The Way to Rainy Mountain
The Way to Rainy Mountain | N. Scott Momaday
8 posts | 8 read | 10 to read
First published in paperback by UNM Press in 1976, The Way to Rainy Mountain has sold over 200,000 copies. "The paperback edition of The Way to Rainy Mountain was first published twenty-five years ago. One should not be surprised, I suppose, that it has remained vital, and immediate, for that is the nature of story. And this is particularly true of the oral tradition, which exists in a dimension of timelessness. I was first told these stories by my father when I was a child. I do not know how long they had existed before I heard them. They seem to proceed from a place of origin as old as the earth. "The stories in The Way to Rainy Mountain are told in three voices. The first voice is the voice of my father, the ancestral voice, and the voice of the Kiowa oral tradition. The second is the voice of historical commentary. And the third is that of personal reminiscence, my own voice. There is a turning and returning of myth, history, and memoir throughout, a narrative wheel that is as sacred as language itself."--from the new Preface

Momaday frames the history and legends of the Kiowa people through the lens of his own pilgrimage, in honor of his grandmother, from Yellowstone to Rainy Mountain in Oklahoma. It‘s a moving book which examines the power of language and spoken word, deals with grief and loss, and ultimately is a preservation of story.

psalva Because Momaday weaves his personal history and family interactions among the legends of his people, all of the tales gain more weight and life, each reflecting upon the other. It‘s a thing of beauty. 2y

This was my April #DoubleSpin read, and it's such a quick but gorgeous book! The three voices (ancestral Kiowa voice, historical commentary voice, and Momaday's own voice) are interwoven so elegantly, and I'll definitely be revisiting this and adding Momaday's novel (tagged in the comments) to my TBR! Picked this book up in a bookshop in Santa Fe and I'm so glad I did. ❤️ @TheAromaofBooks

Good morning! It's 5:00 am here and I am awake & ready to read! Mostly. 😅🥱
1 Bay Area, California, USA.
2 Tagged, which I bought in Santa Fe last year.
3 Mandarin oranges.
4 I'm a 1st-year Master of Divinity student, so most of my reading will be for seminary!
5 I've done some readathons, but I don't know what I'd do differently. I'm just excited to read, hang out here, & maybe take a nap later. 😁😴 #deweysreadathon #readathon #24hourreadathon

Suet624 I‘m kind of jealous of your Master‘s study. 5y

"A single knoll rises out of the plain in Oklahoma, north and west of the Wichita Range. For my people, the Kiowas, it is an old landmark, and they gave it the name Rainy Mountain."

One of my favorite books of all time. I love the story of Devils Tower. Appropriately, I read this book aloud to my husband on a road trip to Devils Tower and the Black Hills last fall. One day I'll have to complete the pilgrimage. #jubilantjuly #Rain

It seems fitting that on this very rainy morning I'm reviewing for a class on Momaday's memoir, "The Way to Rainy Mountain" ?
