This book of short stories (not all of them are about #Tonga) are particularly well written. But this opening sentence is definitely one of the best I‘ve ever read.

This slim book of short stories focuses on how outside pressures like development, religion, and more put stress on and encourage the alteration of island cultures. It‘s told with sly good humor. I read this slowly and think it might get a bit repetitive if read at a quicker pace.

#ReadingOceania2024 #PapuaNewGuinea

Librarybelle I see other reviews comment on the repetition. Good advice on reading slowly! 2mo

squirrelbrain Was it fiction or NF? How did it compare to We Are the Ocean? 2mo
Hooked_on_books @squirrelbrain We Are the Ocean is far better. This one is fiction and the last story, about the guy who is trying to do good work but hamstrung by what the aid organization wants to give him, is in both books. Several of the other stories have that same sly humor. 2mo
squirrelbrain Ah, yes, I recall that story! 😃 2mo

My first book for #readingoceania24 and it‘s a great one! I learned a lot about the people and culture of Oceanic islands.

My favourite quote: we are a ‘Sea of Islands rather than islands in a far sea‘.

I‘m using this for #tonga, and it would also work for #papuanewguinea or #fiji.

Thank you so much for sending it to me, Holly, and I enjoyed reading along with you. I‘m so lucky that you sent me two books that I would never otherwise have read.

BarbaraBB What a great kick-off! 3mo
Librarybelle Hooray!! 3mo
Hooked_on_books Hooray! I‘m glad you liked it! I give so much credit to Basically Books for stocking this book for me to find. I thought it was terrific, too. What a great way of looking at Oceania he had. 3mo

This book was a great find for #ReadingOceania2024, as anthropologist Hau‘ofa is steeped in Oceania. I particularly appreciated his way of looking at the region and the short fiction piece makes me want to read the book it came from. This one is best read one or two pieces at a time. #Tonga (would also work for Papua New Guinea, Fiji, or arguably any of the Oceania countries)

Librarybelle Love your photo…looks like gorgeous weather! 4mo
Hooked_on_books @Librarybelle Thanks! If I‘d taken it at any other time today, you would have seen pouring rain! The skies happened to clear and I took advantage. 4mo

#readingoceania24

I‘ve only just read the preface and the first essay, Holly, and I can already tell this is going to be a fascinating book.

I keep Googling and making notes, (which countries are in Melanesia - Fiji, Vanuatu, Solomon Islands and Papua New Guinea) and also so I can remember which countries are covered in the book.

At the moment I think I‘ll use it for #tonga for sure but may add some more obscure ones if they‘re covered.

squirrelbrain Oh, and forgot to say I love the local indie bookmarks! ❤️ 4mo
Librarybelle That does sound awesome! 4mo

Hooked_on_books Nice! I look forward to getting started! I had forgotten they stuffed bookmarks in both books. Nice bonus! 4mo
Hooked_on_books I know your schedule is crazy (seriously, you‘re carrying that company on your back!) and you likely aren‘t reading much of this, which I totally get, but wanted to let you know I‘ve finished part 2. I‘ve slowed to one piece a day and that‘s working better. I‘ve looked forward and most of part 3 is fiction, which should be interesting. 4mo
squirrelbrain Yes, I think one piece a day may be better Holly @Hooked_on_books otherwise they blend together a bit. I have two essays to go in Part 2, so I‘m not that far behind. Just sat down to do some reading (it‘s 3.30 pm) after working most of the day. And yes, it‘s Saturday here already! 🤷‍♀️ 4mo
Hooked_on_books Sadly I‘m no stranger to working on weekends, so I know it sucks! Hopefully you have more time to yourself on Sunday. I read the first essay of part 3 and it‘s a little lighter than the previous essays. I saw the next piece was fiction so I went ahead and read it and it‘s great! Clever and cheeky. 4mo
Hooked_on_books I finished part 3 last night. I didn‘t like The Tuktuks much, so I was not sure about the next piece from the same book, but ended up liking it much better (though it‘s bizarre!) and thought the interview was a great way to wind up that section. I may end up finishing the book today. 4mo
squirrelbrain Yes, there were a lot of a*ses weren‘t there?! @Hooked_on_books My next part is the interview so I‘m glad you enjoyed it. No more for me though today - it‘s bedtime over here! 🤣 4mo

Mehso-so

#ReadAroundTheWorld #Tonga I thought this book was about the author‘s travels to Tonga. Well yes, however the author is an ethnographer and this is an in-depth 30 year ethnographic case study on how globalization is impacting traditional Tongan culture. Fascinating. I learned a huge amount BUT it was slow going with many discussions about the changing nature of ethnography as well. Phew. Of the 220,000 Tongans in the world 50% live overseas.

rockpools Sometimes we end up reading *really* unexpected things for this challenge! 2y
