Mehso-so

Some young boys on a soccer team in Thailand were stranded in a cave in 2018 while exploring with their coach. The country and people from across the world came together to save them. Obviously, the rescue was incredible and it‘s a wonderful true story, but the book is written in a way that made it drag even though it was short.

Texreader What a shame! I watched this story unfold with such dread and so happy they were rescued 3w
AvidReader25 @Texreader It‘s not a bad book! Just maybe for a YA audience and not well paced. 3w

One of my favorite Zapata books. The only one I like better is The Wall of Winnipeg and Me. Great plot and characters. Fabulous prose and that slow burn to die for me. I wish every book I read gave all the feels like this. 5⭐️ all year long!

The Discworld reinvents football (soccer, for Americans) and several seemingly ordinary Below Stairs characters at Unseen University come into their own particular kinds of power. Sweet, humane, a little romantic, and sadly still timely in its depiction of Othering.

THIS is the Pratchett I‘ve been waiting for thus far in the Rincewind books! (It helped that Rincewind basically only shows up here in cameos 😆) The jokey bits are woven into a much more focused plot, with actual character development and a compelling underlying message of common humanity (whether or not the characters are human!). I adored Nutt, and the football was hilarious. Do we get more Nutt in later books? I need more Nutt! #OokBookClub

BookmarkTavern Totally agree! 💖 2mo
willaful Yes, the less Rincewind the better. 😂 I never realized my mom was quoting this when she yells “change and decay!“ 2mo

I loved this installment of the #Discworld series, which has the wizards discovering the game of football. This one introduces wonderful characters Glenda, Nutt, Juliet and Trevor but it also features a number of Discworld favourites.

julesG @willaful @BarbaraJean no problems, I'm not finished with the book either 2mo
willaful Well, that was fun, and I always love the bits of goofy romance Pratchett pops in. I hadn't read this one before but it's one of my mom's favs -- probably because it's very light on Rincewind. 😂 I think it may have helped that I read it after seeing “Ted Lasso,“ and got more of the jokes around football/soccer. Pepe was a bit of a surprise! 2mo

TheSpineView Got to say how much I enjoyed this one. His is genius with this satirical view of Hollywood. And Gaspode The Wonder Dog!!!!! 😂😂😂 2mo
BookmarkTavern I‘m so glad to have revisited this one! I was so focused on getting irritated with the wizards last time, I didn‘t fully appreciate Nutt. That feeling of having to work for worth, I deeply empathized with that. And listening to Glenda say “you always have” made me tear up. I do wish we could have gotten another Nutt novel. 2mo

julesG I completely forgot to read this book. I've started yesterday. Will chime in properly later. But just wanted to say that I'm still in awe at Pratchett's way with words. When I first read his books the satire wasn't as obvious to my teenage self as it is today. 2mo
julesG @BookmarkTavern I agree with getting irritated with the wizard's. 2mo
julesG ? No, autocorrect, I wanted the word to be "wizards" plural. ??? 2mo
kwmg40 @TheSpineView Was this comment meant for the next book? I\'m reading it now and I too love Gaspode! 2mo
kwmg40 @BookmarkTavern Yes, Nutt was such a terrific character! 2mo
kwmg40 @julesG Oh, autocorrect does stuff like this to me all the time. So annoying. 2mo
kwmg40 I loved this installment of the Discworld series! First of all, it was nice to finally get in the Rincewind series, some really good female characters. I especially liked the interactions among the group of Glenda, Nutt, Juliet and Trevor. I also liked Pratchett\'s hilarious takes on football, academia and the Romeo and Juliet story. 2mo
kwmg40 At first, I thought that Pratchett was being ridiculous with the Megapode Hunt. Then I found out it\'s based on a real-life tradition: the Mallard Hunt at All Souls College in Oxford! My daughter did her Master\'s degree at Oxford and she confirms that totally inane traditions are quite common there. 2mo
BarbaraJean I loved this one. Nutt especially. @BookmarkTavern I was disappointed to search around and discover this is all we get of Nutt's story. I would have LOVED another Nutt book, or at least another appearance! @kwmg40 YES to finally getting some really good female characters. Glenda was fantastic. I feel like this is the first time in the Rincewind books where we get some actual character development--and it's all in that character group. 2mo
BookmarkTavern @kwmg40 Is it really? That‘s hilarious! 😂😂😂 2mo

Can you describe this book as a Romeo & Juliet football AU where one of the teams is wizards? Yes. Can you also describe this book as a condemnation of when community becomes mob mentality, & how difficult it is to break away from what people expect of you? Also yes.

So glad to revisit this one! I forgot just how much I loved Glenda, Juliet, Trevor, & all the other people we meet. & Nutt, poor Nutt, who just wants to have some worth.🌕🌕🌕🌕🌑
