Dear Mr. You | Mary-Louise Parker
post image
Pickpick

Mary-Louise Parker is a writer. Yes, she's also an actor. But this memoir, told in a series of essays addressed to men in her life, men who are identified most often by station or function or position ("Dear Former Boyfriend," "Dear Mentor," and so on) rather than by name, is simply gorgeous. It's whimsical and serious and heartbreaking. ⬇️

UnabridgedPod When Parker has a confrontation with a taxi driver, fully committing to her rage at his driving at the wrong direction, and then breaks down because she's pregnant and alone and scared, I FELT every moment of her anger and her vulnerability and her sadness. And her empathy for this man who had come into contact with her at a bad time. (I should say here that I listened, via @scribd, and that Parker reads her book herself. ⬇️ 2d
UnabridgedPod I can't recommend her narration more--actors make great readers of their own memoirs, and her voice is so strong in the writing already. Just wow.) Through every moment of this book, Parker makes clear her independence, her love for her children, her love for her parents, her hopes and her heartbreaks. I can't recommend Dear Mr. You more. ⬇️ 2d
UnabridgedPod What books by non-writers (or, I should say, by people who you know first as something other than a writer) have you enjoyed? Has anyone else read this one? 2d
KarenUK Loved this book! She‘s a great writer.... I also really enjoyed this one by an actor (edited) 2d
UnabridgedPod @KarenUK Thanks for the rec! I‘ll have to check that out for sure. 😊 2d

I‘ve played piano since I was 5, I can‘t put into words the joy it brings me to go to my parents house and be able to play my baby grand. It truly is my oldest friend.

Four more for #LitsyAtoZ!
#LetterG -A Gentleman in Moscow - I‘m not sure why I didn‘t like this book when I started it the first time - it was great!
#LetterH - The House of Silk - also good
#LetterM - The Mysterious Bakery on the Rue de Paris - a fun read
#LetterS - Sanditon - all 12 chapters. I can‘t wait to watch this on Masterpiece.

Mehso-so

The first half of this book really gripped my attention but it felt less composed and plausible in the second half. At times it felt like every character was vying to be the most "well-intentioned but still racist" and many characters were portrayed stereotypically. I certainly think there is a lot to unpack in the story but found there to be a lot of convenient coincidences that weakened the plot. Overall, this was ⭐⭐⭐ 1/2 out of 5, for me.

Cathythoughts I thought the first half was different & this turned out to be a completely different book than the one I started..... but I loved it all 3d

Pickpick

This is a reluctant pick. Superb writing. Complex plot. Brilliant subject based on true circumstances: women left with little choice but to become men to own their own lives but under severe penalty for breaking that oath. Extremely unlikeable characters, who never fulfill expectations for a complex plot and brilliant subject matter. They just remain irritating characters without redemption. #readingeurope2020 #albania #litsyatoz #letterS

Librarybelle Good choice! 4d
BarbaraBB Great review. I can use this one for Albania too! 4d
