The Gone-Away World | Nick Harkaway

Pickpick

The unnamed narrator is a firefighter in a post-apocalyptic world. In the first chapter he and his crew are called out to a fire, but then change to a flashback for more than half the book.

Up until the big reveal about 2/3 of the way through, we followed some very, very funny detours but I don't think the actual story was enough to carry the reader on by itself, particularly as I kept losing track of who was who.

PICK with reservations.

too busy battling the Evangelist‘s blazing determination to ban on religious grounds several of the texts students are required to study that year. Gulliver‘s Travels survives the scissors, as does A Christmas Carol, but Modern Short Stories in English is consigned for ever to the forbidden zone. Sadly, it is so dull that not even this recommendation can make any of us read it more than once.

20 years ago or so, I woke in the night with a crushing chest pain. My husband called an ambulance and because we had a young child, couldn't come with me. In the panic, neither of us thought to supply me with a book.

I was fine, but I was there for hours, getting tests and just lying there with nothing. What kept me from going completely mad was my obsession with this book, which I was able to “read“ from memory.

Wow. Um, I kind of feel like I can't talk about all the reasons I love this book because they're MAJOR spoilers. I will say: hang in there. You're going to be introduced to a rowdy group, an intriguing set of circumstances and an imminent mission, and then that will be put on hold to tell the majority of someone's life story, get acquainted with those introduced, and then you pick up at where you left off 1/?

Robotswithpersonality 2/? and things get wild in a way I, at least, did not see coming. In that first half/two-thirds there are elements of war/dystopian novels from which I usually run a mile. The social commentary is exquisitely impactful. The last third (? reading this on ebook has mucked up my sense of page count) reads very different but still has something to say with a great conclusion. Again, SPOILERS! 9mo
Robotswithpersonality 3/3 What I will say: there are ninjas, and nightmares, and love and incredible fight scenes and beloved characters. Yeah, if there was any doubt, Nick Harkaway is now affirmed as a favourite author. And now I have to wait until his next novel is published! ⚠️animal death, (+not sure how to describe it, but probably fits best under body horror?) 9mo

Absolutely loving this series. This volume is one story broken into 7 parts. It's an all out war when one of the lords is building a weapon cache to take over his enemies. So not only does Usagi fight him but joins forces with the ninjas and his two other friends. Very sad at the end but losses are to be expected when fighting to save someone's life is involved.
