Pickpick

She has a little too much faith in the good of certain religious practices such as giving a child a “what would Jesus do” necklace or bracelet to help them be good. This is overly simplistic and has not been proven to make any child (neurotypical or neurospicy) “be good.”

GingerAntics A lot of neurospicy folks have been really damaged by religion in a way she was lucky to not experience, but she also doesn‘t acknowledge the history of abuse toward people like her that continues today. 1y
GingerAntics However, this is a wonderful look at one of the first autistic kids kept at home. She acknowledges that most kids like her during her childhood were locked away. She admits that she worries about ASD kids being automatically sent to special ed instead actually educated, which is a concern I share. 1y
GingerAntics She even mentions at one point that her mother wrote a book as well. I went and looked it up. I am intrigued to take that for a spin. It would be so interesting to hear about the same events from the outside. 1y
GingerAntics I loved her discussion of the scientific fact that if the genetic components of neurodivergence were “edited out” (a eugenics idea that is greatly supported by autism speaks), we would also edit out all of human creativity, ingenuity, and invention. It certainly makes sense that in a country with a school system designed to create factory worker yes-men, this would be an appealing idea. 1y
GingerAntics Too bad that means we would most certainly “edit out” all the people who actually want it edited out. This really ties well into the Devon Price book I read after this one. #TempleGrandin #ThinkingInPictures #audiobook #busbook #neurodivergent #autism #CreativeThinkers #eugenics #eugenicsruineverything (edited) 1y

This is really interesting. Apparently if eugenics were to win, and we “edited” out all of the people with depression, no-polar, schizophrenia, autism (like Autism Speaks wants to), ADHD, those with “bad breeding,” etc, we would literally edit out every artist, author, philosopher, creative in history. Those genes are what allow for human creativity, even with the risk that in some cases they will be a bit overactive.

GingerAntics The risk-reward assessment of these genes comes out in their favour every single time. We need them, and even for people who are debilitated by the overactivity of these genes, given the right environment and care, groundbreaking, mind blowing acts of creativity are possible. #TempleGrandin #ThinkingInPictures #audiobook #busbook #neurodivergent #autism #CreativeThinkers #eugenics #eugenicsruineverything (edited) 1y

Maybe it‘s just me, but this is just so elegant.

Admittedly, I know exactly zero about quantum physics, but this explanation is precise and specific. I love it.

GingerAntics @TheBookHippie you believe there is a divine. Is this it/part of it? 1y
TheBookHippie @GingerAntics Comes damn close, yes. 1y
GingerAntics @TheBookHippie this really spoke to me. I probably could have finished the book on the way home tonight, but I backed it up and listened to this part probably a dozen times. It just felt enough without being a concrete thing, like more than an expression of the divine, but not quite the divine itself. This is definitely not an idea of god based on humanity. 1y

TheBookHippie @GingerAntics I agree !!! Not based on humanity is key. 1y
julesG God/the Divine based on science/facts. I like the idea. 1y
julesG Comes close to what I think and believe in as an atheist. 1y
GingerAntics @julesG exactly! It‘s a balance that far more people can come together and unite with. It makes more sense and has much less of the nonsense. 1y
GingerAntics @TheBookHippie more and more, I see the different parts of humanity in the god I was raised with. It‘s really sad. It‘s not that man is made in god‘s image as they claim, but that god is made in man‘s image. Period. It‘s just sad how much folks are willing to give up and fight for a long con (possibly the longest con in history). 1y
GingerAntics @julesG no one is going to murder someone and claim “subatomic particles made me do it.” No one is going to beat or molest a child and claim it‘s the will of subatomic particles. The christian god is really a prick and a perv when you really think about it. 1y
julesG Hence I'm an atheist. No god, no devil/demon, just me and the subatomic particles. 1y
julesG But just imagine the bafflement of the persecution should someone state that they murdered a person because the subatomic particles made them do it. 1y
TheBookHippie @GingerAntics Men twisted God into a version they could use to control women. Period. White supremacy, nationalism and colonialism alllll were made with it in mind. Most religions outside Christianity initially stemmed from matriarchal control. The white men ego could not take it -therefore overtook it for power and control. Even nuns use to have freedom and control and live out on their own. They were too powerful thus convents .. 1y
GingerAntics @julesG 🤣😂🤣 that would make headline news around the world. The first people up in arms that that was the dumbest defence in the world… christians! 1y
julesG @TheBookHippie I said something similar baaaaaack when we discussed first humans settling/growing plants/raising livestock/husbandry in school, must have been year 7 (and that means I was 13 or 14). I got into huge trouble, not because of religion, but because my history teacher was absolutely certain humankind had never been matriarchal (reasoning that men have always been stronger than women and hence always ruled the world). 1y
GingerAntics @TheBookHippie gotta love those white men and their power trips! How is it so different from other men who have not been indoctrinated by the white men to not take issue with women in power? I don‘t get it. 1y
julesG I wasn't an easy student to teach. I had the weirdest questions. All based on the fact that I basically grew up in a small town library (my mother worked as a librarian there until I was 8 or 9 years old) and loved to read the encyclopaedia my parents had at home. 1y
julesG @GingerAntics It's not just white men though. It's men raised in patriarchal societies. 1y
TheBookHippie @julesG I spent my time in detention for arguing with teachers mostly… dress code violations the rest 🤣🤭😅👀🤷🏻‍♀️ same reasoning I was well read and they were lying. 1y
TheBookHippie @julesG yes patriarchal society 😵‍💫 1y
GingerAntics @julesG oh, I totally get that. It‘s just the white men that have the most power to screw everything up for everyone else. 1y
