We follow Kein whose job in the Vietnam war was to search for dead bodies in the jungle. In the years after the war ended, he would drink to excess and write down the things that kept him up at night. This is his story. It's jumbled and mostly out of chronological order which can be confusing however the last few pages address the issues.

This book is full of horrors. Pages full of broken dreams and broken spirits. Lost lives, lost souls.

My #TBRtarot pick this month was beautiful and heart wrenching at the same time. The author tells the story of Vietnam and the things all soldiers carry both physically and emotionally. Im so glad I finally read this classic. I will be thinking about this one for a long time. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

kspenmoll Such a great book- Tim O‘Brien was interviewed by Ali Veshi as it is a banned book- we teach with it in my HS https://youtu.be/iXbwUFNh8pU?si=8_3Wo0xnOXwciwWY 3mo
Meshell1313 @kspenmoll oh wow! Thanks for this link! And banned?!?!?! I would have never guessed this would be on the list- how can you ban actual history? My goodness. Terrible and terrifying. 3mo
Meshell1313 @kspenmoll ok just watched it. Wow. What a great interview and soo recent! Made me love him even more and makes me want to take more action to stop book banning!!! Thank you for sharing! 3mo

I‘m posting one book a day from my massive collection. No description, no reason for why I want to read it (some I‘ve had so long I don‘t even remember why!). Feel free to join in!

This “memoir” of the Vietnam war feels like source material for so much that I‘ve seen concerning that conflict. The book is, however, incredibly poignant as it describes the moronic military leadership having ideas of war defined by outmoded memories of glory and courage. A soldier‘s POV without any deep analysis of the politics, shows war‘s absurdity and plodding futility.

Reggie I don‘t know if you like horror but there‘s this book called The Militia House by John Milas and you get the same vibes of military life. Where you have all these young guys who should have their whole lives ahead of them doing the bidding of people who seem like they have no clue what‘s going on. I loved it. 5mo
Reggie Also, great review and stacked. 5mo
Creadnorthey @Reggie I‘ll be searching that pick out- thanks for your recommendation! 5mo

Maybe when I was sick for what feels like the millionth time this year was not the best time to start a 600 page novel about the Vietnam war. I just can‘t see trying again.

The Sympathizer | Viet Thanh Nguyen
Pickpick

This was a difficult novel to read. It became more violent over time, but it is a novel about war. It was an interesting approach to the Vietnam War because all characters were flawed. It was impossible to determine who was right and who was wrong wich made the book more interesting. The story is told from the perspective of a Vietnamese refugee.#AAPI#vietnamwar#traumaticexperience#immigrantexperience
