No Earthly Notion | Susan M. Dodd

It‘s hard to write a review of such a heartfelt story without reaching for cliches. I found the MC, Murana Bill, to be a tragic figure at first. She deals with the loss of her parents, becomes essentially a single mom to her younger brother and then nurses him when he returns from the Vietnam War with battle fatigue, or PTSD. He doesn‘t speak but has a tremendous appetite, which she feeds by endlessly cooking meals and preparing foods for him. ⬇️

psalva Later, however, Murana finds friendship in the character of Lucille. Their relationship is so well written and beautiful. Unfortunately, this is not a happy read. It‘s full of tragedy and sadness. Yet, in a way, it‘s more about learning how to move on and embrace life and happiness as well. This was a random find at a local used bookstore and I‘m glad I stumbled on it. 1y
Bookwomble I love finding a book like that ❤️😊 1y
psalva @Bookwomble Me too! It‘s a strange one because even though it‘s a Penguin Contemporary Classic edition, I can‘t find much about the author with a quick Google search. I know she‘s written other things but I need to do some digging to find out more about her. We‘ll see 😊 1y

“First thing is, I‘d like to see more smiling outa you, and that‘s God‘s truth. But don‘t you ever smile at me when you ain‘t feeling up to it. Not ever again, you hear?”
…”I got me a lot of faults. Now most folks figure faults should be got rid of, but I don‘t cotton to that notion much myself. Truth is, I‘m afraid I get rid of my faults, mightn‘t be much left to me.”

I really enjoyed this book. It taught me so much about the changing nature of the world over the past several years and how that connects to Christian faith. I was personally encouraged throughout this book to keep growing in renewal and leadership.

Picked these up on recommendation from a friend. Really enjoying so far. Simple and I kind of want to say sweet but I'm only about 5 chapters in.
