This one is about 1/3 fiction (the folk tales) and 2/3 nonfiction… so I‘m running with it as nonfiction.

This book also introduced me to the concept of the baby Buddha, and it‘s just beyond adorable. It‘s an internet rabbit hole of adorableness!

This was so wonderful to listen to. It was like an extended YouTube video. His YouTube videos are the best. I can‘t wait for the other two books in his trilogy to be turned into audiobooks. They are absolutely brilliant when he‘s telling the stories, plus I know I‘m getting the right pronunciations then. 100% recommend. If you haven‘t seen his videos on YouTube yet, go look for Kyota Ko on YouTube. You won‘t regret it.

JenlovesJT47 Was going to get a physical copy but do you think it‘s better on audio? 2w
GingerAntics @JenlovesJT47 I liked it in audio because I don‘t know Japanese and I wanted the right pronunciations. It‘s really up to you. I have the ebook version of this as well, so I may reread it that way. It‘s really your preference. If you watch his social media videos, you‘ll probably really enjoy the audiobook, if that helps. 2w
JenlovesJT47 Thank you! 🤗 2w

This is about the recovery period of Yozu's life after a suicide attempt. He is kept in a sanitarium along the coast while he is healing. During this book, Dazai continously breaks up the story by including chunks of his own dialogue that don't necessarily add to the story, but they make for an interesting read. I haven't ever read anything like this but could definitely read more like this.

@Prairiegirl_reading This isn't the whole lot, but I have something of a collection of Japanese and Korean cosy healing fiction... my plan is to read the lot and make a video about which are best... it may take a while though hehe

Japan 1903:Ichi,daughter of an ama&a fisherman from Iojima, is sold into prostitution. In the Shinonome brothel she is trained in the art of pleasing customers but also attends school where Tetsuko,a failed prostitute from the family of a samurai, teaches “writing to women trapped in the prison of bestial desire” and finally to read and understand their account books since the women are often charged too much for food or clothes&deliberately kept

Anna40 Dependent on their owners. The novel is based on a real historic event when prostitutes went on Labor strike inspired by a shipyard strike in the UK. I loved the beautiful language, the rich depiction of place, the women& their struggles. “ ‘Because prostitutes are not human‘, they said. ‘Not human?‘ ‘Lower than humans.‘ Shinonome bit her lip and listened in silence as Tetsuko‘s voice continued like the steady dripping of rain. ‘The law (Livestoc (edited) 3mo
Anna40 Emancipation law) stated that prostitutes have lost their human rights and therefore are the same as livestock. (…)‘ “ 3mo

I love when my husband returns from Japan with a new Kokeshi for my shelves! He travels there for work, and maybe one day I‘ll get to go with him. For now, our boys‘ school and sports keep me in Tennessee. 😩🫠😂 It‘s fine. But I‘m going eventually.

Texreader How awesome are those!! 3mo
BarbaraBB Awesome. I buy them too when in Japan but only have three so far so I envy you and especially your husband 😀 3mo
