Librariana I did, Scott! 😊 We finished it a few days ago and then promptly started on The Sandman. For Paper Girls, it felt like the focus and scope was more narrow. The way they filmed it... it didn't seem like they showed the broader views that you get to see in the comic books. Then again, that could've been A LOT to wrangle in. It just felt like they could've done so much more with it, y'know? But it *was* smartly cast. Have you seen it?? 2d

vivastory @Librariana I have been on the fence about Papergirls for the very reason that you cite. It is such a mind bending story I had trouble imagining how they would capture the scope of it. The casting did look pretty solid! 2d

I identified so strongly with Alice in parts of this! Single daughter of single-parent, seeing everyone else with their ‘sorted‘ lives. And I thought the story was really interestingly-done, without veering off into cliches.

However, I seem to be learning what I‘m not-fussed on this year, and apparently time-travel is up there. Definitely me not the book. Most odd!

Still a pick, and I‘ll definitely try more by Straub.

Whenever I go to the library, and one book catches my eye - I must admit I look at a few reviews on Litsy to determine if it's one to read.

Well- 49 pages in and I can tell I am going to enjoy this read. Compared to my last read, I am thoroughly enjoying the language used and the storytelling by Emma Straub. Can't wait to see how this story develops.

I enjoyed this read, & at times it did seem like it was specifically written for me: Alice is exactly my age, there's tons of 90s nostalgia that charmed me, & I lost my father when I was 19 & it definitely affected me to the point where I feel like someone else before that happened, & a totally different person after. A sweet, tender, moving tale about keeping the ones you love close to you, as well as being a love letter to NYC & the late 90s.

One of my favorite things about Alice and Sam‘s friendship is that Sam immediately believes that Alice is time traveling. It is wonderful when you have a friend that is so supportive in real life! Bookwormjillk I loved this too. Any other book I‘ve read about time travel involved major hurdles to prove the time travel happened, but Sam just accepted it. 3w

Soubhiville I loved this too. I think the trust between the two of them was important to the theme, in that true friends will be there, no matter how weird the situation, no matter physical distance, no matter how long since you talked. I wish everyone had a friend or two like that. (I‘m lucky that I do.) 3w

TrishB I think we all need a friend like this- I probably have 2! It‘s a matter of trust and was done really well in this story. 3w

Megabooks @Bookwormjillk agreed! I think it helped the flow of the story that Straub didn‘t spend a lot of time making Sam (and Leonard too) believe she had time traveled. I think it made me as a reader invest more of my heart in the book, too. 3w

Leniverse Yes, it was great how Sam just went with it. And the surprise when the father was just delighted and knew all about it. I was a bit sad that on the final reboot Alice didn't tell either of them. Leo still knew though. I felt uncomfortable that the final timeline had deleted Sam's oldest child, and substituted a later pregnancy. It wasn't Alice's doing, but she still committed them to a reality where Sam's family life was different. 3w

Megabooks @Soubhiville yes! I liked that they stuck together despite having different lives in the present, too. (Kids/no kids, NJ/NY, etc.) 3w

jlhammar Yeah, Sam's ability to just accept and roll with the time travel revelation was pretty great. I think it must have changed their relationship for the better to share something like that and to know at age 16 that they'd still be close friends at 40. Also fun how Sam played an important role in planting the seed for Leonard to write Dawn of Time. And I loved her reaction to finding out she'd move to New Jersey in the future. 3w

squirrelbrain @Bookwormjillk @Megabooks - I agree that the author was very clever to make the story not about the ‘technicalities‘ of time travel. It gave it much more heart and we could invest in the relationships instead. (Although I did learn about the mysteries of time travel too from the comic-con explanations) 3w

BarbaraBB @jlhammar The way Sam accepted it and went along with it did add to the story while it could easily have ruined it. I was really impressed by it! 3w

BkClubCare This is one of my favorite elements of the story and best exemplified by Sam‘s reaction and trust of her friend. That Straub didn‘t belabor any of the things that could have lead to flimsy contradictions- the reader trusts and stays with the story rather than succumb to doubts about time travel. 3w

Liz_M I agree with those that admired how Sam went with it -- I understood it as (depending on which version of the universe they were in) that whether or not Sam believed the time travel, she believed that _Alice_ believed in it and therefore supported her. 3w

Ruthiella Agree with all above. The secret doesn‘t affect their relationship-they are still there for each other regardless of timelines or weird confessions. I‘m also lucky enough to have had two such friends that I made in high school and with whom I am still friends, 40 years later. 3w

batsy I love this bit and I loved Sam's character, as well. Like @Soubhiville says the trust element was crucial and I found it a lovely depiction of a friendship where you know you can always count on that friend to be present, whether physically or just in terms of paying attention. 3w

merelybookish I just listened to a podcast with trans activist/thinker ALOK who described friendship as the answer to most existential questions. I loved that and I think the friendship between Sam and Alice shows how committed a friendship can be. On another note, like @squirrelbrain I appreciated how the time travel was not made technical, but we still learned some theories about it. 3w

squirrelbrain So true @liz_m - Sam supported Alice, whether she supported her beliefs or not. 2w

Megabooks @jlhammar I liked that repeated bit where they made sure he wrote the second series, and I liked that he offered to send Sam‘s kids to college on the money he made from it. 2w

Hooked_on_books I agree with everyone that the unquestioned support in their friendship is just lovely. Plus, it leads to one of the best lines, when Alice is explaining the time travel and Sam suggests she‘s old. She says, “I‘m not old, I‘m 40!” (Or something.) And Sam‘s reply, “I respect your right to believe those are two different things.” Oh, I howled with laughter! 2w

Chelsea.Poole Late to this party but echoing everyone‘s love for this friendship. It‘s been my experience that friends made as a teen can be hugely impactful. Those shared experiences during formative years can bind people for life. I‘m lucky to have 3 close friends to go through life stages with. Same seems to be true for Sam and Alice. Seemed like a real friendship. 2w

Bookwormjillk I loved that this book focused on the father/ daughter relationship. I thought it would be just another summer read when I started but the relationships in this one made it different. 3w

Soubhiville I think she did the best she could in the circumstances. I‘m not sure that I would have tried to change so many things, I don‘t think I‘d have had the mental energy to keep going back so many times! But if I had the chance to get some extra time with my grandmother who we lost to cancer, I would try to get her to go to the Dr sooner. If that didn‘t work I would just spend as much extra time with her doing the things we loved- garden, birdwatching, 3w

Liz_M Echoing @Soubhiville she did the best she could. Since she only had a day and pushing for big changes both had unexpected results and didn't change her dad's ultimate fate, she made the smaller nudges that improved her dad's adult life, but most importantly just enjoyed being in the moment with him. I loved the version where she plops down a tape recorder and demands Leonard tell her everything, give a family history. 😂 3w

I think Alice managed to do all of these things. I loved her thought on p. 293 “Why was it so hard to see that, how close generations were? BarbaraBB I loved this storyline and I think she did so well. Even without the time traveling she had such a deep bond with her father and they interacted so respectful with one another. I envy her for the way she could say goodbye to him and grief him ❤️❤️ 3w

Cathythoughts I think she used her extra time with her Dad well. For my own father , I don‘t think I would have done much differently… maybe I could have cut him some slack ! But that‘s an old head on young shoulders kind of talk. Still, hindsight is interesting. ♥️💔 I suppose our relationships with our mother and father are our first ones and are so loaded , it‘s hard to untangle them. 3w

Ruthiella If I could go back in time, it‘d be my grandparents I‘d want to talk to. They all grew up on farms and that way of life/economy started to disappear in the mid to late 20th century in the US. I wish I‘d paid more attention when they spoke of their childhoods… (edited) 3w

batsy I think a big part of this book was learning about what she could control and what she couldn't. In the end, she couldn't quite save him in the way she initially set out to do, but she got to know him better, and that feels like a gift ❤️ 3w

merelybookish "Old head on young shoulders kind of talk" Well put @Cathythoughts As someone who just moved home in part to be with aging parents, this book was a good reminder that time together is finite. Sometimes it's easy to get bogged down with hearing the same story for the 4th time or feeling irritated by unsolicited advice. ? 2w

Megabooks @Ruthiella yes! My grandparents grew up in eastern Kentucky coal country, so very different than me. I do know that my grandmother‘s belongings came to her house in the 1920s in a conastoga wagon because the road wouldn‘t accommodate cars. But I wish I knew more! 2w

I often ask, when I start to get frustrated, if this is my last week with them, would how I feel about X (or my reaction to it). I have moments I get exasperated, but I try to let things go. 2w

Hooked_on_books I‘m so glad she focused on familial love in this book rather than romantic love. With her first effort to change things, Alice changes her romantic life, then realizes that‘s not what actually matters to her. It had so much more depth this way. 2w

Soubhiville I think it was more comedy, but that doesn‘t feel accurate given that today‘s genres have branched so far from comedy/tragedy. I think at its heart this is a love story. Not romantic love, but love of family and friends. 3w

Liz_M It is a lovely story. Tinged with melancholy but mostly good. I appreciated the detailed setup up and, even more, that the author wisely skipped repeating the details of multiple time travel trips. I can't remember the ending right now. 🤷 3w

Leniverse I think it started as a tragedy, but it didn't stay one in the traditional sense where the audience get catharsis through vicarious suffering. Instead we got to experience Alice come to term with loss and create more meaningful relationships and the possibility of a better future. There were certainly comedy elements too, in how she would wake up to lives she hadn't intended and had to do it again. 3w

jlhammar Both comic and tragic, reflective of life. Agree with @Megabooks about the hopeful element. Not sure if there is a name/term for it, but reminded me of the journeys the MC's took in The Midnight Library, A Christmas Carol and It's A Wonderful Life in some ways. Coming to terms with mortality, embracing who you are, who you can be, the life and relationships you have. I like that it ends with Alice ready to move forward with hope for the future. 3w

jlhammar I particularly loved this bit from p. 263 because it really captures what great fiction can be and why I love it so much. “Alice...[understood] that fiction was a myth. Fictional stories, that is...the good ones--those were always true. Not the facts, not the rights and lefts, not the plots, which could take place in outer space or in hell or anywhere in between, but the feelings. The feelings were the truth.“ I felt the truth in this novel. 3w

batsy I like the description above of it being a love story about family and friends, but also about a place (NYC) and an era (the 90s). Alice is the same age as me and I was charmed by the nostalgia for 90s teenage life, although we both grew up in vastly different places! 3w

Ruthiella Thanks for the leadership counselor Meg! 🤩 It‘s been awesome. I agree with all the above that it‘s a lovely story between parent and child. So neither comedy nor tragedy. I will say that I felt Alice was fairly harsh in her attitude toward her mother, who wasn‘t an ideal parent but she knew that and did the best she could by absenting herself. 3w

merelybookish Like @jlhammar I think there is both comedy and tragedy to this story and all our stories. It's both/and. (As opposed to Either/Or 🙃) it's not so much what happens but how we perceive it. Ultimately, I would say this is a book about grief which is NOT what I expected at all when I started it. Addison_Reads I went into this thinking it would be more of romantic love story, which isn't really my thing. However, I was so pleasantly surprised by it. I'm a big fan of recent books exploring love and relationships between friends and family, and showing the reader the good and the bad that comes from loving anyone. Like others I felt okay with the ending. I'm not sure another ending would have been right for this type of story. 2w

Hooked_on_books I agree that there are elements of both but that this isn‘t really either. I liked where the story ended up, but found it overly sentimental at the end, which she avoided in the rest of the book. I also wanted to mention that my favorite moment was when she first traveled back and realized how amazing her young body was and how harshly she‘d judged herself at the time. That felt so true and has really stuck with me. 2w

I read it during a 24-hour stretch that was particularly challenging for me emotionally, and it helped bring some perspective to my real-life situation, which is one of the things I like fiction to do.

Enjoyed this one much more than her last, ‘All Adults Here‘ - even the time travel bits, that I didn‘t think would do much for me, all worked. A good summer read.

Leniverse Not really, but maybe? At 16 I was mostly just waiting to turn 18 and hoping that the current grownups wouldn't destroy the planet to the point where I wouldn't have a future. At 18 I had managed to outgrow my gloomy teen attitude enough to actually plan for a future, but at 16 everything was pretty grim. 4w

Leniverse As for things I wish I had known... I wish I had been less self-conscious and more confident in my body. Youth really is wasted on the young. But I bet that when I am 80 I'll be annoyed at myself for complaining about my aging forty-ish body. 😆 4w

merelybookish I would say yes. I had my clear goals: go to university, get out of my hometown but little sense of what kind of future I might want beyond 'a good life' and 'to be successful.' 4w

TrishB I wanted to be an MP in my teens! My 20s were crap and I just didn‘t bother with anything! I wish I‘d have stayed on focus - I could have been running the country 😁😁 4w

Cathythoughts I felt very lost and often lonely at around 16… but I think back then I also remember being a lot more courageous and energy levels were high.. I wasn‘t very focused. College was on the horizon, and marriage was a big part of the future … drummed into us then. (edited) 4w

MicheleinPhilly I had no clue what I was doing at 16 (sometimes I still don‘t ☺️). I just wanted to grow up and move out and be the boss of me! How naive I was. I would tell my 16 year old self though to stop wasting time worrying what others think of you. 4w

Megabooks @Leniverse yes re: body image. I was a size 2 and felt like I was so fat that I skipped my senior class pool party because I didn‘t want to be seen in a bikini! Plus for me, my body has never been as fit and limber as it was then. And 💯 agree with you and @BarbaraBB that youth is wasted on the young. And I obviously judged myself a lot as well. 4w

Megabooks @merelybookish that‘s another common theme in literature looking back at teen years: wanting to escape one‘s hometown. It was certainly true for me. 4w

Megabooks @MicheleinPhilly I think that self consciousness and worry about what others think is quite common for teens. It‘s much harder to brush off then! 4w

ImperfectCJ As a teen, my family situation was such that I didn't have a strong sense of the future, ambiguous or otherwise. I felt stuck and lost and self-conscious and didn't start to have any fun with it until I recognized my power as a body and embraced a bit of nihilism in college. Then I was insufferable until I had my first child when I realized quickly and painfully that I knew nothing. I've just continued learning that lesson ever since. 4w

MicheleinPhilly @TrishB @Megabooks When I was 16, I thought I would become a lawyer. So much so that when I started college, I declared as pre-law. I do work with and for lawyers, but I fucking hate them and no amount of money could entice me to become one. 😂 4w

jlhammar Oh my gosh, yes, definitely rang true for me. And a big yes to what you all have been saying so far. I had so much anxiety and felt so much stress about the future when I was 16. Did I actually enjoy anything? I felt like I had to be perfect or I was doomed (these were my own expectations and fears, did not come from my parents who are much more laid back than I am). Also, so much time and energy given to what I looked like. What a waste! 4w

jlhammar As much as I think it was stupid that I spent so much time and energy on how I looked and boys/love life, I think the dumb teenager I was led me to here and to wherever I'm going so I wouldn't try to change anything. I have learned so much through each phase of life so far and am hopefully getting better and wiser thanks to mistakes made along the way. 4w

TheKidUpstairs I was terrified of the future when I was a teenager. I spent so much time thinking about how I'd never be ready for adult life. Along with worrying about what everyone thought of me. If I could go back, I'd enjoy the time more. 4w

I really wanted to get out of my small hometown, but I don‘t think I knew exactly to what. I‘d tell my younger self to figure out the real answer to that question! Chelsea.Poole Wow, I love reading about everyone as a teen. 💕You all have made me realize how naive, immature, and oblivious I was to the wider world at 16. I was dumb, but happy in my small life. 😆 I was head over heels for a boy and we were insanely serious about marriage as soon as we graduated HS. Thank heavens fate led me in other directions but I‘m still fond of what we had, though as an adult I see the issues. My focus was on my relationship. 4w

Fun and thought-provoking - looking back, I now see everything I did as a late teen as tiptoeing toward finding myself via the escape route of education - once I found a college that was away from home but not TOO far away (“home” being my hometown but also my religion, culture, and probably lots of other stuff), I figured the rest would work itself out. 4w

Hooked_on_books My teenage experience was like many of yours. I remember how everything felt SO important, SO vital, in a way I have long since learned was not true. I wish I could have taken my failures with more grace instead of seeing them as catastrophes. I did end up being what I wanted to be then, but found I wasn‘t happy and changed paths. If 16 year old me knew that, she‘d be horrified! 3w

In Malaysia for example, your teen years or secondary school would be in service of ensuring you did well enough in the SPM examinations & academic rigour in national schools was brutal in my time. Everything I did felt geared towards academic excellence leading to professional & career security & financial stability. I know now that things could have been different! 3w

I ran it by Helen and Barbara beforehand to see if this was 💯 an American thing, which we decided it wasn‘t, but I knew that it would not have been the experience of every Litten around the world. My sophomore college roommate was Malaysian, and she also talked about the competitiveness. She came to Duke on a Petronas scholarship. This was back in the late 90s. Long and short lots of variation in the world!! 3w

I was quite competitive as well, but I still look back then and think I personally had the ability to be more carefree than I did as an adult. I had activities and schoolwork and summer jobs, but there was never truly the grind of massive day to day responsibilities I‘ve had as an adult. 3w

merelybookish NYC really was like a character, one that could grow and change but something at its core remains the same. So the restaurants and 'landmarks' can come and go, but something about the spirit of the city endures. I liked that. Alice absolutely loves NYC and realizes it's unnecessary to be too precious or smug about her version of NYC. 4w

Cathythoughts I‘ve never been to NYC but I enjoy reading about it. Yes the city is like a character, an exciting , interesting , growing and changing form, just as I imagine it to be. Nostalgia, yes, just like when I think of my own little city I have memories on every street, places that remain or have changed , ‘first times‘, great times , sad times. NYC is part of Alice , all her memories are there. 4w

Don‘t we all know that place that has changed so much over the years without you noticing it because you were there all the time? Alice experiences this with Leonard too, when traveling back in time. I can't count the number of times a new restaurant or store has opened in my neighborhood(s) and I can't for the life of me remember what had been there before. What I loved was tracking the number of places that have stayed the same. Pompadour Walk and Cheever Place are real and still there, as is the whale in the museum. Many of the restaurants exist, but have changed locations, etc. 4w

When I lived nearby and worked there then, it felt on the cusp of a lot of changes, as I‘m did NYC as well, with young people ditching the suburbs and changes in what people wanted in restaurants and entertainment. jlhammar You know, now that I think of it, my first visit to NYC was in Fall 1996! My high school choir was part of a group performing in the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade. It all felt kind of magical. This quote is such a perfect way to describe change. And I think it is interesting that many adults during Alice's teenage years would have been feeling nostalgia for the grittier NYC of the 70s and 80s. 4w

jlhammar Yes, I was thinking those same things @BarbaraBB ! We hardly register small changes with people and places we see all the time. I moved from my hometown for college and since only visit a few times a year. I'm always struck by how different things are. For me, it will always be the hometown of my youth. But for my parents and sister who still live there, things have changed bit by bit so they hardly notice and are amused by my surprise. 4w

ImperfectCJ I've been to NYC twice, once in the summer of 1997 and once at Christmas 2016. It was so dirty in 1997, I remember wiping my face with my t-shirt and seeing the grime on the fabric. I get the idea of layers, and I've experienced something similar in San Diego, the only place I've lived as an adult where I also lived as a child. I usually don't like books set in NYC because they tend to be self-important, but I'm not minding this one. 3w

cariashley Where do I even start - I related to this story so emphatically, it hurt. This was the truest depiction of NYC I‘ve maybe ever read - the vibrancy, the community, the bratty rich kids. I was a scholarship kid at an upper east side private school at the same time as the main character, so this was a real nostalgia trip for me. It really captures the spirit of my New York. 3w

Megabooks @ImperfectCJ cities change so much over time, and I recently moved back to my hometown and agree. And I try to seek out books not set in nyc/Brooklyn because it‘s often overdone and there‘s nothing special many of them add to the tons of books out there. This one is special though. 3w

Leniverse I'm not convinced it's her father's life that needs improving. As for time travel, that sounds fun and scary but if it involves waking up as a 16 y/o again, then hard pass. And like Leonard says, when you have kids you have to be careful what you change in your own past. 4w

merelybookish Time travel is not something that generally appeals to me, although I've seen most of the movies Alice references and read some of the books. 🤔 I did worry that she would screw things up and was relieved that the rules to her time travel were fairly lose. I understood Alice's impulse to save Leonard while also figuring it would not work out as planned. But one of the best parts of this novel was how often my assumptions were wrong. 4w

Cathythoughts She‘s time travelling back, to me it feels more like another way of remembering the past and her life with her Dad, all the times they spent together. Trying to save Leonard feels like her magical way of working through his dying , his death. (edited) 4w

BarbaraBB I agree with @Leniverse I am not sure Leonard‘s love needed improving. I think Alice wanted to make the best of her time with him, because she realized it was ending and she had taken him for granted most of the time - which is perfectly natural of course. 4w

So I understand the impulse of both trying to make a loved one's life healthier, longer, better so that we can spend more time with them. But as to actually effecting the desired changes, I have trouble believing that one person, in one day, can make a controlled difference! 4w

Chelsea.Poole I‘m often a coulda-shoulda-woulda person myself. I can see myself trying to do anything possible to change outcomes, especially with my parent. This book hit me so hard because of all of the health issues of my mom‘s we‘ve been dealing with. This is one of the best parent-grown children relationships I‘ve read. Also, I have to say, this is time travel-lite (?) otherwise I wouldn‘t have enjoyed it 😆 4w

jlhammar I also love thinking about time travel, though once I really get going it can make my brain hurt a bit! I don't think you can know what to change in your past to make life better in the future. I understand the desire to try, but I don't see it working in any scenario. There are always trade-offs or things that would be altered unintentionally. 3w

MrsV I used to think that I wanted to go back and tweak a thing or two. I thought I‘d have my kids earlier than when I had them. But then I realized I wouldn‘t have the kids I do have, and I know my life wouldn‘t be the same without them. (edited) 3w

jlhammar When I wonder about what my life might have been had I made different choices, I think of the multiverse. There's quite possibly another version of myself in a different universe doing the things I might have done had I made different decisions. The possibilities/versions are infinite. But this is my universe and I wouldn't mess with it. 3w

jlhammar I'd love to time travel. Not so much to revisit parts of my life or to try to change things, but just to witness history. My ideal time travel would be one in which I'm invisible and can't interact or change anything. My house was built in 1914 and I often think how cool it would be to be able to see what daily life was like for the family living in my home back then. Which reminds me of this amazing graphic novel

Hooked_on_books I loved how Alice‘s focus was on her dad rather than herself in trying to change things. And I especially love that she ended up married with kids on her first effort to change things and said no to it. Society so often tells women those are the goals, and I love that she rejected that because it simply didn‘t work for her. That was awesome! 3w

(I've only read up to the halfway point so I kind of closed my eyes scrolling through the last several comments, so someone might already have said this.) 3w

This book 💔. I can‘t remember having read about fathers and daughters more lovingly. Or about New York for that matter. The time traveling added more wise lessons than I could have wished for.

There is a time travel aspect to this book but really it is about a daughter‘s love for her father, the difficulty of facing losing a parent and wishing we had appreciated the time we had with them more. This hit me in the feels with both of my parents aging in ways that have totally redefined our relationships.

Guess what WASN‘T on my Weekly Forecast this morning? So guess what I‘ve started reading?!

Very much enjoying this so far, though I‘m not too sure what it is yet. I might even make next week‘s #CampLitsy conversation!

Also, trying out a new audiobook app. It‘s a small UK (Cornwall)-based indie. No subscription, just buy-as-you-go. And their unique thing is that where licences permit, you get the e- and audiobooks together (not this one, sadly).

rockpools @squirrelbrain yay! What do you think? It might not work so well if you‘re an Audible/Scribd user, but I‘ve been after a UK-focussed version of libro.fm for AGES, and this might fill that gap. It seems to have a decent range of titles. 4w

squirrelbrain It‘s funny as I though that I wouldn‘t pay Qf.99 for an audiobook, but then I already pay more than that on Audible. ? 1 credit a month was never enough for me but now it probably is, as I dog-walk and don‘t listen at the same time! I‘ll keep an eye on it and see what new books come on. 4w

I was going to have to buy This Time Tomorrow anyway, and couldn‘t find it for less than Qf.99 even as an ebook, so figured it was worth a go. Wow! I'm surprised at how much I loved this. What seemed to start out as a summer movie, rom-com, time travel romp proved to be so much more.
I've been a bad camper for the last few #camplitsy books. (Like I hid in the cabin when I was supposed to be playing softball 😅). But now I'm all caught up and excited to discuss the next two! Bring on the 90s nostalgia.
Next up, Our Wives Under the Sea. 🧜‍♀️

This book was just lovely and sad. When it got to a certain part it was just heartbreaking.

My books have had an unintentional 90s theme lately. I couldn‘t put this book down at a certain point and had to keep reading. I‘ve only read a few Emma Straub books but I‘m glad I picked this one up.

I don‘t know if I‘ve ever read a contemporary book that was sci-fi for 1 person.

Another sweet one to add to the mix of time travel books. It establishes rules quickly & makes sense without getting too bogged down. It reminds me of the movie About Time. It‘s more about the relationship w/her father than anything else. It‘s got a lot of love for NYC. A great one to listen to while packing!

When she was young, she'd thought he was old, and now that he was old, Alice realized how young he'd been. Perspective was unfair.

ETA: This was such a good read. For a while, I thought it was going the route of Family Man, and felt a bit let down, but this turned out to be so much more. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Perfect summer reading. Very much enjoyed this one. I loved the two central relationships. I just thought it was sweet, well considered, and just lovely overall. A love story that's not a romance.

Also a love letter to New York, and I really enjoyed spending time in Emma Straub's NY, past and present.

Holy ‘90s nostalgia! A time travel novel which is at its heart a love story between a parent and child. Alice was raised in NYC by a single father whose claim to fame is an incredibly popular time travel novel that was also adapted into a successful TV series. On her 40th birthday she travels back to 1996 on a pivotal night.

All the references to other time travel narratives in the book were fun. Sweet story with a good message. #CampLitsy
