Interesting story of a family in Kabul. I was especially intrigued by the different layers of the family. It was interesting to see a more personal look into daily life in Afghanistan. The book came out in 2002 so it is fairly old now, but I doubt life has changed a whole lot there.

I've read many books focusing and educating us (quite rightly) on the traumas, restrictions and hostilities towards females under the Taliban rule. But what if you are an educated man that wants to hear his wife's laughter? Would love to walk beside her on the streets? Wants to see her face under the glow of the sun?

Here we see two marriages trying to hold onto humanity in a place where pleasure is a sin.

This book packs a punch.

#12BOOKSOF2022 This one really stuck with me a picture book I read for #foodandlit

MAY

Author Bahram Rahman grew up in Afghanistan during years of civil war and the restrictive Taliban regime of 1996-2001. He wrote The Library Bus to tell new generations about the struggles of women who, like his own sister, were forbidden to learn.

Books saved me as a child. To not be allowed to read and learn is a fate worse than death.

Andrew65 Frightening that we are back here again with Afghanistan. (edited) 1y
TheBookHippie @Andrew65 So incredibly heartbroken for all girls and women! 1y

This is a very sad book, but it‘s so well written that it was hard to put it down. It‘s really hard to read about how women are treated in the family, and more generally, but it is very well written.
It follows the family of a man who managed to keep a book store open in Kabul for years and who had big dreams for Afghanistan once the Americans came.
3/5 stars, read for a well written, enraging, and poignant story of a family in Afghanistan.

iread2much @Sleepswithbooks thank you! Happy holidays to you as well 😊 1y

I loved the book and I also liked the graphic novel very much. Thank you @Sharv_Sona for the recommendation.

“For you, a thousand times over” is probably one of my favourite (and most moving) literary quotes.

This was lovely and heartbreaking all at once - both because of the contents of the book but also because we‘re seeing the same conflict playing out again today.

Book 1/4 for #OutstandingOctober

I am in tears. I reread the book a few days ago, and yet the graphic novel hits harder. It very emotional for me to see one of my favourite books come to life in such a unique way. This is why I love graphic novels. It isn‘t nearly as long as the book, but the impact which it had over me was through the roof. @Reyzl if you haven‘t already read this, please do.

Reyzl Thank you, @Sharv_Sona! I will borrow it when I finish the book that I‘m reading now 🙂 2y
