I was so emotionally invested in this story. Although the characters are fictional, the government sponsored sterilization of poor, black, and sometimes mentally-challenged young girls is a disturbing piece of not-so-distant American history that should be documented and understood.

marleed @TheAromaofBooks I can‘t believe I finished both my BookSpin and DoubleSpin in less than a week. And fun tidbit - both these physical books were LFL finds from 2023! 2mo
marleed @CBee Oh for me too! It was a different story than I was expecting expecting. I think the gorgeous cover had me thinking the time period was much earlier than it was. …@Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks - I think you are going to love this! Do you have a physical copy? If not, I‘ll send you mine. 2mo
marleed @Alwaybeenaloverofbooks Hey Misty, I don‘t think my tag for you worked in the previous comment! 2mo
TheAromaofBooks Nice!!! It's always extra fun to get LFL gems!! 2mo
Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks @marleed I do!! Thank you so much though! Did the package I sent make it to you? ❤️❤️ 2mo
marleed @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks yes, it arrived early Friday just minutes after I finished a book so I started it immediately. I‘m almost to the epilogue. If I finish it, I‘ll post tomorrow. You are beyond wonderful! 2mo

Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

It's hard to find historical fiction from WWII that is set in the Pacific Theater. I absolutely loved this book, which fictionalizes the real story of a group of nuns from the Australian Army Nursing Service as they and other women shipwrecked from the Vyner Brooke try to survive in a Japanese POW Camp.

The last op shop I visited on Thurs was such a goldmine it didn‘t all fit in this pic. I got a Ghanda tote bag. My step daughters are obsessed with that shop. I usually wrap their presents in them. I scored a May Gibbs gum nut babies handmade 1 as well for the bargain price of $2. There are also toiletries you can‘t see as well as an oil burner, a bandanna & bows to clip above my bun for ballet. I didn‘t try on the swimmers and the top doesn‘t fit

Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks Awesome 🤩 2mo
Crazeedi I love how you find such treasures in your stores!! So cool 2mo

Emotionally difficult read, but an important story based in fact surrounding terrible practices by government medical programs in “helping” poor black women in the south in the 1970s. Investigations that came from this case expanded victims to include women of Latin descent. The authors note includes examples of this practice still happening today.

Bess Crawford is an English nurse serving in World War I. I‘m not sure why, although by posting this I‘m sure someone will explain it to me, but the English refer to nurses as “Sisters.” Bess served in France and cared for a pilot who was seriously burned in a crash. When his wife is murdered he feels he has nothing to live for and kills himself. Bess is drawn deep into the search for a murderer and becomes obsessed with finding (cont)⬇️

CatLass007 his or her identity. An officer who was friends with the pilot‘s wife is charged with her murder and with the attempted murder of another woman. Bess races to find the killer before the officer is hanged. This is a mystery with high stakes and several suspects. This is the second book in a thirteen (so far) book series. I‘ll keep going with the series and I recommend that if you like mysteries that aren‘t cozy, you try it too. (cont)⬇️ (edited) 4mo
CatLass007 I like cozy mysteries but sometimes I like a mystery that has a little more depth. 4mo
rwmg As I understand it, the ranks were nurse, sister (in charge of a ward) and matron (in charge of all nursing staff in a hospital). The best trained nurses with the best attitude to their patients tended to be nuns and so were naturally addressed as sister. 4mo
CatLass007 @rwmg Thank you. I guess all those years of being tormented by nuns in elementary school make me question whether nuns really were the best. 4mo

Audio cooking today! It‘s my day off work today so, even though it‘s warmer today than it has been recently, I‘m making homemade chili! My husband has been begging me to make it since the first sign of fall was in the air.
I really like this audio book so far but have had a little trouble keeping up with the multiple characters since they aren‘t separated by chapters.

Having children sent away, being on a boat sunk by the Japanese, taken prisoner, and living without decent health care or food is where we meet all those who survived from the Vyner Brooke merchant ship and others as they endure the hardships in a Japanese POW camp.

Based on true events and real women.

I enjoyed her other books more, but this is still a good read.

I needed the joy that this #reread brings. The whole trading places concept is so fun, and I love the calamities at the end before Lissa and Cormac finally meet! #contemporaryfiction #womensfiction
