Good. Set in Appalachia in the 1930s-40s. Coming of age story. Sad in parts, but not overwhelmingly depressing. Ends on a hopeful note (which makes sense because there is a series).

Today‘s Prompt: LUGGAGE ON THE COVER
Babies, folks helping each other, and a difficult, but wonderful era.
One of those books you won't want to put down because the characters are so wholesome and because the story is so homey and heartwarming. Patience and Becky are characters you would want for a friend.

I am stunned that I didn't know Jean had it in her to create a concept like this, follow through on it over and over again. After college. I attempted a few poems, and once a story. but the sense of exposure was too unnerving. To slip a little of myself imperceptibly into the language of others, as an editor, suggesting words for someone else, felt safer yet still creative, still satisfying.
Art! Mother- daughter relationship! Complicated and layered situations where you get to see multiple perspectives! Infrequently explored perspective of mountain people who do not hold right wing tendencies but have been steeped in the culture!

Prompt: CUT CORNERS
Patience is a midwife, and Becky is a nurse. Both women deliver babies together and share what they have food wise and material wise to “MAKE ENDS MEET.”
It is one of those books you won't want to put down because the characters are so wholesome and because the story is so homey and heartwarming.
