Just Listen | Sarah Dessen

I think one of the reasons I love this book, over the past few I read, is because the main character is a bit more relatable than That Summer, Dreamland, and Someone like you. The earlier 3 all had MC‘s that seemed to always be doing drugs and drinking, hating their families. Totally different from my teenage years. I didn‘t drink until 18 (legal age in PR), never did drugs, rarely partied, and am loyal to my family. #Dessennewyear #cantrelate

Not That Kind of Girl | Lena Dunham

I. Absolutely. Hated. These. I really wanted to like these. I tried to make it work. Lena is just annoying and frustrating to say the least. I rolled my eyes at least 100 times in the 60 pages I read. Sweetbitter just wasn't for me. Seemed overly hyped. Then there was #Girlboss. Anything with the title "Girlboss" boils my blood. #DNF #cantrelate

BookishFeminist Annoying and frustrating are probably the most benign words I can use to describe Lena Denham. Right there with you on Girlboss too. 😩 8y
Reese_Pearly.Pages @BookishFeminist I really couldn't understand Hollywood's seemingly brief obsession with her. Sure the first season if Girls was good- but I didn't like her there either. This book just ended the slight interest I had in her. 8y
BookishFeminist @Reese_Pearly.Pages ditto, I got maybe 2 episodes into Girls when it came out? I really wanted to give it a shot but I can't stand her. I actually made it through her book and regret it. I want that bus ride back! 😭 I have a lot of issues with her feminism too 8y

BookBabe I was looking for work-inspirational mugs on Etsy and one that kept popping up was variations of "GirlBoss". It kind of made me want to scream. ? 8y
Reese_Pearly.Pages @BookBabe 😹 that sounds awful. I would have screamed. 8y
BookMusings I did not like Lena's book either. 😞 8y
LauraBeth Oh whew @Reese_Pearly.Pages and @BookishFeminist - I thought it was just me who had issues with her feminism! Now I feel better 😀 8y
MMFinck Honest curiosity: What's off with her feminism? I don't know much about her, and don't watch the show. She just seems very smart and her strength and social awareness seems like a positive force for girls. No? @BookishFeminist @LauraBeth Her seeming obsession with nakedness is odd to me, but I don't know much else. 8y
BookishFeminist @MMF In my opinion she has problems acknowledging the privileges that being a white, rich woman affords her. She's consistently excluded women of color from her narrative and explained away a lot of problematic things she's done in that regard. Just a couple of weeks ago she said in the media that "she wished she'd had an abortion" as if that's some sort of desirable status for women or feminists to attain rather than the often difficult ... 8y
BookishFeminist ...circumstances women are in when considering or getting one. Her memoir even valorizes how she fondled her sister when they were kids & doesn't address how harmful that can be, so i don't really see her as a good role model for young women either. It's not that she's never done anything positive for feminism but her views are frequently out of touch & that can have real, negative consequences for a lot of folks. 8y
BookishFeminist Sorry to hijack your DNF post with an angry feminist rant @Reese_Pearly.Pages 😆 8y
BookishFeminist @LauraBeth Far from just you! 8y
Reese_Pearly.Pages @BookishFeminist Haha it's ok. I share the same concerns actually. She doesn't acknowledge her privileges and status. I feel that she does or says things because she feels like she can. With no regard to how other women who aren't in her position are affected by her statements and actions. It also feels like she doesn't take responsibility- just excuses and reasons. 8y
Reese_Pearly.Pages @BookishFeminist I didn't know she said "she wished she had an abortion" ? Based on my experience it's not something I would just want to have because it's available. 8y
LauraBeth @MMF What @BookishFeminist said 😀IMO, she lives in a feminist bubble and lacks self-awareness of her unchecked white privilege. She'll tweet something about police brutality one second and then the next second propagate stereotypes of African American men in another tweet - all without any awareness that she's doing this. She has no clue that the implications of her words shine a spotlight on her privilege. And abortion is not a status symbol 8y
Reese_Pearly.Pages @LauraBeth Feminist bubble is a good description for it. 😄 8y
MMFinck This is all so enlightening. Thank you all for taking the time to share your thoughts, observations, and opinions! @Reese_Pearly.Pages @BookishFeminist @LauraBeth 8y
mrsh62010 Lena Dunham is horrible. I agree with everything here. 8y
Catchmeintheairica I was mad I wasted my money on Not that kind of Girl. 8y
Reese_Pearly.Pages @Catchmeintheairica Me too! After it sat on my shelf for over a year unfinished, I just gave it to my library. Taking up valuable space. 8y
