Is anyone interested as reading this as a year long group read in 2022? I‘d love some company! #1001books #nryb

vivastory This sounds interesting.. 2y
BarbaraBB Yes, I‘d love to! I‘ve been meaning to read it for a long time. Thanks for asking! @emilyhaldi @vivastory are you in as well? 2y
vivastory @BarbaraBB Count me in! I'm going to order a copy 📚 2y

BarbaraBB @vivastory Nice! I just did too. Great idea Jennifer! 2y
JenniferP @BarbaraBB @vivastory Excellent! I'm so happy to have some company! I'm much more comfortable on LT, so we'll have to talk about how to best do a group read on litsy. 2y
vivastory @JenniferP @BarbaraBB I'm also on LT (infrequent user). We can use that for the main discussion if you would like. 2y
BarbaraBB @JenniferP @vivastory I‘m okay with both! I don‘t think @emilyhaldi is on LT but she just had a baby and won‘t have much time to read I guess. 2y
JenniferP @BarbaraBB @vivastory I had asked on LT in the 1001 books group if anyone would like to read this and didn't get any takers, but maybe I'll bump it up. If we get some interest there we could use LT and if not I'm willing to try litsy. On Litsy, would we just periodically make a post and tag each other as we read and have comments?
2y
vivastory @JenniferP @BarbaraBB Sounds good. I think that periodic posts with tagging each other would be a good idea. Maybe at the end of the month we could exchange our thoughts on the book for that particular month? General impression for the month etc 2y
BarbaraBB @vivastory @JenniferP That sounds good to me. Looking forward to it! 2y
Graywacke Interested 🙋🏻‍♂️ - but it might be an overly optimistic interest considering what else i plan to read. 2y
vivastory @Graywacke You should join! 2y
JenniferP @Graywacke @BarbaraBB @vivastory - we'd love to have you! I looked at the book and there are 4 volumes. They aren't even in pages, but roughly 400-450 each. I think matching those volumes up with 3 month chunks of the year would work well. Keeps it a pretty loose schedule. I've had a couple people on LT express loose interest as well, so I'm thinking of starting a thread in the 1001 books group. I'm happy to discuss on both litsy and LT! 2y
BarbaraBB @Graywacke Yay Dan, It would be great to have you join us! It seems not too hard if I hear you @JenniferP I hope my copy will be delivered soon. I know @Liz_M read it, maybe she can tell us what to expect! 2y
Liz_M It's is not difficult at all -- just long. It should be easy to break up as it is structured in daily entries (Aug 21, 1967 - Aug 20, 1968). I think it is better read in larger chunks, which help the flow given the jumping around in two main storylines and the plethora of narrators. Also, as Americans with not a strong grounding in European history, as you near the end of the novel check out the historical significance of the end date. 2y
JenniferP @Liz_M good to know! Fair warning to all - I often end up reading faster than planned once I get in a groove with a book, but I will stay on the discussion pace. And thanks for the tip about the end date - I'll look into it! I will definitely like a group to help each other with the European history. Feel free, all, to tag anyone else on litsy who might be interested! 2y
Graywacke @vivastory @BarbaraBB - I think you convinced me. I‘ll hunt down a copy today. @Liz_M Good info. Thanks! (edited) 2y
emilyhaldi Thanks for thinking of me!!! I would love to join this read along but @BarbaraBB is right that this new little baby has taken up a bit of my time these days 🙃 I also start a new job on 1/5 so that doesn‘t help matters. Keep me posted once you get started and I‘ll see if I can swing it! 🤞🏻 2y
BarbaraBB @emilyhaldi We will, no pressure! Is little Hank doing good? Are you enjoying motherhood? 2y
JenniferP @emilyhaldi we'd love you to join, but I get it on being a new mom plus new job! We'll keep you tagged when we start. 2y
arubabookwoman I will join in the group read whether on Litsy or LT, and will attempt not to drop out, though I'm usually pretty bad at following through with things like this. I already have the multivolume set on my shelf, and started it once in the past. (At the same time Liz did). 2y
vivastory @JenniferP @BarbaraBB I have been thinking about it & I think I'm going to need to bow out of the group read. I have a lot going on right now & not sure that a year long commitment would be a good idea for me. Sorry! I will definitely be following your posts with interest. 2y
BarbaraBB I am sorry to hear that @vivastory but you should take care of yourself and not do things that feel obligatory 🤍. (edited) 2y
BarbaraBB @arubabookwoman Happy You‘re joining Deborah! I‘m not as disciplined as Jennifer either (Proust took me 3 years) but I‘m excited to try! 2y
JenniferP @vivastory totally understand! I always get excited about group reads but sometimes when I think about actually getting down to doing it I realize it's too much. Hope you'll still follow along a bit and maybe you'll get to it some other time! 2y
JenniferP @BarbaraBB @graywacke @arubabookwoman Next question is if we'd like our main posts to be on litsy or LT? I did have two LTers who don't do litsy express a little interest in following along. If we did LT, I would still post about Anniversaires at the end of each quarter on litsy to make sure we aren't leaving anyone out. Thoughts? 2y
bnp @JenniferP I'm on LT more than Litsy, but can do either. my question is, are we doing weekly discussions? Once a month? Just posting as we go? (I would like some structure where I'm accountable to show up, otherwise I get distracted by shiny new things. ) 2y
BarbaraBB @JenniferP Let‘s do both indeed. I know Dan, Deborah, you and @bnp are active on LT. I prefer Litsy but I can follow along on LT too of course! Thanks Jennifer! (edited) 2y
Graywacke @BarbaraBB I like this idea. 2y
Graywacke @bnp ok, I don‘t have the book yet and haven‘t 100% committed yet, but for what it‘s worth I‘m in favor of more structure over less. (Also, I‘m in favor of a lazy pace, if that‘s an option. But ok regardless, as long as i can manage it.) 2y
BarbaraBB Like @Graywacke I‘m in favor of a lazy pace 😀 but I think your proposal to read a volume each 3 months seems pretty relaxed! 2y
bnp I'd like a slow pace too - I took 1700 pages & divided by 48 weeks & came up with 35 pages/week with a few weeks in there for I -didn't-get -to -it-this-week. Is that doable? 2y
Graywacke @bnp i think so. (I ordered a copy today. My boxed set should arrive the 1st week of January.) 2y
JenniferP I will start a thread somewhere on LT at some point this week and provide a link here when it's up. There are lots of options for pacing. You could do one day per day since it's a daily journal, though they differ in length. I will aim to finish one volume per quarter, likely reading in bursts and then taking breaks rather than doing 4-5 pages per day, but any of the above will keep us in roughly the same place to discuss. 2y
emilyhaldi @BarbaraBB Hank is great and we had a good rhythm going!…then he hit 4 months and things went haywire 🤪 he‘s not loving naps recently & with holiday activities reading has been a struggle. Hoping we get things somewhat back on schedule before I start work next week 🤞🏻hope you and your family are doing well and enjoying the holidays!!! ❤️ 2y
BarbaraBB @emilyhaldi A rhythm is a must for working mothers but it‘s hard to keep it going. My daughter didn‘t nap during the day, that was hell 🥴. Good luck with work. Are you looking forward to it or is it hard to leave little Hank? 2y
emilyhaldi @BarbaraBB ugh, the no napping is brutal 😑 I‘m feeling very sad to leave Hank for the new job, and stressed about balancing everything, but trying to be positive 😅 2y
