I have long been fascinated by how the brain works and how it can go wrong, and this is an exploration of the latter. Initially, Alice is incredibly relatable, heading into college with all the insecurities and fears that entails. Then things start to go very wrong for her. This is a good way to gain empathy for those suffering from significant mental illness and a demonstration of how badly our health care system lets these people down. #TOB26

merelybookish Great review! I read this one and found it well-written but oh-so bleak. He describes her mental distress so well but I found it an uncomfortable read. 2h
Bookwormjillk Great review and great picture 2h
sarahbarnes Great review! I do think I want to get to this one. 15m

Gliff: A Novel | Ali Smith

This book totally hit the spot for me. It's tragic and terrifying on a global scale while at the same time fiercely personal and quiet. I love how the story unfolds and the feeling of hope that accompanies the fear and uncertainty. The way I feel reading this one reminds me of how I felt reading Smith's There But For The, which isn't really anything like this one in plot or structure. #tob26 longlist

sarahbarnes I love her and am so happy this made the TOB list. 9m

#ToB26 #16

Two men have become friends at college. Turning 50, they still are. And so are their wives and daughters. During a weekend that the two families spend together something happens that changes everything. All of them have to decide what‘s true and what isn‘t and how to go on from here.

An interesting premise but the author needs way too many words to tell the story. That makes it
an okayish read but not a ToB-worthy one.

ChaoticMissAdventures That is a bummer, this was one of the ones that the synopsis sounded super interesting. 18h
squirrelbrain Great review! I got this as an ARC, aaages ago but just never got round to reading it. Have you seen the terrible s ore it gets on GR? 18h
Bookwormjillk Ok you convinced me to put this on my not unless it makes the short list pile 18h

Hooked_on_books @ChaoticMissAdventures If you plan to read this one, you may want to look at some of the GR reviews that detail what the “something” is that happens. It‘s because of that that I won‘t read this book. 17h
ChaoticMissAdventures @Hooked_on_books oh thank you. I love Storygraph for this. I am with you. Thank you Barbara for taking one for the team. 16h
Chelsea.Poole I have this on audio but maybe I won‘t prioritize it now. Thanks! 12h
BarbaraBB @ChaoticMissAdventures @squirrelbrain @Bookwormjillk @Hooked_on_books @Chelsea.Poole I am not on GR anymore. Storygraph has an average of three stars with which I agree. The something that happens is terrible but not as exploited as you might think. It‘s the shifting dynamics afterwards that that make the book dark and interesting. It‘s not bad, really, it might even be worth reading. It is just not good enough to be a TOB book. 8h
sarahbarnes Glad to know your thoughts on this one. I‘ll probably skip it for now. 17m

As can often be the case with short story collections, this one was uneven for me. The stories that leaned a bit into horror worked the best, but I found too many of the stories pretty forgettable. #TOB26

Bookwormjillk I was unsure about this one because it‘s short stories. I put it on my mental read if it makes the short list pile. 1d
merelybookish When I made a list of the books on the long list I wanted to read, this was not on it. 🤷 1d

Evie arrives to do her SAT tutoring session with a wealthy teen and finds the parents brutally murdered and a woman tied up in a closet. Then their daughter and her boyfriend arrive, prompting Evie and the woman to run, now as the #1 suspects. A bit thrillery but more than that, as the women get to know each other. I found this riveting and didn‘t want to stop listening. #TOB26

squirrelbrain Fab! I borrowed this from the library (along with many others!) - just need to find the time to read it now! 1d
Hooked_on_books @squirrelbrain I think “just need to find the time to read it” is or should be the motto of Litsy! 😂 1d

#ToB26 long listed, but this was already on my radar. As someone who loves those stories about reclusive people living off grid I was hoping for much more of that, since our MC is doing just that—he removed himself from the world at-large after a family fight over politics on Thanksgiving 2016. The novel really takes off when his grandchildren show up at his door. A look at America in the age of MAGA and the creepy Christians-with-guns movement.

sarahbarnes You may have sold me on this one. 1d
BarbaraBB Great review. I have a copy of this one too. Looking forward to it. 1d

squirrelbrain I have this one too, on audio, along with many other audiobooks from the #ToB - goodness knows when I‘ll get to them all! 😜 1d
Bookwormjillk I‘ve been meaning to read this since it came out. Hopefully soon! 1d

This is told as a fairytale, a retelling (apparently) of Bluebeard which I was unfamiliar with prior. I loved the way this played with the fairytale genre and ways we tell stories to circumvent reality, often even to ourselves. But ultimately, the narrator tells us: “The people are us, the time is always.” Side: didn‘t I just read this somewhere on Litsy? Such a perfect line. I‘m not sure I grasped all this was doing but I had fun trying. #ToB26

merelybookish I liked this as well. And I also was never quite sure I got everything that was happening. 😅 2d
ChaoticMissAdventures There are so many on this list I somehow missed this one totally! 1d
sarahbarnes Great review! I just picked this one up from the library today - I‘m looking forward to it! 1d

BarbaraBB I missed this one too but it sounds good! 1d
Hooked_on_books Interesting! I don‘t usually tend to like fairytale retellings, so I‘m very curious to see where I land on this one. 1d
squirrelbrain Great review! I‘d question-marked this one as it didn‘t sound like my thing -probably one I‘ll only read if it makes the shortlist. 1d
Bookwormjillk I missed this one too! 1d
Chelsea.Poole @merelybookish that makes me feel better! I need to visit the Bluebeard tale. 1d
Chelsea.Poole @ChaoticMissAdventures @BarbaraBB @Bookwormjillk so many on the list, it‘s easy to overlook some! 1d
Chelsea.Poole @sarahbarnes @Hooked_on_books I‘ll look for your reviews—I think this is one that would lead to interesting discussions. 1d
Chelsea.Poole @squirrelbrain honestly, this one isn‘t my type either but I was struck by the cover and title (and it‘s easy availability on audio at the library lol). I must say, I was pleasantly surprised! 1d

December #bookspin and #castthedie list. I might trade out one of these to put in Lion by Sonia Walger, but aside from that, this should pretty much be my list. Lots of #ToB26 longlist and my ever-aspirational #Roll100 titles.
