What the Devil Knows
What the Devil Knows | C.S. Harris

Sebastian St. Cyr thought a notorious serial killer had been brought to justice until a shocking series of gruesome new murders stuns the city in this thrilling historical mystery from the USA Today bestselling author of Who Speaks for the Damned. It's October 1814. The war with France is finally over and Europe's diplomats are convening in Vienna for a conference that will put their world back together. With peace finally at hand, London suddenly finds itself in the grip of a series of heinous murders eerily similar to the Ratcliffe Highway murders of three years before. In 1811, two entire families were viciously murdered in their homes. A suspect--a young seaman named John Williams--was arrested. But before he could be brought to trial, Williams hanged himself in his cell. The murders ceased, and London slowly began to breathe easier. But when the lead investigator, Sir Edwin Pym, is killed in the same brutal way three years later and others possibly connected to the original case meet violent ends, the city is paralyzed with terror once more. Was the wrong man arrested for the murders? Bow Street magistrate Sir Henry Lovejoy turns to his friend Sebastian St. Cyr, Viscount Devlin, for assistance. Pym's colleagues are convinced his manner of death is a coincidence, but Sebastian has his doubts. The more he looks into the three-year-old murders, the more certain he becomes that the hapless John Williams was not the real killer. Which begs the question--who was and why are they dead set on killing again?

Gosh, I really love this series. With my whole entire heart. Sebastian and Hero are my favorite literary couple! The mystery was well plotted and the ending was kind of a shock! Was also a gold mine for word search words 😂. 15 points for team genre, 3130 word search points for a total of 3145 points for #TeamSlaughter. #scarathlon2022

My favorite subgenre of fiction is the historical mystery category and I can count on one hand the series which consistently deliver every time. The Sebastian St Cyr series by C S Harris definitely qualifies. This 16th in the series is a ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ read. If you look at each entry on Goodreads they all consistently rank a well deserved 4 stars and above. Basically I‘m in love with Sebastian. Read them and you will understand why!!!🤓

Amie My favorite genre, too! I've been wanting to start this series for awhile, but haven't gotten around to it yet. 3y

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️Even detectives can‘t run away...Anna, a San Fran detective is running away, or getting away... to the only place she feels roots, Northern Cali, where she resided with her loving foster parents. But if she thought she‘d clear her head she‘s mistaken because girls are missing and as my middle school students would say, things are looking “sus.” Anna dives in and joins up with local police to nab the culprit... full review scrappymags.com

I look forward every year to a new Sebastian St. Cyr historical mystery, and this one‘s number 16. 😊 I could read Harris 24/7 and be happy. I missed a few of the regulars in this one, but the mysteries were top-notch centering around similar murders 3 years apart. Corruption, greed, power and revenge are rampant in the brewery/publican relations in London. A lot of this is based around fact, and Harris‘ research is always meticulous. Loved! 5/5⭐️

Bookzombie Another series I want to start, but would like to finish/catch-up on some others first. Famous last words. 😂 4y

EadieB It was interesting to find out that the circumstances of these murders were a true story. The author is also coming close to giving us more information about Sebastian's mother. As always, C.S. Harris does excellent research and we learn a bit more about British history. Thanks to NetGalley and Berkley Publishing Group for a free copy for an honest review. 4y
Freespirit He writes great books. I haven‘t read this 4y

EadieB @Freespirit Hard to tell when they use initials as their first name. 4y
rwmg @Freespirit @EadieB Unless I know otherwise I tend to assume an author with initials rather than a first name is a woman writing in a more traditionally male genre 4y
MamaGina One of my favorite all time series! Definitely recommend reading in order🤓 4y
