reading her most recent (tagged) and it‘s making me want to read her backlist. 1mo
CBee @ChasingOm I LOVED Margo ♥️♥️♥️ 1mo
Suet624 @ChasingOm After reading Margo I started reading her backlist. I think this particular book is my least favorite but like @Cbee says the way she writes her characters and their challenges is so good. 1mo

I‘m going backwards in Thorpe‘s writing and this is the third book I‘ve read of hers. While I‘ve quoted this book several times I have to say this book felt a little too ambitious. A trip to Lithuania in honor of his grandmother who escaped from a concentration camp with a teen who has experienced a psychotic break, the story covers a lot of ground and feels a bit too much. I was captivated while reading it but ultimately disappointed.

BarbaraBB I felt the same! 1mo
CBee Just finished this. I agree with what you said - I definitely liked the book and I love her writing, but it was a LOT. Maybe I wasn‘t in the right headspace? I loved Margo. Which others of her books have you read? @Suet624 (edited) 1mo
Suet624 @CBee I read The Knockout Queen and I‘m now reading her debut novel The Girls From Corona Del Mar which I‘m liking a lot so far. 1mo
CBee @Suet624 just posted my review of Fang. And also, that quote from Herzog just sort of slapped me in the face. It just makes so much sense to me right now. (edited) 1mo
Suet624 @CBee ugh. I know. 1mo

The author put this quote both in her novel and in her acknowledgments. It hit me hard each time I read it. A great description of my current understanding of the world.

“No one seemed amazed that in Lithuania, in order to deal with the end of communism, local artists had made a statue of Frank Zappa.… And now Frank Zappa has become sort of a patron saint, if you will, of Uzupis, but also of Vilnius and even Lithuania as a whole.”

Who knew?

kspenmoll Whoa! 😳 (edited) 1mo

BarbaraBB I had no idea 😀 1mo
Suet624 @kspenmoll I know!

Suet624 @BarbaraBB @leftcoastzen I had no idea either. I proceeded to google the crap out of that nugget of information. Where the quote says 'in order to deal with the end of communism' they are talking about the fact that when Lithuania became independent of the Soviet Union all of the statues of Lenin were torn down and there were many empty plinths. So they decided to put Zappa on one of the empty plinths. 1mo

I absolutely enjoyed this book! I am so glad I decided to read this even after disliking the author's other book 'L.A Weather' that I read in 2024.

I found this story to be enticing right from the opening and in between the different timelines, Escandon kept my interest with both the story and the characterizations of not just Libertad but all of the characters.
