#BookerLonglist #5

Very elegantly written, I became engaged in the book immediately I enjoyed following the narrator‘s struggle to live in NYC while she‘s still strongly rooted in the Albania she left behind. Het empathy for other refugees jeopardizes her mental wellbeing as well as her closest relationships. She moves between this empathy and self-preservation and there seems no closure. An impressive read.

sarahbarnes Ah I see you liked it! 1d
BarbaraBB @sarahbarnes Yes! I did! And I think you will too but reviews are very mixed so I am not sure. And if you have a lot other unread books to read, I wouldn‘t put this one on top! 1d
GatheringBooks Love it! Albania! Nice. 🥰 1d

squirrelbrain Glad you liked it! 24h
Graywacke I liked this one a great too. Nice to see this! 24h
LeeRHarry Good to hear you liked it. This is one of two on the longlist I have on my shelves. I think what initially drew me to this one was the theme of immigration and that sense of where do you call home. 20h

Catching up on reviews! #BookerLonglist edition

While this one has some pacing issues, I'm glad I stuck with it to discover its many, murky layers. A story of family disconnection and buried trauma, I appreciated the thematic ideas of a flashlight's focused beam obscuring more than it illuminates, and how difficult it can be to see the full picture of those closest to us.

Cont'd in comments...

TheKidUpstairs Despite the aforementioned pacing issues, the themes, scope, depth, and ambition of this novel would earn it a spot on my Shortlist. It's unlikely to make my best of the year, but I deeply appreciate what Choi had accomplished here. 2d
squirrelbrain Yes, my thoughts entirely. None of the Booker books will make my best of the year, but this is on my shortlist too. 2d

Yes! A #bookerlonglist title that I loved! It starts off focusing on three women in the Ukraine, a scientist trying desperately to save rare snails from extinction and two sisters taking part in tours that match foreign men with potential Ukrainian brides. As the three characters become entangled in a scheme Russia invades and everything changes. I don‘t want to spoil anything but this book has so much to say and is so smart and darkly funny.

Jas16 https://youtu.be/6UCZ6tJgIE4?si=2L0JdS1Pw_WBa__4 I really enjoyed this interview with the author but I am also glad I watched it after having finished the book 6d
Suet624 Thank you for the video. I hadn't seen it. I really, really liked this book. Once again, we are in agreement. :) 6d
BarbaraBB Looking forward to it. Great review 6d

#WeeklyForecast 36/25

I am reading a short Japanese novel (Someone to Watch Over You) ad then am ready for another #Bookerlonglist book, the tagged. I also want to read the new Sarah Moss, that I bought because of @TrishB ‘s review.

squirrelbrain I loved Ripeness too! ❤️ 7d
BarbaraBB @squirrelbrain I must have missed your review. But now I‘m sure I‘ll love it too 7d
quietlycuriouskate Ooh, a new Sarah Moss! 😍 7d

A Chinese family in Malaysia spends the summer at their small family farm. There is a lot of tension about the farm and within the family. Amidst all of this two teenage boys forge a relationship. This is one of my favorites from the #bookerlonglist so far but the fact that it is the first in a four part series makes sense to me because it felt like it was building towards something that it never became.

Mehso-so

Overall I enjoyed spending an evening with this book, but it did feel rather unresolved. It's hard to discuss this book without giving spoilers, so suffice to say that I enjoyed what I thought was a mildly satirical piece full of stereotypes, but from there it moved on to a sequence of unlikeable characters and several truths about the media that are no revelation. I'm not entirely sure what the author wanted me to take away from this story.

I think I might want to see how this saga about an ethnic Chinese family in Malaysia continues in the next book, but I'll be avoiding the audiobook. I kept zoning out during some landscape description and then realising I didn't know whose POV the narrator had switched to. He read everyone the same way, and occasionally there's a 1st person comment from the future self of the teenage son who is otherwise in 3rd person like the others. ⤵️

Leniverse It was difficult to keep track, and I found I didn't always care. I did like the contrasts and cultural tensions between generations and between city and country people, women and the patriarchal traditions, and between the Chinese immigrants and the Muslim Malay population, something I imagine will be developed further in the subsequent books. It might have been a soft pick if I had a visual text version. #Booker #BookerLonglist 1w
charl08 It's a series? How did I miss that? 🙄 1w
Leniverse @charl08 Yes, it's meant to be a quartet. I'm not sure which direction of the compass will be next, but I figure it will follow the son in the family through different stages of his life and different areas. So teenage visit to the countryside of the south. Next book maybe metropolitan area for university? I'm just guessing. 1w
charl08 @Leniverse that's so interesting! Thank you. 1w
squirrelbrain Yes, I agree with you - I struggled with understanding the POV on the audio but get the feeling it would work better in print. 1w

I wasn't sure about the first part of this book, but the second won me over with the sheer creepy discomfort I felt when I read it. I think I might have to let it percolate for a few days before I decide exactly how I feel about it, but it was really cleverly done and a good choice by the #Booker judges. I suspect this might make my personal shortlist.

I went into this book about a Trinidadian woman who gave up her daughter for adoption when she was 16 expecting to really like it, even with all the middling reviews. But instead, after a solid opening, I found the book tedious. Not sure how this made the #bookerlonglist

squirrelbrain I agree - poorly written. 2w

Aaand…. I‘ve finished the #bookerlonglist!

Above is my list, in approximate order. I‘m disappointed that, while I enjoyed a lot of these, none will make my best of the year as I‘d always hope to find 1 or 2 absolute gems on a prize list.

The first 4 were all at the same level, but I just don‘t think the Markovits is a Booker book. Oddly, I‘d substitute in Misinterpretation, despite it being lower down the list than others. ⬇️

squirrelbrain I admire it a lot more than The South, The Land In Winter and One Boat. I enjoyed all 3 of those but they were all rather ‘plain‘, not daring or different, whereas Misinterpretation certainly was, even if I felt the author didn‘t nail the ending. 2w
AmyG Wow! Congrats! 2w
BarbaraBB Congrats on finishing so fast! However, it doesn‘t sound like the best experience. I‘ve read only a few and so far, agree with you. Nothing stand out yet but I have a lot more reading to do! 2w

Jas16 Woah! Well done. I am still slowly making my way through but given how lackluster everyone seems to be finding the majority of the list I wish I had waited for the short list. (edited) 2w
ChaoticMissAdventures Wow great job! Sorry it is a bit of a disappointment year. I still haven't cracked any open but I am interested in a couple of them. Seascraper for sure. 2w
charl08 Really interesting to hear. I think I'll probably only get to five or six before the shortlist is announced (depending on the library books that turn up). 2w
Chelsea.Poole Nicely done! I am looking forward to Seascraper, for sure! My next up will be Flashlight and Endling, so I'm happy to see they're on the top of your list. 2w
Tamra I haven‘t felt compelled to read any of them. 😒 Thank you for sharing your thoughts - it helps me decide whether I should read any of them. (edited) 2w
Amiable Nice work! 2w
ImperfectCJ I am impressed! I have three of them arriving in the mail today and several I'm nearing on the library holds list, so hopefully I'll have a few more finished soon (only two done so far). 2w
Ruthiella Amazing! 👏👏👏 Glad to see Endlings and Flashlight fairly high. Those are the two that interest me the most. 2w
Leniverse Well done! I have holds on almost everything, but I can't say that I'm feeling too impatient to get to most of them. I just started The South, and I think it might be one of those books that there's nothing wrong with but it just doesn't grab my interest. You know? I'll give it a bit longer though. 2w
Graywacke Congrats on finishing. I‘m having a good Booker experience, but then i‘m also in deep love with Audition. I‘m on book 8 right now 2w
Lesliereadsalot Way to go! Sorry this group wasn‘t better! 2w
JamieArc I‘m impressed! I‘m not as eager to read them this year but I‘m following posts and will be reading a few soon. 2w
squirrelbrain @ChaoticMissAdventures - Seascraper is one I‘d recommend for sure! 2w
squirrelbrain I hope you enjoy those that you read! @charl08 @ImperfectCJ 2w
squirrelbrain @Chelsea.Poole @ruthiella - those two are definitely worth the read - I look forward to hearing your thoughts. 2w
squirrelbrain @Graywacke - it‘s not that I had a bad experience, just not a stellar one! But you‘ve liked the books that I didn‘t, so hopefully your experience will continue to be great! 2w
TheKidUpstairs Congrats on finishing the list! I've rather enjoyed my Booker reading this year, but have been pretty selective with what I'm reading from the list. I seem to be the only one who loved The South, it really struck a chord with me. I would also put Flashlight and Endling on my short list, both multi layered and impressive reads. I'm not going to be a completist this year, but I've got a hold on the Desai and I've got Seascraper pre-ordered. 1w
squirrelbrain @TheKidUpstairs - I think you‘ll really enjoy the Desai and Seascraper. I think I‘d probably have loved South if I‘d have read it in print. 🤷‍♀️ 1w
JenP Congrats on finishing the list! My order so far is pretty different from yours but nice to see all your reviews 1w
squirrelbrain I can see that your order so far is quite different @JenP but that‘s the beauty of the Booker - it‘s never easy or predictable! 1w
