Early 2025 was truly my own my own winter of discontent (second drumpf term, having to move in the middle of Feb, covid for the second time etc etc) Hornby's novel about a winner of a beauty queen pageant in a British village who proceeded to revolutionize tv has so far been one of my favorite reads of the year. Sophie Straw is absolutely terrific & the cast who surround her are in turns interesting & infuriating. This books has MUCH to say (CONT)

vivastory about the potential of thoughtful mass media, all too easily dismissed & those who only want to consume it if they can apply a label to it that makes them feel superior which persists to this day (ie elevated horror: a bullshit label...unless the movie actually is set in an elevator lol)
Sophie is a character that I just cannot forget & although this is only the second Hornby I read, I absolutely adored it. #bestreads2025 (edited) 9h

TheKidUpstairs @vivastory it's been about 20 years since i last read him (i can hardly believe that, even as i type it!) But I loved About A Boy, and Fever Pitch. And Polysyllabic Spree was fun, a collection of his magazine columns missing on his reading life. 8h
