From three bestselling authors comes an interwoven tale about a trio of World War II nurses stationed in the South Pacific who wage their own battle for freedom and survival. The Philippines, 1941. When U.S. Navy nurse Eleanor Lindstrom, U.S. Army nurse Penny Franklin, and Filipina nurse Lita Capel forge a friendship at the Army Navy Club in Manila, they believe theyre living a paradise assignment. All three are seeking a way to escape their pasts, but soon the beauty and promise of their surroundings give way to the heavy mantle of war. Caught in the crosshairs of a fight between the U.S. military and the Imperial Japanese Army for control of the Philippine Islands, the nurses are forced to serve under combat conditions and, ultimately, endure captivity as the first female prisoners of the Second World War. As their resiliency is tested in the face of squalid living arrangements, food shortages, and the enemys blatant disregard for the articles of the Geneva Convention, the women strive to keep their hope and their fellow inmatesalive, though not without great cost. In this sweeping story based on the true experiences of nurses dubbed the Angels of Bataan, three women shift in and out of each others lives through the darkest days of the war, buoyed by their unwavering friendship and distant dreams of liberation. Three of the biggest powerhouses in historical fiction come together to pen this breathtaking story of three nurses serving in the Philippines during the Second World War. PAM JENOFF, New York Times bestselling author of The Woman with the Blue Star World War II historical fiction Stand-alone novel Book length: approximately 128,000 words Includes discussion questions for book clubs

Audio cooking today! It‘s my day off work today so, even though it‘s warmer today than it has been recently, I‘m making homemade chili! My husband has been begging me to make it since the first sign of fall was in the air.
I really like this audio book so far but have had a little trouble keeping up with the multiple characters since they aren‘t separated by chapters.

One of the last WWII books I am reviewing for our new WWII unit. This one is set in Phillipines and follows a number of nurses from different backgrounds.

THIS is exactly what I love about amazing historical fiction: it presents a new angle to history that we maybe don‘t know much about, we learn something while reading that possibly prompts us to look up more of the history behind it, and we get to meet some dynamic characters that being the story to life. Each of these authors are favorites of mine when it comes to histfic and I absolutely loved the narrator as well. A lot of what these ⬇️

candc320 Cont‘d: characters went through was brutal and everything didn‘t wrap up in the perfect little bow which I appreciate as it makes it seems more authentic to what history would tell us. I only wish the audiobook I listened to included the author notes at the end, which I always appreciate. Easy 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 13mo

You may enjoy this if you can read another WWII story! This is on the Eastern Front- the Philippines.
The story is very good, the epilogue great, and so far the authors' notes are incredible!
Two of these authors are going to be at an upcoming book event in San Diego: #AdventuresByTheBooks #SuperBookIV
I‘m trying to read some of the authors‘ backlists before I go.

Bookzombie I think I have read all of but one Lawhon‘s books. They were all picks for me. 1y

23 #1 I‘ve set my reading goal for the year at only 100. I‘m considering going back to school … maybe. If I do there will be a lot less time for pleasure reading. I feel like my 2022 reads were not great. For the most part. I‘m starting out strong with this one for 2023!

tpixie While I liked the story, I found the Epilogue & Authors‘ note fantastic! Good luck with your decision re: going to school!! Between school and children I had many years of hardly any reading, except for boxes of food 😅 and magazines. But luckily there‘s been plenty of time to make up for it later! 1y

What these three women (military nurses) has to go through was unreal! This book gave the perspective of WW2 from the South Pacific. I found it interesting to hear the 3 different perspectives of the friends. Each perspective was written by a separate author. A big thank you to my bookclub, #ReadWithSharon, for selecting this book for the November 2022 read! I‘m looking forward to our discussion with the authors.

Three nurses find themselves in the middle of conflict in the Pacific theatre of WWII and eventually as POWs in the Philippines. I love Ariel Lawhon and I liked the setting here, but found this otherwise lackluster. The women were not different enough from one another and there‘s too much focus on romantic storylines.

tpixie I most enjoyed the epilogue and authors‘ note! 1y
