I forgot to post a picture of my #jolabokaflodswap box when I sent this out last week. It traveled up the east coast and should be arriving today. Enjoy!

#DaysDevotedTo Day 8: #CoffeeTea with a Norwegian novel while I was in Bodo Norway early this year. This is part of the free “fika” offered by the hotel between 3-5 pm and- said to be a big part of Scandinavian culture. Reminded me of our merienda - byproduct of Spanish colonization.

Leniverse Fika is specifically Swedish, but it's basically the same thing in Norway only we call it "kaffekos" (yes, even if you don't drink coffee). 2mo

Mehso-so

Set in the early 1900's in Kenya & Tanzania, we witness the invasion of the Germans and later the British.

There were parts of this I was totally absorbed in, while some chapters I struggled through. Some characters were really well done and interesting, while others flat and didn't really have a role anywhere.

Now reaching the end, I really like this story (which has been a theme for me with this author's work).

Pickpick

Soft pick. Montale was a poet who also wrote short prose pieces for various newspapers just before and after WWII, most of them lightly fictionalized anecdotes from his own life. This book is a compendium of those newspaper columns, which collectively form a memoir of sorts. I liked the non-linear, piecemeal structure of this, as it seems to mimic what it's like getting to know another person in real life, a series of tiny glimpses that 👇

The_Penniless_Author ...gradually add up to a coherent picture. 5mo

Bailedbailed

I liked the premise and how the book started. Even the characters seemed interesting. But, the writing style was not for me. I thought I'd get used to it and that made me read like 40% of the book but it was simply annoying after that.

Today after getting my nails done I popped in to the op shop next-door to see whether I could find myself a Georgette Heyer @LeahBergen . I did not find a Heyer, but I did find these two 😍. For $2 each! #bookhaul #winning

BarbaraBB What I loved is so good!! 11mo
LeahBergen Well, those are some good finds! Let me know if you can‘t find a Heyer… I‘ll send you one! 😘 11mo
MrsMalaprop Thanks @LeahBergen I‘m sure I‘ll find one. Especially with @rissreads sending me links to book sales in our town. She‘s such a bad influence 🙄😂 11mo

MrsMalaprop @BarbaraBB That book keeps coming up & then I spotted it today. 🙏 11mo
CarolynM Keep looking out for the Heyer‘s, you are bound to find a few soon. And I agree with @BarbaraBB about What I Loved. 11mo
Rissreads I‘m on the hunt for you now Serena! It won‘t take us long! 🤣 11mo
Rissreads So what Heyer are we looking for? Which are the best @LeahBergen ? 11mo
Rissreads Which would you recommend @CarolynM ? 11mo
CoffeeK8 Venetia is good! My favorite is 11mo
LeahBergen @Rissreads Let‘s see … maybe be on the lookout for Cotillion, The Grand Sophy, Frederica, Arabella, These Old Shades (this one is Georgian era rather than Regency), or The Corinthian. Or whatever you can find! 😆😆 I‘ve actually not read Venetia yet but it seems to be a favourite of a lot of Heyer fans. Happy hunting! 11mo
CarolynM @Rissreads I‘ve only read a couple of the romances so I‘m not much help with those. The mysteries will be harder to find but, for what it‘s worth, No Wind of Blame and Behold Here‘s Poison are my favourites.🙂 11mo
LeahBergen @CarolynM I‘ll make a note of these titles! 👍 11mo

Pickpick

This has been on my shelf forever… and while it took a few pages (I had to reread the first 5 pages) to get a handle on the writing style, and then it blew me away. I could almost feel this story settling over me like a blanket while reading. Set in Cairo, this tells a story in 4 different perspectives.
