Pickpick

My IRL book group chose this one and all agreed it‘s harrowing and bleak. The author is from our hometown and some group members have connections to her family. If you love a memoir where the MC starts out privileged but bottoms out, then this is for you. Despite that, Blakinger has focus and drive amidst the chaos and is now an advocate for the (current or formerly) incarcerated.

BarbaraTheBibliophage Counting this for #imanathlete on the #nonfictionchallenge2022 bingo board, since the author was a competitive figure skater in her childhood and teen years. The pressures of competing didn‘t help her addictive nature one bit. @Riveted_Reader_Melissa 2y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa That totally works for me! 2y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @Riveted_Reader_Melissa Thanks! I was planning something different, of course. But sheesh, it‘s already practically October! (edited) 2y

I enjoyed hearing/listening to Ibtihaj Muhammad‘s journey from HS athlete to Olympian. She did throw plenty of shade around but I‘m sure her frustration over years of micro & macro aggressions were stressful, hateful & difficult to endure. Kudos to Ibtihaj for showing grit and fortitude. #NF22 #ImAnAthlete @Riveted_Reader_Melissa She does visit #Tunisia so I‘m cheating & using this for #ReadingAfrica22
