Iceland's Bell
Iceland's Bell | Halldor Laxness
7 posts | 6 read | 3 to read
Sometimes grim, sometimes uproarious, and always captivating, Icelands Bell by Nobel Laureate Halldr Laxness is at once an updating of the traditional Icelandic saga and a caustic social satire. At the close of the 17th century, Iceland is an oppressed Danish colony, suffering under extreme poverty, famine, and plague. A farmer and accused cord-thief named Jon Hreggvidsson makes a bawdy joke about the Danish king and soon after finds himself a fugitive charged with the murder of the kings hangman. In the years that follow, the hapless but resilient rogue Hreggvidsson becomes a pawn entangled in political and personal conflicts playing out on a far grander scale. Chief among these is the star-crossed love affair between Snaefridur, known as Icelands Sun, a beautiful, headstrong young noblewoman, and Arnas Arnaeus, the kings antiquarian, an aristocrat whose worldly manner conceals a fierce devotion to his downtrodden countrymen. As their personal struggle plays itself out on an international stage, Icelands Bell creates a Dickensian canvas of heroism and venality, violence and tragedy, charged with narrative enchantment on every page. From the Trade Paperback edition.

The Halldor Laxness museum in the outskirts of Reykjavík. No wonder he was able to write novels, short stories and plays - with that view!!! #halldorlaxness #laxness #iceland #myicelandicweek #icelandiclit

It's been a while since I updated my #BackpackEurope trip, but I have been travelling!! At least literary. In real life, I've been really busy moving, it sure takes time to prepare an apartment for sale!!

Went on to #Iceland after leaving London early in September, and had a beautiful stay with the tagged book. It gave a great picture of Iceland, the beautiful nature and the people in ancient Iceland.

Mehso-so

This was quite a bit. It is a historic novel but is not supposed to be one. 🤔 It shows the Icelandic society at the end of the 17th century, its forced dependence on Denmark and the struggle to gain freedom. The historic circumstances are told surrounding the story of the detained Jon Hreggvidsson and the persons affected by it. For me it was very hard to find access to the story and the writing. But in the end I quite liked it. #iceland #laxness
