Pickpick

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️1/2

It's so satisfying, finding yourself enjoying a book you never intended to read, by an author you had decided was not for you. Oh the joy of expectations surpassed.

Part One of this book has this beautiful elegiac, end of summer, end of a friendship feel to it that I haven't seen replicated so perfectly in a novel before.
My only reasoning for not giving this the full 5-stars was for some awkwardness towards the end.

Redheadrambles @ClairesReads haha well even if you don‘t like it I think the why will make a good discussion! 😀 7y

Marchpane Ooh I'm excited to read this now! 7y
Redheadrambles @Marchpane oh yes do! it is a pretty quick read. I loved it but I suspect based on reviews it can be polarising but I am all fired up for more Messud in 2018 😀 7y
Redwritinghood Wow - you got through that fast! I‘m only on page 51 right now, but agree about the nostalgic, end-of-summer feel about the beginning. 7y
Redheadrambles @Redwritinghood I know ! I did really burn through it (ha ha 😀) and I am usually the slow poke reader. Will be interested in your thoughts on each section. For me I am not sure Part 2 and 3 ever reached the heights of Part 1 but there was still plenty to admire. 7y
Redwritinghood @Redheadrambles Just finished today and definitely thought part 1 was the best. Part 2 is what brought my rating down. It felt like she was just getting that transitional bit out of the way so she could move into the more interesting part 3. 7y
Redheadrambles @Redwritinghood interesting! As for me it was the last part that brought my rating down (slightly) all the he said, she said carry on. Or maybe that was towards the end of Pt 2. Nevertheless I think I appreciated more after reading her interview in the Powell‘s Booklet. Still I kinda loved this and want to read more. Have you read anything else by her ? 7y
Redwritinghood @Redheadrambles I haven‘t but would probably do so. 7y
Redheadrambles @Redwritinghood have you read the Indiespensable edition of “Sing Buried Sing” yet ? 7y
Redwritinghood @Redheadrambles No, but I have that planned for December. 7y

So I am a keen follower of the Powell‘s #Indiespensable programme, which brings out new selections every six to eight weeks. I saw that there is a Litsy group for BoTM buddy reads and wondered if other Indiespensable followers wanted to do a similar thing for these books ? I was thinking to buddy read them or discuss them a couple of months after they are released just so if you want to join you could get the book from the library if you want 😀

Redheadrambles I will read The Burning Girl in Nov to kick this off (Indiespensable Vol. 68) and I guess put out some discussion questions during that time ? ( I don‘t know I am new to this ! ) #indiespensablebuddyread (edited) 7y
bookloo I‘ve been meaning to read The Burning Girl for a little while now! I‘d love to join. ☺️ 7y
Redheadrambles @bookloo Awesome 😎 I have no idea how to host these. I will need to see how you do it ;) but yeah it will help me get through a TBR pile and these Indispensable selections are so good. 7y

catiewithac I pretty much read them as soon as they arrive! Zero impulse control! 7y
ClairesReads Defs keen for December! 7y
ClairesReads Ps we should do a buddy read for one of the #readharder tasks next year 😊 7y
Redheadrambles @catiewithac ah yes fair enough. I guess my problem is they take ages to get delivered to NZ. I still don‘t have Vol. 69 yet. 7y
Redheadrambles @ClairesReads Great 👍🏻 looking forward to it. And yes agreed certainly we should Buddy Read a #ReadHarder ! I am already excited for the 2018 list 7y
Redheadrambles @ClairesReads I have such a large TBR pile so I am really hoping I can use some of them for next year - I don‘t want to read anything now that I think I could use later ;) Strategic reading problems haha 😂 7y
ClairesReads @Redheadrambles I'm always the same- but I did that last year and only ended up using about 2 books for read harder this year! 7y
Redheadrambles @ClairesReads I feel if writers could just maybe hold off publishing for one year I could catch up ? 7y
Suet624 I unsubscribed recently but loved the books they chose to send out. Been trying to keep up with what they pick as their selection but it's hard to see the backlist of books. (edited) 7y
Redheadrambles @Suet624 yes I hear you I unsubscribed and then resubscribed at various points. It IS frustrating to find a complete list. However currently I can tell you Vol 68. Is “The Burning Girl” as linked above. Vol 69. Is “Sing, Unburied Sing” and Vol 70. ( due Nov ) is “Her Body and Other Parties”. Super excited particularly about these last two as the feature on the #nationalbookaward shortlist. I will put more of a feature post on each when I get them 7y
Suet624 Thanks so much for the info. Powell's does a fabulous job of picking prize winners. 7y
Redwritinghood Sounds interesting. I‘ve been getting Powell‘s for a few months now and would likely join the buddy reads. 7y
ClairesReads @Redheadrambles yes! That's exactly it! 7y
Redheadrambles @Redwritinghood ah yes I have seen your reviews of past books. I think we both read Stephen Florida ? and I attempted the book of short stories and failed :( Be so great to discuss them even if you read them before I even get them in the mail down here 😀 (edited) 7y
Redwritinghood @Redheadrambles I actually haven‘t read that one yet. It was the first issue I got from Powell‘s but is still sitting on my tbr. 7y
ClairesReads Out of curiosity...how much does your subscription cost you to get it down here? I despair that BOTM etc isn't international...sometimes it feels like we really are in the middle of nowhere! 7y
Redheadrambles @ClairesReads Oh man it‘s waaay too much but I got it as a birthday present for a couple of volumes at least. However considering exchange rates I think I will be reverting to using it as a guide and getting them from the library soon ! Also they take a silly long time to arrive.... 7y
ClairesReads @Redheadrambles oh preach it's so sad right?? 7y
ClairesReads Woo my copy just arrived for January 6y
Redheadrambles @ClairesReads Yippee I am really hoping mine is at home when I get there ! 6y
