December's #Roll100 selection!
I'll try to get to “The Night Stalkers“ this month and I may go ahead and clear “Orchid Thief“ from my shelves and give away. This month is about clearing out and catching up so I can start 2024 fresh!
Thanks for the roll, @puddlejumper!
At first General Boykin's work was hard to get into. The chapters are short, but numerous. I would describe his writing style as someone giving snapshots of both his career and spiritual life. I forgot which chapter it was, but finally started to appreciate his life and get engrossed in his work. I highly recommend Never Surrender, especially those interested in U.S. Special Forces, faith in combat, and overcoming adversity.
Completed for “Good as Hell” prompt in #Nonfiction2023. Duckworth is a total badass: survived poverty and war as a child, became an Army helicopter pilot, was shot down over Iraq and lost both legs, won seats in Congress as both a Representative and now a Senator, and juggles it all while raising two young children (the youngest she gave birth to at the age of 50. 😳) If she isn‘t “good as hell,” I don‘t know who is.
This memoir struck a chord with me. In 2004, Tammy Duckworth, now a U.S. Senator from Illinois, was a Black Hawk helicopter pilot in the Army Reserves. After being shot down in Iraq, she lost both legs and badly injured her arm. My oldest son is a Huey helicopter pilot in the Marines, and her account of the accident seared my soul. I salute Duckworth‘s courage and resilience in rebuilding her life and her dedication to our country.
Adding a new name into the #independentwomen mix: U.S. Senator Tammy Duckworth (D-Illinois). A combat veteran of the Iraq War who served as a U.S. Army pilot, she lost both legs when her Black Hawk helicopter crashed. Despite her injuries, she got a medical waiver to continue serving in the IL Army National Guard for another 10 years. She's also the first senator to give birth while in office and is an inspiration to moms everywhere!
I‘m enjoying these books set in the War of the Spanish Succession set in the early part of the 18th Century. Plenty of action in this one, a battle, a spying mission, an escape from the Bastille and across France, and the maltreatment of a novice soldier that led to a surprise ending to the Battle 😱😢 Captain Rawson is a great character. #SeriesLoves2023 @TheSpineView
26th book finished for #JumpStart2023 @Clwojick @LizPixie
Time for some historical fiction, with the next book in the Captain Rawson Series #SeriesLove2023 This covers the European war of the Spanish Succession in the early 18th Century. Captain Rawson was introduced in the last book and is a great character, both spy and soldier. @TheSpineView
