A successful art dealer confesses the story of his meteoric rise in this sleek, swift, and graceful novel with unexpectedly sharp teeth (Lauren Groff, New York Times bestselling author). In a first-class lounge at JFK airport, our narrator listens as Jeff Cook, a former classmate he only vaguely remembers, shares the uncanny story of his adult lifea life that changed course years before, the moment he resuscitated a drowning man. Jeff reveals that after that traumatic, galvanizing morning on the beach, he was compelled to learn more about the man whose life he had saved, convinced that their fates were now entwined. But are we agents of our fateor are we its pawns? Upon discovering that the man is renowned art dealer Francis Arsenault, Jeff begins to surreptitiously visit his Beverly Hills gallery. Although Francis does not seem to recognize him as the man who saved his life, he nevertheless casts his legendary eye on Jeff and sees something worthy. He takes the younger man under his wing, initiating him into his world, where knowledge, taste, and access are currency; a world where value is constantly shifting and calling into question what is real, and what matters. The paths of the two men come together and diverge in dizzying ways until the novels staggering ending. Sly, suspenseful, and engrossing, Mouth to Mouth masterfully blurs the line between opportunity and exploitation, self-respect and self-delusion, fact and fictionexposing the myriad ways we deceive each other, and ourselves.

Two college acquaintances run into each other at an airport, and one decides to tell the other of how he saved a man‘s life. This reminded me of Patricia Highsmith‘s books and Alfred Hitchcock‘s films. The writing is excellent, and the characters are well-developed. I loved it!

Picked up this quick read after seeing fellow Litten discussing it. Two university acquaintances meet unexpectedly in an airport after 20 years where on divulges a story about their life to the other. I don‘t want to give a lot away but there are interesting things to ponder here about what is owed when saving a life, who is “good” and who isn‘t and it‘s got one of those ahhhh endings.

Interesting… this short and strange story, which covers one conversation between 2 people at an airport during a delay, is hard to evaluate. It went quickly because it was only 170 pages. Did I like it? Not really, per se, but it held my interest. Did I expect it to go somewhere more impactful? Yes. Overall it was memorable for its weirdness.

“The timing was good, the chemistry was there, this book treated me well. That‘s my choice.” And thus today‘s judge in the #ToB23 chose Mouth to Mouth over The Passenger. Just like us.
Its success in this round in the #LitsyToB33 is mainly due to the fact that many people didn‘t read or bailed on The Passenger. It was voted for by @Megabooks, @jlhammar @Cariashley, @Readerann, @Larkken and @Ruthiella but it wasn‘t enough. Mouth to Mouth it is!

Suet624 Phew. I‘m glad. 2y
jlhammar Well, as the Kid might say, Adios, Alice! Sad to see The Passenger knocked-out, but not surprised. When I was anticipating this match, I was struck by how masculine both books were. That is not really a selling point for me so I felt for the judge and appreciated her honesty (even though I‘d have advanced McCarthy). I‘m loving the pet mascots! Great addition ToB! 2y
batsy I'm shocked. The Passenger is miles ahead of Mouth to Mouth (in my very humble opinion, lol). I should have voted for ours 😆 2y
See All 24 Comments
sarahbarnes I‘ll admit I didn‘t read the McCarthy, but I did quite enjoy Mouth to Mouth so happy to see it moving forward! 2y
Ruthiella A different judge would have given a different response! You can never predict the TOB! 🐓 I don‘t think I‘d have ever picked up either book, we‘re it not for this competition, and I‘m glad to have read them. (edited) 2y
RebelReader I‘m happy with this result! I loved Mouth to Mouth! 2y
Jas16 It is the choice I would have made (I was one of those who bailed on the Passenger) but I was surprised by this outcome. 2y
BarbaraBB @batsy You should have 😄😄 2y
BarbaraBB I am kind of glad too with this outcome. I loved Mouth when I read it and the concept of it but to be honest it didn‘t linger as long as I expected it to. However, I couldn‘t do The Passenger- may try again! 2y
BarbaraBB @jlhammar You‘re right about the masculinity of this book. I appreciate the approach of the judge ! 2y
Cinfhen I totally agree @batsy @Ruthiella @Jas16 I didn‘t make it through the Passenger but I felt like Mouth to Mouth was just an ok book. I had read it prior to the tournament announcement and I wasn‘t very impressed. Fun to see how things will play out in both tournaments. 2y
Deblovestoread I didn‘t read The Passenger and after reading the judge‘s comments I am pretty sure it is not a book for me. Mouth to Mouth was an ok read. 2y
Larkken @jlhammar masculine = 💯 agree! Maybe this is why, although I enjoyed Mouth to Mouth, and thought it was v clever &etc, I didn‘t fully connect with it and only gave it 3-ish stars. I enjoyed the language more in the passenger, so that‘s why I voted for it - though I found my brain pinging away from the page altogether too often, as I am wont to do with McCarthy…😅 2y
Chelsea.Poole @jlhammar oh yeah, Mouth to Mouth is “masculine” as well, now that you mention it! You‘re much more eloquent than I am with my “manly” descriptor for Passenger lol. I didn‘t hate the McCarthy, but I felt like I didn‘t get as much from it as I was supposed to. I‘d probably have it enjoyed it if I had a professor educating me along the way. 2y
Hooked_on_books I‘m not at all surprised this is the way we went and I‘m glad the official tob agrees with us. I found moments of the Passenger absorbing, but as a book I wasn‘t a fan. So, I‘m glad to see MtM advance. 2y
Readerann Full disclosure: I didn‘t read either book, but I did read reviews, etc. My vote was based on the one I suspected I would dislike the least. 😆 2y
Hooked_on_books I finished reading the judgment and commentary and would agree with the commentators that the judge didn‘t seem to love either book. I wonder if we‘re going to see a lot of that with our own feelings about the shortlist being lackluster this year. 2y
BkClubCare @Readerann - it counts! 😁 2y
BkClubCare @BarbaraBB - both, definitely, very masculine-presenting 2y
BkClubCare Somehow, I think, I was surprised by this. Probably the weight and prestige of the Cormac-McCarthyness, and length/weight. The Passenger had a pie mention 👏 but I had a more fun reading experience with MtM. I probably liked The Passenger more, but it felt grudgingly so. Weird. And I am super annoyed that the plane crash never gets explained. 2y
merelybookish I voted for Mouth to Mouth. It had limited appeal but I cannot even pretend I ever was going to or ever will read The Passenger. 2y
kwmg40 I liked Mouth and am happy it is moving on in both tournaments. I started Passenger and like it so far, but the comments about the lack of resolution make me less motivated to continue. 2y
BarbaraBB @Hooked_on_books I noticed that too, that the judge didn‘t seem to love either. It is very well possible we‘ll see that again this TOB I think 2y

Still working through what I thought about this one. I definitely liked the writing/language - kept me fully engaged (in conjunction with great audio narration). Nobody was likable to me, but that‘s not something I care much about. I didn‘t necessarily find it super suspenseful or twisty, but had I not been kind of expecting that (based on some reviews), I don‘t think I would have considered that an issue. So I guess I liked it! 🤣

Hmmm, kind of torn on this one so I‘ll round up to a pick. I didn‘t find it particularly shocking or twisty and I don‘t really care about the world of the rich, famous and ambitious. Jeff struck me as having no personality (by design, I‘m sure). I did appreciate its brevity though and the many questions it leaves you with. Could definitely see this being a good one for discussion so it will be fun to see what the #ToB23 judges make of it.

KT1432 I meant to read this while traveling on some long flights internationally last month but didn‘t get to it. Curious what I‘ll think of it, but I have a feeling it will be at least a bit sentimental to me as it‘s my last Literati book I got before they ended their adult book club. 2y

Maybe I've read one too many thrillers, but I saw the ending (twist?) coming, just now the how of it. I'm surprised by my reaction; I've seen only good reviews by readers & in the media, but this left me cold. It says something about careerism, male-centric success, & the way money transforms a person once you get a taste of it. But there's Muriel Spark's Loitering with Intent that did megalomania, narcissism & deceptiveness way better. #ToB2023

batsy I thought the writing was sharp & perceptive at times, & I'm not against trying another book by the writer. I probably would have found this book just okay, but the hype led me to expect something quite innovative & surprising, but it was neither imo. 2y

Ruthiella Excited now to try the referenced Spark title. Thanks for the tip! 2y
batsy @BarbaraBB Yes, I can imagine going into it without knowing anything will probably be different. 2y
batsy @jlhammar Look forward to your thoughts! It might be a better experience on audio actually. The narrative is conversational and propulsive. 2y
batsy @Ruthiella My pleasure! It's a farce but with that Sparkian wit. 2y
kwmg40 I liked the book more than you did, but that ending didn't surprise me either. 2y
batsy @kwmg40 Yes, it felt like it was headed in that direction! 2y
Lindy All of the characters are unpleasant, but I enjoyed this novel. One of the things I loved is its critique of the art world, of art as commodity. How we shape narratives about our lives is another aspect I found interesting. 2y
batsy @Lindy I don't mind unpleasant characters at all; a lot of my fave books are about unlikeable people 🙂 I think I'm perennially online so a lot of the art world critique is something I'm familiar with, but I agree that it does show something interesting about how narratives are shaped. That's probably the most intriguing element about the twist. I also liked how perceptive and sharp the writing was, at times. Would be keen to read another by him. 2y
Lindy @batsy 😊👍 2y
sarahbarnes Great review. I did like this one, and there was something about the coldness and narcissism and how it made my skin crawl that made me enjoy it I think. 2y
sarahbarnes And, I now want to read Loitering with Intent after you mentioned it above. 2y
batsy Thank you! I do feel bad with this and also The Book of Goose, the latter that I was especially looking forward to! I feel like I missed out on something but I'm glad you liked this one! I definitely recommend the Spark 🙂 2y

Ok so the blurb of this book is chilling - but that‘s where the chills end until we read the very last line of the novel. The book revolves around the premise that a man saves another man from a near death scenario and then becomes obsessed with the life of the man he saved - only to wonder whether he was worth saving at all. But the book falls way short of the build-up and is mostly descriptions about the art world. Overall it‘s a time-pass read.

The plot seems simple enough: a man recounts some episodes in his life to another over drinks in an airport lounge. However, there are more layers to this story than is immediately apparent.

Two former college acquaintances meet up in an airport years later. While they wait for their delayed flight, one shares the story of saving another man's life and how it shaped his destiny. There's the story, and then what lies beneath the story. That tension was intriguing to a degree, but like Alice Munro who I love to (mis)quote, a good story needs a female character. And so, this tale of male ambition & ego inevitably left me a bit cold. #tob

Intending to just read a few chapters this morning, I ended up reading the entire thing. It's that kind of book.

A man runs into an old college acquaintance and invites them to join him in the lounge as they wait for their delayed flight. There, he tells the story of the life he saved and what happened next. There's nothing superfluous in this tightly-told story.

BarbaraBB In the beginning I was a bit disappointed but further on I really dogged this one. It reminded me a bit of Patricia Highsmith. 2y

I can't really say why I enjoyed this novel. It's straightforward but subtle, meta, with a couple of layers of narrators that the reader has to decide whether to trust or not. It also has a bit of a modern fairy tale feel with an ending that's easy to predict given the setup, but which leads the reader back to the trustworthiness of narrators, character motivations, etc. The idea of crafting a truth by telling part of a story runs throughout.

ImperfectCJ I enjoy knowing as little as possible about books before I start reading them, so it wasn't until after I posted my review that I started reading the reviews and comments for this one on Litsy. I'm loving the conversation and insights! This is a fun one to unpack. It seems straightforward but then you start picking at the layers and there's so much mystery there. (edited) 2y

I feel bad for giving this a so-so but I was mostly bored reading it. It‘s old-fashioned in its framing: a story of a story in a story; a man confesses to an acquaintance about how he saved another man‘s life, which set him on a path of success… but was this fate or design? I think it would have been sharper/more powerful for me if it had been pared down even more to short story length. But I am enjoying its ambiguity and the discussion! #ToB2023

When this book wasn't mysteriously causing me to fall asleep, I was flipping the pages to find out how this story would evolve. A short novel, it tells the story of someone who has saved a drowning man & the ensuing interactions he has with this man. Once I finished reading, I spent time thinking about quite a few of the twists and turns involved in the story. I appreciate books like this that cause you to rethink what you've just read. #TOB23

Ruthiella Some how the twist at the end fell a little flat for me. But I am still pondering it! 2y
BarbaraBB Great review. This is what I appreciated so much about the novel as well 2y
Suet624 @Ruthiella It wasn't just the ending. I keep wondering about various aspects of the life of the saved man as well, i.e. how long did he know who Jeff was? Why didn't he tell folks he had drowned? Did he not want to be beholden to someone for his survival? (edited) 2y

Ruthiella I‘m thinking what if the whole thing is a lie? What if Jeff did target him with the intention of somehow worming his way into his life? And has made up the rescue to assuage his guilt for killing him (by accident?). 2y
Hooked_on_books I love when an author gives you just enough to think. So much is left unsaid in this book in a good way. And the structure is so interesting. It‘s a great book club book, I think. 2y

I really liked this (shortish) book, as an author bumps into an old college friend, Jeff, in JFK airport. Jeff tells him a tale from his youth that he‘s never told anyone before.

I liked the slight changes in narrative voice from first (the author) to third person; it leant the story a more mysterious, unreliable narrator, air.

I listened to this and think it suits audio really well: you feel like you‘re there in the airport lounge with them.

Megabooks Agreed this was great on audio. Interesting insight about first vs third person shifts! 2y

Ruthiella I never doubted the narrator‘s veracity…I wonder why not? Because that really does change the tone. 2y
Hooked_on_books I liked this, too. I thought it was so interesting that the first person narrator was telling us someone else‘s story. Really interesting construction. 2y
Larkken I‘m audiobooking this one right now, too, and it is a quiet, thoughtful read. It brings up interesting questions on fate and culpability… I like y‘all‘s point about what the 1st-3rd person shift does for the reliability of the narrator! And I already trust that the one narrator was deliberately making himself look good 👀 2y

So glad I #reread this #ToB choice, and it‘s definitely still one of my favorites!

A writer runs into an old college friend at an airport. The friend shares the wild tale of his life since saving a man from drowning. The friend‘s curiosity about who he saved drew him deeper into that man‘s life and family, changing them both forever.

Suet624 Reading this one right now. 2y
Ruthiella I didn‘t love this one. I think for me, it would have worked better if it had been a short story. The framing device was unnecessary, I felt. But I can see it‘s appeal. It is mystery that the reader is consciously or unconsciously trying to figure out the whole time. 2y
BarbaraBB At first I didn‘t care for the framing device either, not getting the necessity of the in between narrator. Later on I realized the mouth to mouth effect of retelling someone else‘s story did add to the mystery and the reliability of those involved. I found it very clever! @Ruthiella 2y

Ruthiella @BarbaraBB Ooh! That is an interesting way to look at it! 🤔 2y
BarbaraBB @Ruthiella I‘m not sure but I was thinking about the meaning of the title beside the obvious literal one 🤷🏻‍♀️ 2y
squirrelbrain I just finished this one about 5 minutes ago! I‘m glad it was a good second listen for you. 2y
Aimeesue I liked this one a lot, and I think @BarbaraBB is right, it's a play on CPR + retelling stories, including the narrator's retelling, yes? Maybe I'm thinking this way because I'm almost done with Diaz's TRUST, which is all over the place in terms of reliability 😋 2y
BarbaraBB @Aimeesue I love these kind of books! Including 2y
Cinfhen I love that you brought the title into the picture @BarbaraBB I NEVER considered that aspect ! I wasn‘t wild about this book but it did keep me engaged and I appreciated the sparse page count @Ruthiella but I don‘t think this deserved a shortlist spot🤷🏼‍♀️ 2y
Megabooks @Suet624 interested to read your thoughts! 2y
Megabooks @Ruthiella @BarbaraBB I hadn‘t thought about that either, Barbara, but it‘s brilliant! Plus there‘s something intriguing about how true each man‘s account is. Kind of like Everett did with telephone. What gets lost or added when you pass information mouth to mouth? (edited) 2y
Megabooks @squirrelbrain ooo…what did you think? Excited for your review! 2y
Megabooks @Aimeesue sorry I didn‘t tag you in what I said above to @BarbaraBB and @Ruthiella but I love unreliability in narrators, and I think trust is another great example from the longlist. 2y
squirrelbrain I really liked it - just posted my review! 2y
BarbaraBB @Ruthiella @Aimeesue @Megabooks O yes, Telephone was so good too! I often enjoy books with unreliable narrators. 2y
Aimeesue @Megabooks @Ruthiella @BarbaraBB No worries! Strangely enough, Telephone came in to the Book Sorting this week and I snapped it up, not even knowing what it was about. I'd read The Trees recently, so was eager to read more Everett. I love me some unreliable narrators! (edited) 2y

Thanks to @BarbaraBB and @Megabooks for encouraging me to finish. I think I would have spent sometime time wondering had I not finished. It is a soft pick for me. Well written and short, I‘m not sorry I read it but won‘t be shouting from the mountain tops about it. Maybe audio would have been better.

#TOB23. I think Dinosaurs is next up on audio

@Cinfhen

Ruthiella Yeah. I haven‘t posted my review yet, but for me it was just so-so. Different strokes! 2y

Great mantra while in an airport: stop thinking and be the cargo.

Dilara So true, but also so depressing! 😐 (edited) 2y
batsy Yes, so true and bleak. It makes me think of hospitals, too. You have to become a specimen & ideally erase the questioning human part of yourself. 2y
Suet624 @Dilara @batsy The only way I make it through an airport experience is to make up stories about the other people I see - try to imagine their backstory. Hospitals are a whole other thing. 2y

Reggie @Suet624 when I worked graveyard that‘s how a coworker and I would get through our shift. By making up backstories of customers we saw. 2y
Suet624 @Reggie in thinking about it I tend to lean toward creating sad backstories. I think I need to work on that. 2y
Reggie @Suet624 there would be angry looking couples and we would say that coming to the casino was their last chance that she‘s upset they can‘t have kids but that she crossed her legs towards him and not away from him said she still loved him they just didn‘t know how to move forward and all kinds of crazy things. Lolol none of our stories were happy either. 2y

I did read this book and thought it was ok - I didn‘t love it as much as @BarbaraBB @Megabooks and some of the others but there‘s a certain satisfaction when you get to the last page @Ruthiella @squirrelbrain - it‘s a short enough book that if you‘re already half in, Deb keep going 🙌🏻 2y

Read for #ToB2023
Jeff saves a man‘s life on the beach. He‘s a stranger at the time, but Jeff soon learns who the man is, Francis, a wealthy art dealer, though Francis seems not to remember Jeff. He soon becomes involved in his life and tells this never-before-told story to a college acquaintance in an airport lounge. Intriguing, for sure! I found this one to be good, not great, but it certainly has something to say about ambition.

squirrelbrain I think I might listen to this one next, on audio. 2y

This is an interesting book with a first person POV in which the narrator is telling someone else‘s story, serving as a proxy for the reader and pulling us closer to the narrative. The entire story is interesting, with some questionable decisions by the speaker, and closes with a bang that upends everything. I found this really thought-provoking. #toblonglist2023

Cinfhen I read this book in August and I honestly don‘t remember the ending 🙄 2y
Hooked_on_books @Cinfhen In the very last sentence, he reveals that Francis didn‘t die of a heart attack on the ski slope but of injuries sustained from running into another skier. Which makes me wonder how much Jeff fabricated in the story he told. It really casts the entire narrative in a different light. 2y

Patricia Highsmith could have written this literary thriller, which reads like a morality play told by an unreliable narrator and that raises questions that will linger with me for a while.

A struggling writer runs into former classmate Jeff. While waiting for their delayed flight, Jeff tells how he years ago brought a drowned man back to life. Afterwards he finds out that this is Francis Arsenault, a famous art dealer. ⬇️⬇️

9-11 Oct 22 (audiobook)
Obama recommendation.
Listening to this reminded me of The Reluctant Fundamentalist. Odd, because I barely remember it and am not sure they had much in common. Maybe the form - the narrator recalls a story he is told by a past acquaintance whilst sitting in an airport lounge waiting for their flight to be rescheduled.
I enjoyed the small twist and turns in the rags to riches plot; and the idea of history repeating itself.

Not entirely sure I liked the construct of this novel. The narrator runs into a college acquaintance at an airport and proceeds to hear his life story, including a rise to fortune amidst some ethically questionable decisions. More of a morality play than a novel really? The narrator served little function. This could have been a short story.

25/22 This felt like a true holiday read. Immersive but not to deep. It had a very distinct atmosphere, like a holiday friendship. I enjoyed it. The ending was ok, not great. It left me with no real satisfaction, but then that probably suited this book. If you are looking for something a little mysterious which isn‘t heavy but isn‘t silly pick this up. 3⭐️
