"This year's Elmet"??

I've now read 5/13 of the #manbooker18 longlist so have decided to rank them. So far.....

There is a big gap between the top three and the bottom two but all are worth a read!!

1. Everything Under
2. The Mars Room
3. The Water Cure
4. Snap
5. Washington Black

Kalalalatja This years Elmet is a pretty good description for this 👍 6y

I still have very contradictory feelings about #ManBooker2018 longlist ... and after reading all of them - here it is my personal shortlist. Thematically and stylistic very different stories, but with the common point in/about our messed up world.

#MBP2018

Kalalalatja I haven‘t read any of these yet, though I‘m almost a 100 pages into Milkman, and I‘m struggling! 6y
Simona Sorry @Kalalalatja but I can‘t assure you that the story will be at some point very different than those first 100 pages 😔 6y
merelybookish Wow! It's impressive you read all of them! Are you rooting for one to win? 6y

Redwritinghood I still have a few of these to read, but like a lot of your choices! 6y
BarbaraBB So impressies you‘ve read them all. I share some of your favorites but I am having a hard time at the moment getting into 6y
Emilymdxn Haven‘t read long take or normal people yet but I‘m agreed that Overstory and Milkman are my absolute standouts so far!! 6y
batsy Wow, well done 😘 Maybe I should just stick to the Simona shortlist considering I've read all of one book so far 😂 I'm curious too, any particular book(s) in particular you want to win? 6y
Simona @merelybookish @batsy Thanks 😊 The Overstory is my winner and the closest to the MB motto - ‘finest in literature‘. 6y
Simona @Redwritinghood Thank you ☺️ At the beginning I was really skeptical about longlist, but at the end I found some interesting stories. 6y
Simona @BarbaraBB The story and the prose is quite dense, but it‘s a rewarding book ... 6y
Simona @Emilymdxn All these four are my favorites from this year‘s list! 6y

The ‘unusual‘ love story told through the eyes of two deeply sensitive and wounded adolescents and their toxic relationship, perfectly expresses the agony of growing up. Author also managed to create a very tangible, dark atmosphere with some very shocking and painful moments ... My only complaint is the repetitive dynamics of their off-on relationship, which at a certain point becomes too dramatic, a little unconvincing and tiring. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Emilymdxn Amazing review!! I‘ve got this on hold at the library and can‘t wait to start it. You‘ve made me even more excited to read it 6y
Cinfhen Great review!! And maybe the first #ManBooker18 I might WANT to read 6y

Simona Thanks @Cinfhen I almost dare to say - that you will like it 😘 6y
Cinfhen Haha!! I trust you...#stacked 💟 6y
BarbaraBB I really liked this one. And the ending. (edited) 6y

Three unrelated short stories about three men who in their own way are fighting with losses, sorrow and regret. All three of them are distinguished by excellent prose, the first, Farouk‘s story is outstanding excellent. Just because of this story, the book is worth reading. And how do we get a novel from three short stories? By adding a fourth ... in which characters are loosely connected... Enough for a novel? Apparently yes... ⭐️⭐️⭐️

BarbaraBB ... or not 😉 6y
Simona @BarbaraBB I‘m voting for ‘not‘ too! 6y

Mother with 3 daughters is living alone on the island, and with the intrusion of the outside toxic world - story becomes complicated. Through the narrative of the sisters, we recognize the role of a disappeared father, mother, and the meaning of rituals practiced by that family. An excellent, very tangible dark, threatening, atmosphere, while the story itself makes no sense to me. Excellent prose and atmosphere, but unconvincing story. ⭐️⭐️⭐️

This book will win this year's Booker prize - cutting-edge fiction, fresh, poetic and current. Gunaratne talks about the sources of and connections between hate and fear, and while the story is set in modern-day London, its wisdom expands way beyond the city limits . #manbooker2018 #mbp2018 #finestfiction #indiebuddyreads

BarbaraBB It‘s my first book from the longlist. I am reading it right now! 6y
BarbaraBB By the way you‘re on a roll, you‘ve almost read all of them! Impressive! 6y
Simona @BarbaraBB Great start, I hope that you enjoy in it! I will finish my 12th book tomorrow (probably), but then I have to wait for publication day (at the end of the month) to complete the longlist 6y

BarbaraBB Did you like this one even more than 6y
BarbaraBB I really feel the weight of all these books I need to read before the shortlist will be announced 😅😉 6y
Simona @BarbaraBB Yes. These two stories are of course completely different, but in one point very comparable, and I think that ‘this‘ is better executed in The Long Take. Yet another debate for later.... You still have more than one month, and two of them are really quick read 😘 (edited) 6y

Through the relationship between mother-daughter, author develops a few themes, namely in such a way that she placed in the core of the story a classic myth. Very atmospheric story, set by/on the river, is also mystical and have a complex structure (and these are also the strongest points of this book), an interesting set of characters (but ' inconsistent ' characterization), and all wrapped together in quite nice prose. ⭐️⭐️⭐️

saresmoore This one is my most anticipated of the list, but, at this point, I wonder if there are any real standouts. 6y
charl08 Love that text effect. 6y
Simona @charl08 Thanks 😘 6y
Simona @saresmoore I‘m currently reading my eleventh book from the longlist, and I don‘t have great expectations anymore. It‘s a weak longlist, and for me, there is only one standout 6y

What a beautiful, atmospheric book! A soldier returns from WWII and tries to build a life for himself in LA. Although he finds new meaning in his work as a reporter, often covering social justice issues, his trauma and his disappointment with American society threaten to destroy him. The writing is highly poetic and pays tribute to film noir and jazz. #manbooker2018 #mbp2018 #indiebuddyreads #finestfiction
