(Ch 1) He was the very last sort of man to be murdered.

He was the very last sort of man to become an amateur sleuth.

Looking from the great dark bulk of the library looming in front of him to the green slope leading from the Terrace to the wide expanse of the lawn, he would often murmur to himself the words of the great Roman advocate Cicero: ‘If you have a garden and a library, you have everything you need.‘

humouress (Ch 2) ‘But he has bare feet.‘ ‘Even the Lord Chief Justice has feet, officer,‘ said Gabriel. ‘And in this instance,‘ he added with the characteristic little snuffle that indicated a witticism, ‘they were feet of clay.‘ ‘Clay?‘ said the struggling policeman. 1w
humouress (Ch 9) Now off-duty, it was time for Constable Wright‘s nightly beer, but he gingerly held out his large pink hand to take the exquisite stem of the eighteenth-century sherry glass proffered to him. Sipping the pale liquid, he tried to hide a slight grimace. 1w
humouress ‘I do hope it is not too dry for you?‘ ‘No, sir, thank you,‘ said Constable Wright, whose mother had brought him up to be polite. ‘It is really quite wet.‘ 1w
humouress Gabriel looked at him rather sharply; Constable Wright looked back. And suddenly Gabriel chuckled. He did not often chuckle, but when he did, it was immensely charming. Without knowing why, Wright beamed, and they sat for a few seconds in a silence that was of a different, almost companionable, nature. 1w

#historicalfiction The crimes that take place in this novel are truly horrific resulting in the loss of hundreds of lives. The story is well written and the majority of the investigation is quite gripping. While the book travels along at a reasonable pace and in parts is very exciting there are interludes particularly where family is concerned that the narrative just drags. It is a very good read but I would have preferred a condensed version.

What an amazing coincidence: A parcel of books that was scanned at my local postal sorting office two days ago has not been delivered. I am going to the sorting office tomorrow morning to ask them to search for it. Frustrated I decided to read a bit more of my book which is set in London and yet The Prince of Wales in Abercarn jumped off of the page at me. The sorting office I'm going to tomorrow is on the Prince of Wales estate, Abercarn. S.Wales

I wanted to read a book set in Singapore, and this was one of the books suggested by the library. I went in without reading any reviews, or looking it up on Litsy and I‘m pleasantly surprised by how much I‘m enjoying it. 🇸🇬

Setting: 1910 - Singapore
Genre: Murder mystery

Ruthiella It‘s nice to read a book that way! It‘s rare now but I like it when it happens. 2w
BiblioLitten @Ruthiella You‘re right! Most of my reads are Litten recommended. 2w
GatheringBooks I lived in Singapore for 11 years - i would strongly recommend 2w
BiblioLitten @GatheringBooks Thank you for the recommendation. I have placed the graphic novel on hold. 😊 2w

After moving home, reading some dreary books and lack of sleep all of which induced a reading block I am finally back into the swing of things. This has prompted me to order 'A Case iof Life and Limb' #historicalmystery

humouress Ch 25: ‘Are you patronising me, Sir Gabriel?‘ was the sharp reply.
‘No,‘ he said in his considered way, ‘and I should be sorry if you thought I was. I merely sought a fresh mind, and yours was available.‘

Ch 28: Gabriel hesitated. His week of enforced detecting was over. He had complied with Sir William‘s demands. He was released from the investigation he had so reluctantly undertaken, and surely also from the threat to his home. ⬇️

humouress ⬆️ He was outside the boundaries of the Temple, and the suspect was not a member of that august body but just another Fleet Street vagrant. He was surprised to find the suggestion of continuing involvement in the mystery utterly irresistible. 3w

This was so good! Historical mystery set in Victorian England with a serial killer, an inspector with a troubling past, and a female doctor. Well written and captivating.

Trigger warnings for graphic murder scenes, child abuse and violence, and violence toward women

Bette I thought it was good too, it was so well done for a debut novel. 👍😊 4w

Well…this seems spot on for today‘s climate…

“‘One accusation is off the mark. Foreigners aren‘t the ‘criminal contagion‘ so many claim. As a policeman, I can attest to that. It takes a lot to leave your home. To start life over in a new place requires courage. It takes energy and ambition.‘”

This book takes place in 1866. The MCs fight against a prejudicial society in the UK. Very timely indeed.

Librarybelle @Chrissyreadit This book makes me think of Rosemary Simpson‘s books. If you have not tried this one yet, I‘d recommend it! 1mo

I‘m clearly in a mood because this was a rare miss for me in a series that is usually impeccable. Set in Paris as Napoleon escapes Elba, it brings closure to an ongoing storyline, while having fun with some historical figures like Vidocq. The issue I have here is that there‘s a lot of angst (understandable if you‘ve read the previous books),and Harris harps on it so much that it becomes repetitive & irritating. A low pick as it‘s still a St Cyr.
