I love when libraries have their little lists on Libby - this little gem is from Queens Public Library‘s Native American Heritage list. I may have downloaded like 10 books. Gonna read them while listening to football games.

In “Lupe Lopez: Rock Star Rules“ by Pat Zietlow Miller and e.E. Charlton-Trujillo, 2022, Lupe Lopez is SO excited for her first day of kindergarten! She is ready to rock and role with her pencils. She gets in trouble for being loud and rethinks everything, then gets her pencils taken away and does not enjoy class anymore until she makes some friends and they make a band.
Today I‘ve got two book recommendations. I couldn‘t immediately think of one, so I asked my niece. She recommends Blended, for which I‘ve heard great reviews but not yet read myself. Isabella is a pianist.
Then, I considered my Goodreads shelf and remembered the tagged book in which Melly is a drummer and goes to a music summer camp.

An inspiring picture book biography about an amazing Scottish musician, world famous solo percussionist Evelyn Glennie, who has been deaf since childhood. Joyful art is by Devon Holzwarth.
In the author‘s note, Shannon writes of her own disability, Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy, and how the achievements of Evelyn Glennie inspired her not to give up on her musical dreams. While writing this biography, she asked Glennie what message she wanted to share with young readers.
Glennie: “Create your own story. You cannot wait for things to happen to you. You must make your own opportunities.”
If your ears can‘t hear the strum,
or hum,
or thrum of a melody,
can music still swirl and whirl?
It did for Evelyn Glennie.
