My bookclub is on a nonfiction kick and this month we learned about Captain Cook. Mostly about Cook‘s last expedition, the people and their cultures they met and life on the waters from New Zealand to Alaska and back to Hawaii where Cook met his fate. Interesting and thought provoking for sure.

Amiable I love Hampton Sides —if you haven‘t already read this one, I highly recommend it : 1mo

Once again I am conflicted as to how to rate this. I think the beginning of this could have benefitted from better organization. There was a lot of information thrown out, out there that eventually started to make sense, is my only real issue.

I am always fascinated by “exploration“ type books even if a lot of them are motivated by greed and colonialism. There is still so much merit there.

Doppoetry It was so interesting to read about Fawcett and the prospects of a lost civilization in the Amazon.

A part of me knows better, but a part of me hopes there is still a surviving ancient civilization that does its best to stay hidden to protect its peace. Something that is not meant for contemporary eyes to see.

October bookclub pick by Marge. I lived in Hawaii for 10 yrs and Cook's reputation there is not necessarily one of honor but i am interested in what Hampton Sides research tells us of the man.

Must revise previous mention of Cooke family in Hawaii, they are not related to Captain Cook, they were associated with the sugar industry in Hawaii where they made their fortune.

Really interesting story of the 1930‘s flashy dress designer who fell in love with China and brought back the first live panda. It went to Brookfield Zoo in Chicago area. Author did a lot of research and it reads very well like Seabiscuit a few years ago.

KCofKaysville @JuliaTheBookNerd I really liked it too. There is a movie of it also but that was not so great as I recall. 7mo
