Vanderbeekers of 141st Street | Karina Yan Glaser

This is still my favorite Christmas chapter book for youth.

The Vanderbeekers love their Harlem brownstone, so it comes as a shock to the family of 7 when a little before Christmas they discover their landlord will not be renewing their lease. The kids set out on a mission to change the mind of their grumpy, reclusive landlord.

CogsOfEncouragement I enjoyed this with my kids two years ago and suggested my mom read it this year. She loved it. 3y
MamaGina This one is on my coffee table waiting to be read before year end ... no youths around here! 😆 3y

Twins Maureen and Francine are also best friends, but in 6th grade Fran wants to be known as her own person and Maureen still wants to do everything together.

As the girls work out their differences they‘ll find more in common and learn to celebrate their uniqueness. Definitely a great middle grade read!

I loved this sweet story about a queer ice skater turned hockey player vlogging his way through his freshman year of college. I‘ll be picking up the next in the series for sure!

I love this book! I‘ve been doing online storytimes and read alouds for my library, but I couldn‘t be the one to read this one. I asked my son‘s friend who loves performing and I‘m so grateful he said yes.

Jasmine is a soap star, but now the leading lady of a new show. Her Leading Lady Plan definitely does not include falling for her handsome but standoffish co-star.
Steamy and delightful, this is a book to fall for!

When‘s young girl comes home upset after being told that girls can‘t be president, her mother tells the true story of vice presidential hopeful Kamala Harris.

Named after a flower with deep roots, the story begins with an exploration of Kamala‘s family, ending with her step aside from the 2020 presidential race, but not including the vice presidential nominee, “Kamala Harris is still writing her American story.”

We Are Water Protectors | Carole Lindstrom

This beautiful and simple story told by Lindstrom (Anishinabe/Métis) and Goade (Tlingit) tells the story of water, why it should be protected, and of the “great black snake” poisoning the earth.

The refrain “We stand/ With our songs/ And our drums/ We are still here” is a good reminder to the reader not to view Indigenous peoples as something from the past.

Great for preschool and elementary youth.

I listened to most of this one several months ago, but finished it last night. It was awesome, but I think you probably know that.

Jason Reynolds is a fantastic writer, and he understands his youth audience. Reynolds takes Ibram X Kendi‘s meatier Stamped from the Beginning and writes a history book that is NOT a history book, as Reynolds says. But it is. Just a really good one for youth.

I love Talia Hibbert‘s romance novels. This was just as good as the first and tackled grief and anxiety. It‘s also super steamy and full of sooo many iterations of “fuck” 🤣.

I listened to most of this while working on our new house which needs a ton of work before we move in. Thank goodness for audiobooks!!
