This graphic novel anthology brings to light the stories of Canadian Indigenous Peoples and their history of colonial resistance. As someone not as familiar with Canadian history, I appreciated the introductions and timelines before each story. These were all compellingly told with varied art styles represented. Overall, a vibrant, informative, and powerful collection.

“So, this is how the channel was formed. It‘s…very beautiful.
We have a story for everything. In the end, they all mean one thing.
Life.”

I went into this book not knowing exactly what to expect. I‘m at the halfway point and I have to say Midge‘s voice is powerful. Almost all of the pieces in here have made me think about privilege, but I must say this one has given me pause. I‘m reflecting on how the reclamation of words isn‘t meaningful to all people in the same way and what I think about that. I have never quite thought about this before in the same way.

RebL This is on my holds list! Glad to see the S-word go. But the P word? I hadn‘t thought of it. As an Oklahoman, I reject “Okie.” When people use it, I ask them, “How many teeth does an Okie have?” I‘m pretty sure they aren‘t thinking a full mouth. Also, by definition, you can‘t be an Okie & still live in Oklahoma. Anyway, I like books that push my thinking. Thanks for pulling this quote. 1y
psalva @RebL I‘m glad others have plans to read this. I think this book suffers from bad packaging actually. It is satire and cultural criticism- there is humor but in my opinion it is serious and biting, not jolly or silly to the extent the cover makes it seem. A lot of the pieces are short, one or two pages, but the longer pieces have a lot of nuance. I hadn‘t thought about “Okie” outside of John Steinbeck. Hmm… now you‘ve got me thinking too 1y

Murder on the Red River | Marcie R Rendon

Pickpick

This was stellar. Cash‘s character was extremely dynamic and her relationship with Wheaton pulled at my heartstrings. The last 20 pages were so suspenseful, and the ending left room for the sequels without being disappointing on its own. I have already put a hold on the next installment at the library.

This paragraph sums up Cash‘s character so well! Don‘t get me wrong. There‘s more to Cash- but I think this describes who she is at the core before she begins to be more invested in the murder. It‘s very good writing. Even if you view it as a little bit cliched, it‘s not because it‘s lazy, but because Cash‘s experience is sadly drawing on historically common occurrences among indigenous communities.

This Town Sleeps: A Novel | Dennis E. Staples

Mehso-so

For a debut novel, this has a lot going for it. Told from several points of view, this is a story of discovery. The main character Marion wakes up what seems to be the spirit of a dog which leads him to the grave of Kayden Kelliher who was murdered at the age of 17. ⬇️

#skoden #skodenreadathon

psalva Marion sets out to understand what has happened and, in the process, he uncovers his Ojibwe family history and his connection to the events of the past. Overall, this was decent. There is a gay love story- think 100 Boyfriends meets ancestral curse. It also deals with inter-generational trauma. There are some characters which lacked development and I think there are some confusing narrative choices. Nonetheless, I was intrigued throughout. 1y

The Way to Rainy Mountain | N. Scott Momaday
post image
Pickpick

Momaday frames the history and legends of the Kiowa people through the lens of his own pilgrimage, in honor of his grandmother, from Yellowstone to Rainy Mountain in Oklahoma. It‘s a moving book which examines the power of language and spoken word, deals with grief and loss, and ultimately is a preservation of story.
#skoden #skodenreadathon

psalva Because Momaday weaves his personal history and family interactions among the legends of his people, all of the tales gain more weight and life, each reflecting upon the other. It‘s a thing of beauty. 1y

Pickpick

This romance has the hopefulness and witty dialogue but it also squarely faces the racism, sexism, and xenophobia exposed when kids of color get major parts in the local theater production. #skoden
