Clare-Dragonfly I was thinking of I Love Lucy too! 😂 19h
TheAromaofBooks So was Rebecca's intent to GOAD Maxim into murdering her ON PURPOSE??? Also, side note, I'm just not sure what I would do if my husband confessed to killing his first wife, no matter how terrible she was. I'm not confident I would be as “obviously I love you and will stay with you“ as our narrator is! 😂 18h
kwmg40 @TheAromaofBooks I would have trouble with that too! 18h
kwmg40 The doctor offered them cigarettes and sherry! What doctor would do that these days? It was a different time! 18h
Bookwormjillk @TheAromaofBooks yeah, I don‘t think that would have the same effect on me as it had on Jan. 17h
peanutnine @TheAromaofBooks yeah it seemed like Rebecca's way of taking him down with her, not realizing he would get away with it 17h
peanutnine The narrator is so desperate to be loved that she'll overlook some HUGE red flags. She's so worried about what others think of her, she can't imagine leaving him even for a good reason 17h
IndoorDame Totally agree about both of them! If Rebecca wants to off herself, go for it, but suicide by proxy totally makes her an #evilbitch And Jan staying with her husband who‘s perfect except for the whole I‘m a murderer thing is just nuts, like I‘m worried the girl has no basic self preservational instincts! 17h
5feet.of.fury I was so surprised by the doctor‘s report. What the heck? But, it gives everyone a good reason to believe the suicide… 16h
julieclair @TheAromaofBooks Yes to everything you said! Rebecca is evil and Jan is not a great decision-maker. 😂 15h

Sace Doc Baker!!! 3d
Bookwormjillk 🤣🤣🤣🤣 this pic. Does Danny think Rebecca was only in love with her? So many questions. 3d
julieclair I felt so very sorry for Ben. And yes, I do think Baker is a doctor and she really was pregnant. 3d
Crinoline_Laphroaig I couldn't help myself I binged to the end. 3d
BarkingMadRead @Crinoline_Laphroaig I did that days ago 🤣🤣🤣 3d
willaful I was really struck by the narrator's use of “sensual“ to describe Jack, in a completely negative way. Her fastidiousness seems pathological. A murderer is fine, as long as he's refined. (edited) 2d
Aimeesue Sometimes I just want to slap Jack. Or punch him in the neck. Grrrrr. Poor Ben. He did just what Rebecca wanted, though, didn‘t he? (edited) 2d
Clare-Dragonfly Poor Ben! My Danny in the cottage theory is definitely busted 😂 I appreciate the irony that it‘s Rebecca‘s own threat that is making it difficult for Favell to prove her murder. (edited) 2d
Clare-Dragonfly @julieclair Agreed. Most likely pregnant with Jack‘s child, or at least she believed it was his. 2d
Roary47 @Crinoline_Laphroaig @dabbe @BarkingMadRead Same! I couldn‘t handle it. 🤣 2d

I've been meaning to reread this for ages, so I'm glad that the #pemberlittens #hashtagparade finally motivated to do so. It certainly hits differently as a adult than it did when I was a high schooler. 😅

Interesting to see what I'd forgotten (what a timid wet noodle our narrator is for so much of the book; how much she lives in her head; how many problems would've been avoided with some good old communication) and what stuck. Still loved it!

dabbe 🤩😀🤗 3d

Ruthiella He‘s such a slime ball! He cares only about leveraging this for money-he doesn‘t care about justice. 4d
julieclair @5feet.of.fury 💯 4d
Clare-Dragonfly He certainly doesn‘t seem very believable. I believe him (I bet I know what she wanted to tell him) but he has no proof that Rebecca wrote that note the night she disappeared! 3d
Clare-Dragonfly @5feet.of.fury Right??!? Hmm… he was sitting with Danny… does she know about the note? 3d
Aimeesue @mcctrish Hahahaha! He really does! 3d
Aimeesue Jack is just UGH. Marry your cousin? I‘m still not over the ickiness of that. I mean, I know it was done, but yuck. 3d
willaful @Aimeesue It was pretty common in England. Fanny marries her cousin in Mansfield Park. (edited) 3d
mcctrish @Aimeesue maybe it‘s why the English had such horrible teeth 🤣🤣🤣 3d
Aimeesue @willaful Sure, back on the day, but in the 1930‘s? I don‘t think it was common then. 2d
Aimeesue @mcctrish Definitely can lead to a lot of health issues! 2d
willaful @mcctrish There were definitely some serious inbreeding problems in English history! 2d

5feet.of.fury He certainly didn‘t do himself any favors. They served him a plausible excuse for the initial identification & he brushed it off immediately. Everyone just having an awkward lunch waiting for the other shoe to drop 6d

IndoorDame I‘ve been dying for her to snap out of it and act like this with Mrs. D. but did it really take a murder to get her there?! Jan‘s perspective is all out of whack! 6d
ElizaMarie "I'm afraid it does not concern me very much what Mrs. de Winter used to do," I said. "I am Mrs. de Winter now, you know.” —— ?? 6d
Clare-Dragonfly So this is what it takes to get Jan to grow a backbone! I know it‘s not really the murder, it‘s the belief that Maxim didn‘t love Rebecca. Her priorities are all out of whack. I wonder what exactly Frank knows, and why he is protecting Maxim. 6d
Bookwormjillk Life according to the Colonel: Murder ok poetry bad. This is why rich people get away with crimes. 6d
ElizaMarie @Clare-Dragonfly , I feel like Frank knows pretty much everything. I mean, maybe not the threat of the heir, but Max did it. The secret is safe with Frank, who knows Rebecca's type, her evil, manipulative ways. If he could look the other way as long as he did (unless he just figured it out), he has no plans of coming clean. 6d
5feet.of.fury Also Maxim‘s obsession with Jan looking young and naive is so icky 5d
dabbe @Clare-Dragonfly Especially since Rebecca seems to have had a fling with him as well. Maybe he's in love with Rebecca. That would make things even more interesting. 🧐 5d
willaful @5feet.of.fury Yes. He's never going to allow her to truly mature. 5d
TheAromaofBooks @willaful @5feet.of.fury - I definitely think it's a strong reaction to how horrible his life was with Rebecca who was “worldly,“ a serial cheater, into drugs, etc. His response seems to have been to find someone as “innocent“ as possible and his fear is that as she learns more of the world she'll become another Rebecca. I think his hellish time with Rebecca has left him unable to see that genuine maturity between two reasonable people leads to ⬇ 5d
TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) a working partnership that benefits both people. His experience with women seems to be on a “knows nothing“ to “loves to do drugs, sleep around, and rub it in her husband's face“ scale, so while the whole “she needs to stay innocent“ thing does come off kind of creepy, I think he believes he's protecting both himself and the narrator, rather than holding her back. 5d
5feet.of.fury @TheAromaofBooks I can see what you are saying, makes sense. although we are just taking Max‘s word that Rebecca was all these horrible things… I‘m not sure what to believe from him. If he‘s just told this story now that the murder is out. 5d
Roary47 @5feet.of.fury Right?! I like your thoughts @TheAromaofBooks in him choosing her innocence because it is the opposite of Rebecca. I want to think the best of Max, but he has baggage. He should not have jumped into his relationship with Jan, but here we are. 5d
willaful @5feet.of.fury There are some other indications, like her apparent treatment of Ben, and her moves on Frank -- but there too, there's no real evidence is there? 5d
5feet.of.fury @willaful that‘s true, Frank does strike me as reliable, no hidden agenda towards Jan 4d
willaful @5feet.of.fury I trust him, but if someone wanted to write an “other side of the story“ for Rebecca, they'd have some plausible deniability. 4d
TheAromaofBooks @5feet.of.fury - Oooo great point! I guess I am just taking Maxim at face value because the narrator is. But she hasn't actually proven to be a particularly reliable judge of character so far. 4d

Crinoline_Laphroaig This is where I lose any sympathy I had for Jan. It doesn't matter Max is a murderer, what's important is HE DIDN'T LOVE REBECCA! She becomes a bit like Rebecca in that she doesn't care about anything except what she wants. I could see her going over the edge in later years and murderibg Max because she thinks he doesn't love her enough. 7d
See All 18 Comments
BarkingMadRead @Crinoline_Laphroaig that‘s a really good point, it shows just how much she hasn‘t grown up! 7d
julieclair Whoa! Didn‘t see that one coming! And Jan… she‘s a woman obsessed… it‘s like the knowledge that Max didn‘t love Rebecca is pulling her back from tipping over the edge of madness. 7d
Clare-Dragonfly Augh… I was afraid she was going to try to protect him. I hope she fails. Will they find the bullet in the ship? It must be somewhere, so it‘s either in her body or in the cottage. But her body has decomposed (I think the cop said it was skeletal), so the bullet could have fallen somewhere they can‘t find it… (edited) 7d
5feet.of.fury Yeah this is wild, she gets on board with the cover up wayyyy too quickly 7d
IndoorDame How is having someone else‘s baby the one thing about living with her that tips it over the edge!!!!??? That would seriously NOT be my biggest problem if she were my wife! 7d
ElizaMarie I had thought Rebecca was a cheater when they talked about these long nights in the cottage. Am I the only one that‘s okay with murder!? Ha. I mean. Not to say murder is super okay, but she did back him into a corner. And —- she was evil and… you are “allowed” to kill the antichrist. Right!? #NoItsJustMe 7d
Roary47 @IndoorDame I agree, why is this the straw for him. I‘m thinking it was the delivery. @ElizaMarie I‘m with you. More a take down would have been more preferred, but your right he was backed into a corner with pure evil. If he wasn‘t backed into a corner I see that he could have showed her true colors. Exposed her infidelity. Something. 7d
Ruthiella All I can say is keep reading folks! I have my own ideas about Rebecca‘s motivations. I also noted Jan‘s primary focus now of being truly loved and I think I would have had the same blind obsession at 21 or 22. (edited) 7d
ElizaMarie @Roary47 Yes. like the question: “Would you go back in time and kill baby Hitler?“ I am guessing, yes.

But I agree. If she wasn't so cocky with her evilness. I am sure Max would have had no choice but to get divorced from her eventually. But, she was slipping up so much, it was going to all come out what type of person she was eventually.
7d
Bookwormjillk This is my 3rd time reading and for some reason I remembered this as the end of the book, but we still have a ways to go. So hard to stop today. 6d
willaful @IndoorDame It's because the baby would inherit Manderley. It's all about the property. 6d
willaful @ElizaMarie That seemed implausible to me too. I'm sure Max could've found evidence 6d
dabbe @Ruthiella Rebecca truly egged him on; it seemed as if she wanted to get as big a rise out of him as she could. As you so eloquently said, #keepreadingfolks! 🤩 6d
dabbe @willaful Agree 💯. Maxim loves Manderley more than anyone--even the narrator. His de Winter pride is at stake. 6d

BarkingMadRead @TheAromaofBooks omg so creepy and I legit forgot ad well, it‘s been 4 years since I read it and I forgot so much! 1w
IndoorDame @TheAromaofBooks same!!! This scene never gets any less horrifying or unexpected! Really any of the scenes with Mrs. D. ! 1w
TheBookHippie I‘ve no recollection of being this creepy although it‘s been a long time since I read it, but yikes. 1w
daena The fact that Danvers lays it all out there with zero shame and a whole lot of obsessive crazy makes it that much more terrifying. It's like she has nothing left to lose because she's already lost Rebecca. 1w
dabbe I remembered this scene because of the movie. If you‘ve never seen the 40s version, you should. The pic posted by @BarkingMadRead says it all. It won best picture in 1940, and Olivier, Fontaine, and Anderson (as Danvers) were all nominated for their acting roles. Judith Anderson is absolutely chilling as Danvers. 😱 1w

dabbe @Roary47 😘 1w
Aimeesue @dabbe whoohoo! Thanks for the link! 1w
dabbe To me, this feels like the climatic chapter, where the narrator is at her lowest point. Even though she starts of facing Danny, Danvers overwhelms her with her #rebeccarebeccarebecca crap, and Jan descends into darkness, even ready to jump and commit suicide. Then, BAM! A deus ex machina to break the trance of Rebecca with the explosion going off. If that hadn't happened, Jan would have jumped. But of course, there's more to the story ... 🤩 1w
Crinoline_Laphroaig @Roary47 I read ahead to because tomorrow and the weekend is busy. It's definitely 😲 moment. 1w
Clare-Dragonfly @dabbe Ooh, thanks! I saved it to watch later—I don‘t want any spoilers! This chapter was sooooo creepy 😱 1w
KAO @dabbe Thank you for the link to the film! Saving it for after I have finished the book! This is my first time to read Rebecca, so it‘s all new to me—and delightfully creepy at times. 1w
julieclair This chapter was sooooo creepy, and so well written! DuMaurier was a master! Thanks for the link to the movie @dabbe. I have never seen it and totally want to watch it once we‘ve finished the book. 1w

Clare-Dragonfly I mean, she ALSO should have told Beatrice about Danny setting her up. But let‘s be real, that was never going to happen. 1w
BarkingMadRead @Clare-Dragonfly and she had the perfect opportunity! Whyyyyyy did she not?!? 1w
Bookwormjillk @Clare-Dragonfly YES! She should have told Max and Bea about Mrs Danvers. 1w
peanutnine She definitely should have told them about Danvers but like @Clare-Dragonfly I'm not surprised she didn't. She doesn't seem to realize that she has power over her as an employer. But she probably thought they wouldn't believe her 1w
daena Maxim is the worst! As the chapters move forward my disgust of him grows. 1w
willaful @daena I'm really feeling why the author was pissed at this being called a romance. 1w
daena @willaful totally! 💯 1w
Crinoline_Laphroaig @peanutnine @Clare-Dragonfly I never under when characters don't tell what happened. I would be yelling it out. And #DreadfulDanny would be packing her bags. Honestly if she just told Bea she would have told Maxim and he would have fired Mrs D immediately. 1w
Crinoline_Laphroaig ^understand. Litsy needs edit option on comments! 1w
dabbe I, too, want the narrator to snap back and have a backbone, but she just doesn't. She's terrified of Danvers (and even Maxim at times) and is so UNSURE of herself that she can't fight back. Max wanted her as Alice in Wonderland--fiitting since Alice is a complete innocent, not worldly like Rebecca or Caroline de Winter. The irony is, though, that Max is primarily responsible for Jan's loss of innocence. #sosad 😞 1w
Ruthiella @dabbe Perfect analysis! 👌 1w
TheAromaofBooks @Clare-Dragonfly @peanutnine @Crinoline_Laphroaig @dabbe @Ruthiella - I'm interested to see if Jan even REALIZES that Danny set her up. I think she is going to excuse Mrs. D with a kind of “oh she didn't know people would be upset/it was an accident“ thing. 1w
BarkingMadRead @TheAromaofBooks that‘s a good point, although that creepy smile on Mrs D should hopefully clue her in! 1w
julieclair @TheAromaofBooks If she does that, it will totally be a throw-the-book moment for me! 1w
peanutnine @julieclair @TheAromaofBooks omg same! Hopefully she isn't THAT naive by now 1w
dabbe @TheAromaofBooks Agree! Jan wanted so much to believe that Danny was finally being nice to her that she had the rose-colored glasses look in her eyes. And, too true, @BarkingMadRead. That smirk and the closing of the door in the west wing should have been HUGE clues for Jan. What a scene! 1w

BarkingMadRead @Librarybelle @Bookwormjillk I would be in so much trouble because I can never seem to shut off my face 🤣🤣🤣 1w
Crinoline_Laphroaig It's such a Train Wreck of a Chapter. I know what's going to happen and still I yell at Jan 'WHY WOULD YOU TRUST THE EVIL MRS D"⁉️ 1w
Crinoline_Laphroaig 'Oh don't treat me like a child' as she continually acts like one with the daydreaming and hiding around corners. And the fingers in her mouth and the nail biting makes me crazy. 1w
Ruthiella @Bookwormjillk 🚩🚩🚩🚩💥 1w
Ruthiella At this point, I think Jan would have been happier if she‘d married Frank Crawley aka George Glass. 1w
Clare-Dragonfly Why did she do what Danny said?! Obviously terrible idea! Also obviously terrible: Maxim yelling at her to change and of course never telling her even the slightest clue as to why everyone is so upset. I just hope Frank or Beatrice will explain in the next chapter. 1w
Clare-Dragonfly @Ruthiella Yes, I keep thinking Frank seems like a much better match for her. Maybe she‘ll throw over Maxim! 🤞🏻 1w
TheAromaofBooks Everything here was absolutely crazy, but I did laugh - yesterday, Jan is like “I may need to feign illness to make sure I don't have to have Christmas with Beatrice's crazy crew“ and today it was “Maxim, did you know Beatrice plays charades at Christmas every year?“ “Yes, that's why I never go“ 😂 😂 😂 So they do have SOME common ground! 😆 1w
Roary47 Correct me if I‘m wrong. Could she not fire Ms D? Am I correct in understanding that she wore Rebecca‘s dress? I bet she looked pretty, but man they kept telling her to dress as Alice and she just wanted to dress up and feel special. Based on her background I‘m sure this was the first time she could feel pretty in a dress, and Max just burst that bubble. What an emotional hit. 😞 1w
BarkingMadRead @Roary47 she had the dress made to match a painting of Max‘s great grandmother I think. I‘m guessing that Rebecca once did the same 1w
peanutnine @Clare-Dragonfly @Ruthiella she and Frank would be so much better together! They're both so shy and awkward 😅 1w
julieclair @Roary47 Jan can totally fire Danny. Surely she will, after this? Even though Jan has no spine, she can‘t allow Danny to keep living & working there. Can she? 1w
Clare-Dragonfly @Roary47 @julieclair I bet if it even occurs to Jan that she could fire Danny, she‘ll quail at the thought of explaining to Maxim why she wants her gone. Even though I bet he wouldn‘t even listen to any explanation she gave, he‘d just be surprised. She could do it! But she won‘t. 1w
Clare-Dragonfly @TheAromaofBooks Yes, I thought the same! 😂 1w
julieclair @Clare-Dragonfly Unfortunately, I believe you‘re correct. Poor Jan… she needs a friend who can give her advice and bolster her courage. 1w
Clare-Dragonfly @julieclair She needs a therapist! 1w
dabbe @BarkingMadRead And I believe it was the last ball they had at Manderley, so Rebecca's costume would have perhaps still been on everyone's minds--especially Maxim's. 1w
julieclair @Clare-Dragonfly 💯😂 1w

Ruthiella @Bookwormjillk Agree. But if she were to assert herself, they would back down. She‘s always assuming and never asserting. 2w
Roary47 My heart broke a little for Jan here. How tough to be meeting an influential matriarch in your husband‘s family. Then be told “what did you do to Rebecca, I liked Rebecca, where is Rebecca?” 💔 (edited) 2w
BarkingMadRead @Roary47 I‘m amazed at how many people are willing to say more or less the same thing to her! 2w
TheAromaofBooks We are caretaking my grandma right now and I really related with a lot of Jan's thoughts in this chapter, about how strange it is when someone gets old, and wondering what they were really like when they were young and vibrant. 2w
julieclair @TheAromaofBooks Those passages really resonated with me as well. 2w
julieclair I had a sick feeling in my stomach from the moment the grandmother seemed delighted that Jan had come to visit. I was worried she was thinking Jan was Rebecca. 💔 And poor Jan, she did nothing wrong, but her very presence caused the frail old lady major distress. 2w
TheAromaofBooks Can't believe I forgot to mention my favorite line - “I had an uneasy feeling we might be asked to spend the approaching Christmas with Beatrice. Perhaps I could have influenza.“ 😂 2w

Librarybelle @BarkingMadRead I know! It‘s been several years for me, and I kept thinking “how could I have forgotten this!!”😂 2w
Bookwormjillk This was really creepy. Run Jan, run! 2w
peanutnine Sooo creepy. Also, I highly doubt Danvers was as buddy buddy with Rebecca as she's making it out, like they were best friends 2w
BarkingMadRead @peanutnine I agree, it seems like rebecca was more likely to tease her 2w
TheBookHippie Creeeeeeepy. 2w
Ruthiella @Librarybelle @BarkingMadRead I also forgot just how creepy this chapter was. 2w
Librarybelle @Ruthiella It makes me wonder what else I have forgotten as the story unfolds. 2w
willaful We're definitely in gothic territory now! 2w
ElizaMarie @peanutnine @BarkingMadRead Yes ☑️ it feels like Danvers has to be exaggerating their closeness. Also. Like I get it, you cared about her, but to keep touching her things and putting flowers in her room… feels so weird to me. 2w
julieclair @willaful Yes! This chapter has all the gothic novel vibes. And I‘m loving it! 2w
Crinoline_Laphroaig So creepy. 2w
Clare-Dragonfly CREEPY, DANNY!!! 2w
Clare-Dragonfly I am even more sure now it was Danvers in the cottage threatening Ben. She‘s creeping around being obsessed with everything Rebecca ever touched. (edited) 2w
Roary47 It‘s almost as if Danvers loved her just as much if not more than Max. 2w

Bookwormjillk Danny 🤣🤣🤣 2w
BarkingMadRead @Bookwormjillk I just can‘t 🤣 I can‘t imagine her with any nickname at all ☠️ 2w
dabbe At least there's a little respite for our narrator who feels more like herself with Maxim away. She doesn't have to pretend to be someone she isn't and can just be herself--for a little while. 2w
ElizaMarie So much mystery in this chapter!!!! I'm super intrigued! 2w
Clare-Dragonfly I think it was Mrs. Danvers in the cabin threatening Ben!!! Rebecca would have no reason to keep her cabin activities a secret, and would probably think Ben is beneath her. Mrs. Danvers fits the description better and is definitely acting fishy. 2w
BarkingMadRead @Clare-Dragonfly ohhhhh that‘s a really good theory and I could totally see Danvers doing that! 2w
Bookwormjillk Jan is really reminding me of a person at work who decides that each time she has a scheduled check in with our shared supervisor she‘s going to get fired then when I tell her she‘s not she gets mad when she‘s not promoted. The stories she tells herself in her head. Cool it Jan. Max isn‘t dead just because he went to London. #DontBelieveEverythingYouThink 2w
TheAromaofBooks @Bookwormjillk - Seriously! I was reading that section like COOL YOUR JETS, my word! 2w

Bookwormjillk And at least Max doesn‘t smell or complain about soggy toast. True romance. 2w

BarkingMadRead @Bookwormjillk a girl has to have her standards 🤷🏻‍♀️ 2w
TheAromaofBooks This line really struck me, Maxim is talking: “Fancy not getting a hold of her when you broke the thing and saying, 'Here, Mrs. Danvers, get this mended.' “ This is just so typical of Maxim's perspective. He is used to servants/commands/obedience (and it sounds like Rebecca was as well). Our narrator is uncomfortable with even the concept of giving orders (we saw this when she was in Monte Carlo as well) or making demands. I think Maxim can't ⬇ 2w
TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) get his head around anyone being shy of or intimidated by servants. I do feel bad for the narrator, but I honestly frequently have similar feelings to Maxim's - YOU'RE THE BOSS so step up!!! On the other hand, Maxim obviously is blind (intentionally?) to the narrator's need for some guidance and suggestions on what she should be doing, and completely leaves her hanging. 2w
Clare-Dragonfly @TheAromaofBooks Yes—it‘s similar with the socializing; he insists that it has nothing to do with being brought up to it, but that‘s because it‘s been his world for his whole life and he doesn‘t realize how different it can be for Jan. I think Clarice‘s mother quite likes her and it was nasty of him to say it was an insult! But also, anyone else think of Darcy and Lizzie when Maxim complains that Jan is shy and won‘t try to socialize? 😆 2w
KAO @TheAromaofBooks I agree with all of your observations. The descriptions in these chapters are luscious sometimes though! 2w
ElizaMarie This chapter gutted me. Poor Jan! She almost speaks up then quickly backs down and worried about Maxim‘s feelings over hers. Poor baby! Also —- she should redecorate the whole room! I feel like she was hinting at it but needs Maxim to suggest (the order the staff) to get it done. 2w
dabbe I keep reminding myself that the shy-can't-do-anything-without-approval Jan is in the past. The narrator is our future gal who seems (in my mind) much more forthright than the flashback Jan. She's her harshest critic who is looking back on herself in the cruelest of ways. I have hope for her. And Lord Byron ain't got anything next to the brooding Maxim. #hyperbyronichero 2w
rubyslippersreads Jan should have taken a page from Scarlett O‘Hara‘s book and thrown the cupid against the wall. 😂 2w
julieclair @ElizaMarie Yes! She needs to redecorate the whole room! And buy a new wardrobe. And I wish she would realize she has the power to do both. 2w

ElizaMarie I‘m so sad for her! To feel the way she does (inadequate). I wish she was able to talk to her HUSBAND about these things, but #AtLeastSheHasFrank. He is such a sweet man :) Also, yes “modest” has a billion different meanings. #WhatDoYouMean 2w
dabbe I'm glad she has Frank, too, but ouch to his last line: “I suppose she was the most beautiful creature I ever saw in my life.“

Yet ... he calls Rebecca a “creature.“ I looked up the definition and found two interesting thoughts re: Miss-holier-than-thou Rebecca:
1. an animal, as distinct from a human being
2. a fictional being, typically a FRIGHTENING one.

Perhaps Rebecca ain't all she's cracked up to be. 🧐
2w
julieclair @dabbe The word “creature” jumped out at me, too! Such an interesting word choice. What could it mean? 🤔 2w

TheBookHippie @Bookwormjillk it‘s mood setting too!! 2w
BarkingMadRead @peanutnine yeah, that abrupt change in scenery = atmosphere for sure 2w
Clare-Dragonfly I was glad to see Jan speaking more, but I wish she would have pushed harder! Also 🙄 at Maxim complaining that she doesn‘t have the memories that make him sad. Of course she doesn‘t, and you won‘t tell her what the issue is! 2w
Graciouswarriorprincess The contrast reminded me of the house too. One part light and the other dark/guarded. 2w

See All 17 Comments
peanutnine It's crazy how everyone just acts like she should know her way around the house and all the routines. I guess they assumed Max told her ahead of time? She definitely needs the courage to speak up and ask questions 3w
Ruthiella I think the staff were possibly also expecting another Rebecca - who would tell them “I don‘t want a fire in the morning room, light it in the library”. 3w
Crinoline_Laphroaig This is where I start to really dislike Max. He just dumps her in the house, doesn't bother to even show her around, and he knows Evil Mrs D is manipulative. Also he acts like he's so busy running Manderley but he's been gone for WEEKS. And it not like today when you can keep in touch by email and smart phones. I'm quite sure Manager of the estate doesn't need his help. 3w
ElizaMarie I had to look up the plant (ha!) I thought I knew what it was, but I wasn't 100% sure. Anyway, I can't tell if Mrs. D wants her to be more arrogant like the old Mrs or um.. what? It sounds like Jan is way more easygoing and could be easier to “serve“ under but instead, they keep bullying her. And shame on Max, he knows Mrs. D is difficult but.. yet doesn't even show her the after-breakfast room!? 3w
Crinoline_Laphroaig I just want to yell at Jan to stop daydreaming. Which makes it sound like I don't like this book but I really do. 3w
julieclair Jan needs a spine for sure. She‘s letting the servants walk all over her. But she also needs to ask more questions, so she can learn how things work at Manderley. Everyone already knows she‘s clueless, so why not ask? I wonder if we‘ll ever find out what‘s up with Mrs. D and/or exactly what happened to Rebecca? (edited) 3w
dabbe So glad you posted this pic! What about those bloody rhododendrons on the pathway to Manderley? Jan HATES them. They're too full of life, too large, too in-your-face, too ... like Rebecca? Wonder if there's some symbolism there? 😂 3w
Roary47 I‘m with many of you in your upset with Max. He could have waited at least a day to show her around. Jan also might just be trying to be nice on top of her not asking questions and speaking up. 3w
TheAromaofBooks @julieclair - I felt the same way. Like when she pretended like she already knew the way to the morning room. She hasn't even been there 24 hours! Why would it be embarrassing to ask where that is?? I always feel bad for the narrator when I read this book, but also spend about half the time just wanting to shake her and tell her to stop assuming the worst about everything! 3w
Clare-Dragonfly I thought it was weird that all the servants refer to Rebecca as Mrs. de Winter as though Jan isn‘t Mrs. de Winter now… but then Mrs. Danvers did call her that, so I don‘t know what to think! Would the servants like them to be completely interchangeable? 3w
Aimeesue @dabbe Symbolism?? What symbolism?? I must have missed it. 😂 I‘m def on Team NO Rhododenrons though. They too extra for me. 3w

IndoorDame I would‘ve been disappointed not to get the ocean room! And I don‘t think she‘s nearly upset enough about Mrs. Danvers. Bad bad vibes. Also, I don‘t care how naive Jan is, she should know she needs new clothes before pulling up at Manderly. 3w
See All 17 Comments
Ruthiella From day one, Mrs Danvers has Jan‘s number and she knows how to manipulate and undermine her. Maxim is the only person who has really any power over her and he‘s clueless. 3w
BarkingMadRead @IndoorDame 💯 and how could Max not realize that?!? I was waiting for him to give her Rebecca‘s clothes or something crazy like that! 3w
Bookwormjillk Jan needs to grow a pair and ask for the ocean view and some clothes. 3w
ElizaMarie I want the big room that overlooks the ocean! But maybe Maxium always secretly wished his x wanted to have the rose room? So hard to tell because he is mostly mute! (Having such a hard time only reading one chapter a day) 3w
Clare-Dragonfly I am the odd one out, I‘d want the room with the roses! Surely you can always go hang out by the ocean whenever you want. 3w
Crinoline_Laphroaig I always thought Max saying he liked the room with Rose View was actually covering up that he didn't think he new wife would want to sleep in the dead wife's room. 3w
Crinoline_Laphroaig @IndoorDame absolutely on the clothes. She's been in Monte for weeks she should know that. 3w
Crinoline_Laphroaig @Bookwormjillk And Max should have insisted on buying her a new wardrobe on the honeymoon. Or is he so insecure that he wants her dumpy and afraid? 3w
Bookwormjillk @Crinoline_Laphroaig I don‘t know if he even thinks about her that much 3w
Roary47 @Bookwormjillk well he did buy her the brushes. He seems to be clueless on other stuff though. I‘m surprised Jan didn‘t get frostbite in this chapter. So many cold shoulders. Eeesh. 3w
Clare-Dragonfly @Crinoline_Laphroaig I thought HE doesn‘t want to sleep in his dead wife‘s room. 3w

BarkingMadRead @Ruthiella so pathetic, and I hate that she just gives in to everything. Yeah, he‘s had a fancy wedding, but she hasn‘t! (edited) 3w
TheAromaofBooks One of the things that always gets me with this book is how much of what we are reading does NOT happen - we are constantly getting scenes from the narrator's imagination, things she can see happening but aren't actually reality. The entire section of seeing herself saying goodbye to Max, seeing herself going to New York, seeing herself being introduced to boys there - it's like we read the real story but also the parallel possibilities. 3w
BarkingMadRead @TheAromaofBooks so true! It‘s like the only time she has a personality is in her own head 3w
ElizaMarie I mean… there was NO time to say he loved her! He had marmalade for breakfast!!!! (Ha) #OhJan #MarmaladeTakesTime (edited) 3w
Clare-Dragonfly I wonder if we‘re going to get a Han and Leia moment 😂 3w
BarkingMadRead @Clare-Dragonfly that would be epic 🤣🤣 #iloveyou #iknow 3w
IndoorDame @BarkingMadRead @TheAromaofBooks yes!!! And she‘s fascinating as the unreliable narrator because the writing is so intoxicating and I always get swept away in her fantasies even though I know it‘s a sham 3w
julieclair @TheAromaofBooks @BarkingMadRead @IndoorDame Yes! 💯! The writing of her mind‘s eye is so beautiful, and the reality of Max‘s dialogue is so blunt and spare. 3w
Roary47 @Ruthiella @BarkingMadRead I thought the same thing about the marriage proposal and the fancy wedding. Lol I like that #MarmaladeTakesTime @ElizaMarie Our narrator, Jan, reminds me of Sansa now with her imaginative mind verses reality @TheAromaofBooks @IndoorDame 3w
5feet.of.fury @Roary47 I wasn‘t even thinking that, but she does remind me of Sansa in that sense -no idea what people‘s motivations are, things are all supposed to play out like a story but don‘t. 3w
5feet.of.fury Hoppy really annoyed me in this bit, even if Jan is naive (no dispute) she really felt the need to take her down a peg, doesn‘t matter that she‘s right, what a jerk. 3w
ElizaMarie @5feet.of.fury YES! I mean she kinda went to the whole “what did you do?“ and I thought she was alluding to the fact that she thought she tricked him into a proposal, but then at the same time calling her young and naive and just... Ugh! 3w
Ruthiella @Roary47 @5feet.of.fury Sansa Stark is a good parallel for clueless, romantic Jan. 👍 3w
kwmg40 I laughed when I read the part where Maxim orders breakfast, then takes out an emery board and starts filing his nails, right before he proposes marriage. Is it normal for rich people to file their nails in fancy hotel restaurants while waiting for their food? 😂 3w
BarkingMadRead @kwmg40 I don‘t know if it‘s normal, it‘s definitely repulsive 3w
5feet.of.fury @ElizaMarie yeah being a nosey Nelly in everyone‘s business & being confused by the whirlwind is one thing, but to tell the poor young woman that she‘s going to bore everyone at Manderlay‘s parties was so spiteful. 3w
Clare-Dragonfly @kwmg40 I definitely think Maxim is just a weirdo 😂 3w

Ruthiella @ElizaMarie 😂 I can just see the look of concern on Carol Brady‘s face! 3w
dabbe Jan (perfect name @Ruthiella! 🤩) = Jane in JANE EYRE
Maxim = Rochester in JANE EYRE
So many likenesses to these two books and characters! 😱
3w
BarkingMadRead @dabbe there are so many similarities! 3w
julieclair Oh poor Jan, she‘s really got it bad. And I actually think Mrs. van Hopper‘s description of Max was spot on: “queer-tempered, I should think, difficult to know.” 3w
Roary47 Hmmm. Young and innocent Jan. Jealousy does not become your lack of details. 🤣 3w
ElizaMarie @TheAromaofBooks ah that checks out. 40 and she is 21. Okay. Not great but…. Ugh! That is such a huge power dynamic - age, status 3w
TheAromaofBooks @ElizaMarie - I agree. Bookwormjillk Jan 😂 🏈 3w
rubyslippersreads @Ruthiella Jan is perfect! 3w
Crinoline_Laphroaig I need to find a book about gardens in DDuM books. "The daffodils were in bloom, stirring in the evening breeze, golden heads cupped upon lean stalks, and however many you might pick there would be no thinning of the ranks, they were massed like an army, shoulder to shoulder. On a bank below the lawns, crocuses were planted, golden, pink, and mauve, but by this time they would be past their best, dropping and fading, like pallid snowdrops.⬇️ 3w
Crinoline_Laphroaig The primrose was more vulgar, a homely pleasant creature who appeared in every cranny like a weed. Too early yet for bluebells, their heads were still hidden beneath last year‘s leaves, but when they came, dwarfing the more humble violet, they choked the very bracken in the woods, and with their color made a challenge to the sky....People who plucked bluebells from the woods were vandals; he had forbidden it at Manderley." 3w
Crinoline_Laphroaig So many flowers in this Chapter. I highlighted so many. 3w
Roary47 @Ruthiella I love it! Jan is who I will imagine her to be. Plus we don‘t know her actual age either. Are they on a date showing she‘s older than a child? 3w
BarkingMadRead @Roary47 I get the idea that she‘s an adult, but maybe a bit younger than Max 3w
Ruthiella @Roary47 I am reading a bit ahead. I think in chapter five it‘s confirmed she is 21. 👍 But Maxim is “old enough to be her father”, so 35 to 40 years old, I imagine. 🤔 3w
Clare-Dragonfly @Crinoline_Laphroaig Yes, the descriptions are so vivid and wonderful! I can see the flowers so clearly! 3w

KAO I am already enjoying this! The description of 4:30 teatime in the narrator‘s memories is perfect—especially to someone like me who cherishes teatime! 4w
See All 28 Comments
BarkingMadRead @KAO I was all ready to post a pic of teatime until she mentioned Mrs Van Hopper 🤣 4w
IndoorDame Mrs. Van Hopper is amazing! You can picture her so vividly from the very first page she‘s introduced! 4w
Ruthiella Mrs. Van Hopper is wonderfully awful! 😂 And who hasn‘t met someone like that before. 4w
5feet.of.fury openly staring with the lorgnette 🧐 I love all the little details that set to scene 4w
dabbe For much of the first two chapters, Manderley seems to be the main character. And even though the narrator and her husband seem happy as they travel from hotel to hotel, some tragedy broods underneath. It's interesting, too, how Manderley even has a name, but the narrator chooses not to name herself. 3w
peanutnine @dabbe I was wondering if we were going to get her name or not, definitely an interesting choice not to reveal it 3w
Bookwormjillk Mrs Van Hopper is like someone out of Austen 3w
TheAromaofBooks I love how the narrator uses Mrs. VH to contrast to herself - by learning more about Mrs. VH we also learn more about the narrator herself. 3w
BarkingMadRead @Bookwormjillk I thought the same! @peanutnine we never find our name, it definitely goes along with how she feels about herself 3w
dabbe @peanutnine Well, at least now she doesn't. You know, though, it makes sense so far because she hasn't had any dialogue yet. She's been describing everything and everyone involved in the flashback that's going to be the book. 3w
peanutnine @dabbe that's true. No one has actually addressed her yet. It reads like a diary so far, I'm getting Tenant of Wildfell Hall vibes 3w
dabbe @peanutnine Ooh, that's another book I love! 🤩 3w
Aimeesue @5feet.of.fury The lorgnette - the enemy of other people‘s privacy! 😂 3w
Aimeesue @KAO Those were some teas at Manderley! That one paragraph made me hungry 🧁 🫖 3w
willaful @Aimeesue Same!

That's a great pic of Mrs VH -- from the movie?
3w
Crinoline_Laphroaig This is what's draws me in: "I think of half past four at Manderley, and the table drawn before the library fire. The door flung open, punctual to the minute, and the performance, never varying, of the laying of the tea, the silver tray, the kettle, the snowy cloth." I sooo love a good tea scene. ? 3w
BarkingMadRead @willaful yes, it‘s from the movie! I have to watch it one of these days 3w
rubyslippersreads @BarkingMadRead The Hitchcock movie is wonderful. Just avoid the Armie Hammer version. 😂 3w
BarkingMadRead @rubyslippersreads 🤣 I just used an Armie pic for today‘s chapter 🤣 he is yummy. But I will avoid that version, thanks for the heads up! 3w
rubyslippersreads @BarkingMadRead Doesn‘t Armie actually find other people yummy? 🤣 3w
Roary47 Not reading these yet. Can you add me? I‘ve had this one on my list to read. 🥰💛 3w
Roary47 I also found it interesting that we learn a little of our narrator by the contrast like @TheAromaofBooks mentioned. 3w
ElizaMarie I want tea! (Ha!) So I am late to the comments, catching up today. But I kinda like being late, so I can read everything people have already said! 3w

Ruthiella Very short but not too bad for a dream sequence. I‘m a little nervous about Jasper the dog. I don‘t remember him. 😬 4w
Crinoline_Laphroaig Such a great opening line. 4w
BarkingMadRead @Ruthiella I don‘t remember! 🤞🏻🤞🏻🤞🏻 @Crinoline_Laphroaig I love it! @TheBookHippie oh nooooo 4w
willaful @Ruthiella I don't remember either but according to this spoiler website. it's okay. (Click at your own risk!) https://www.doesthedogdie.com/media/20561?index1=-1&index2=-1 4w
TheBookHippie @BarkingMadRead library has it just need to get it to my branch so I should be able to catch up. Supposed to be in by Friday 😅 4w
IndoorDame Apparently Manderley is based on a house she saw and fell in love with called Menabilly (you can find stunning photos online) and according to what I‘ve read the dream in this chapter could just as easily foreshadow her actual journey with the house, all of which happened after she wrote and published the book. 4w
Clare-Dragonfly This is gorgeously written! I haven‘t read this before so it‘s all new to me, and I‘m glad to be finally reading it. 4w
Ruthiella @Clare-Dragonfly Awesome you are reading it for the first time! It‘s a great plot. 4w
Ruthiella @willaful Thank you! 😊 4w
Bookwormjillk Woohoo new book! I only have the audio version in my library so I‘m reading it that way. 4w
dabbe @IndoorDame I read too that she was given a lease by the owner at the time, spent money renovating it, and lived there for 20 years before giving it back to the family. I never knew this, and the last time I read it was in the early 1990s before the Internet. Thank goodness for instant knowledge! 🤩 4w
dabbe The passage where the narrator talks about the wind coming from the western sea reminded me of Cornwall and the island off of it that is prevalent in AND THEN THERE WERE NONE ... and also P.B. Shelley's “Ode to the West Wind.“ Oh, what a tremendous novel embracing Gothic and Romantic literature from the early 1800s. I'm in heaven! #byebyebadbros 🤩 4w
5feet.of.fury Add me please 😊 4w
TheAromaofBooks LOVE how atmospheric this chapter is!! 4w
IndoorDame @dabbe couldn‘t agree more on both counts! #hailtheinternet #byebyebadbros 4w
KAO I am excited to start something new! Optimistic here! 4w
dabbe @IndoorDame 💚🩷💚 4w
peanutnine This is my first time reading and I'm loving the descriptions so far! 3w
Roary47 @Clare-Dragonfly I completely agree it is so beautiful already! I‘m also a first time reader with you and @peanutnine it will be fun reading with all of you. 🥰💛 3w
julieclair Please add me! I was too intimidated to attempt the bros, but now I'm back in the brigade! 3w
julieclair @IndoorDame Thanks for this great info about Menabilly! My husband and I will be touring Cornwall next month. I wonder if it's visible from the road? 3w
IndoorDame @julieclair oooh, definitely let us know if it is!!! 3w

#Treasure (BM)

My choice is a bit out there, but ... the lyrics state “I know that you don't know it
but you're fine“--just like the narrator thinks of herself in REBECCA. And Maxim de Winter finally tells her “Treasure, that is what you are; honey, you're my golden star,“ in so many words. So, hence my choice. 😍

TheBookgeekFrau Nice!! I'm just sitting wondering if I'm going to be able to come up with something for this prompt 🤷🏻‍♀️ 10mo

Mehso-so

It had an extremely slow start and the slow pace carried through the book. The novel has a lovely writing style with lush long descriptions and an intriguing plot told by an unnamed narrator. I loved the suspense and mystery, though a main thing was predictable, the reasoning and events weren't. I really enjoyed the way this novel played out, though at times I found all characters to be unlikeable, it was a good story with a sudden dramatic ending

I am super excited about these #roll100 choices! I almost picked up Rebecca last week, and the other two print choices are very tempting, too. 😎 Fear and Loathing would tick the box of classics I‘m trying to read. Looking forward to March! Plus it‘s my birthday month. 🎉🥳

BarbaraBB Fear and Loathing… how I hated that book. Hope you‘ll think different if you decide to read it. Rebecca of course is a no brainer ❤️. Is it a reread? 1y
Megabooks @BarbaraBB no Rebecca isn‘t. Somehow I‘ve missed out! I‘m super curious about what I will think of both classics! 1y

Well that was GREAT! Eerie is the best word for it; I feel like I've felt so many emotions reading this, especially because of all the twists that I just wasn't expecting! I'm still on the edge of my seat and I've finished it, crikey

I was so invested in the heroine too and I loved how it got me thinking about themes like perception, time etc

Yesterday's A For H was to get moving (ideally outdoors) - I've been doing loads of Blogilates/Yoga, so I thought I'd go on a walk too - here's a blurry photo from that😂 Today's is to thank people I'm grateful for - thank you to all of you on here for being gems!💎

I'm getting through Rebecca more slowly than I'd like so tonight I want to get to at least p100!

Blogilates was SO much fun today!! And I'm excited for the 'Nourish' yoga session later😊 Today's Action for Happiness was to say positive things to the people I meet & my conversations have been filled with loveliness which has been nice😁 Rebecca is quite different to the books I've read recently so it took a bit to get my eye in - I'm now really enjoying it though!

I've worked out and read more of Rebecca (aiming for page 50 today)! Later I plan on a yoga session & today's Action for Happiness is to take 5 min to sit still and just breathe which I'll do afterwards😊

Saying goodbye to Rebecca as we end June. It sounds like list everyone liked this one.

What are your final thoughts?

#thatsclassic

Jess I‘m still amazed at the unnamed narrator‘s actions and reactions in this book. I can‘t stop thinking about it. I think I spent the majority of the book shaking my head. Loved it though. 3y
sharread I thought about that too, the no name narrator but she did have a name the Mrs......I forgot their last name of her husband Max. But I overall loved the novel, I couldn't put it down, I kept plugging along trying to figure out where Rebecca really was. I thought Max did seem controlling with the Mrs. I was shocked too that the Mrs. seemed relieved Max killed Rebecca. Maybe that was my feelings. 👍🤪❤ 3y
