This Africanfuturist novella reads like a folktale from a near-future Ghana about Sankofa, “the adopted daughter of Death.” It‘s important to know that the Sankofa bird is Ghanaian symbol of retrieval from the past. This left me with more questions than answers, but it is a meditation on tradition and technology as powerful as it is brief. (On #petsandpagesmonday, I share a photo of an adoptable shelter cat with my current read for our bookshop.)

underground_bks Read for March Bookland Challenge: Sci-fi—Favorite Author 3y
Palimpsest That cat is absolutely gorgeous! 3y
underground_bks @Palimpsest his name is Lorenzo and he looks like a doll to me! 😍 3y
Palimpsest Absolutely! I have two older cats, but if I didn‘t live so far away (WI) I‘d want to meet this guy. I hope Lorenzo finds a loving home. @underground_bks 3y
underground_bks @Palimpsest we have two too, and my husband and both cats are firm that we‘re at max capacity—I could be persuaded! 😂 3y

Spindle's End | Robin McKinley
post image
Pickpick

On Mondays, I take pictures with an adoptable pet at our local animal shelter for #petsandpagesmonday! A retelling of the fairy tale of Sleeping Beauty, Spindle‘s End is by one of my favorite childhood authors, Robin McKinley, but this was my first time reading it! This comforting, gentle fantasy is a perfect read for Spring and for anyone who needs a little escape from the worries of our world. Read for March Bookland: Fantasy—green cover.

Reggie This is very cool. And I hope the cat got adopted. 3y
underground_bks @Reggie thanks! I look forward to it every week! This is Baghera, and he hasn‘t been adopted yet but I know he will! He‘s such a sweetheart. 3y

[Every Monday I go to our local shelter to take a picture of an adoptable cat for our bookstore‘s social media—this is Edward!] Like First, We Make the Beast Beautiful, This One Wild and Precious Life is like a whole-hearted, big-spirited, deep-into-the-night conversation with a good friend. And like any rich conversation, you‘re bound to find disagreements or blind spots, but the process is life-affirming, imagination-wilding, heart-enlarging.

AmyG I love this. 💕 3y
Soubhiville Aw, Edward! He‘s very handsome. I hope he finds his fur-ever home soon. 💕 3y
underground_bks @Soubhiville me too! He was a shy little guy but obviously such a love! 3y

Freshwater | Akwaeke Emezi

Freshwater is like no book I‘ve ever read. From a Western lens, Ada appears to suffer from multiple personality disorder, but Freshwater narrates her experience through traditional Igbo spirituality and the concept of the Ogbanjé, an evil spirit. Psychologically, sexually, and spiritually, Ada transcends definition, and this book is a wonderful reminder of all we don‘t know.

(On #petsandpagesmonday, I highlight an adoptable cat—this is Bagels!)

StillLookingForCarmenSanDiego Bagles is beautiful 🤩 3y
Leftcoastzen 😻sweet kitty! 3y
Reggie Really great review! I liked this book a lot. It was painful though. 3y

underground_bks @StillLookingForCarmenSanDiego this was just my third time going to the shelter but so far we have a 100% adoption rate of featured cats! 3y
underground_bks @Leftcoastzen one of the biggest perks of my job! 3y
underground_bks @Nebklvr she sure is! 3y

underground_bks @batsy yes exactly! Thank you so much—this one was hard to review and I wanted so much to do it justice! 3y

How to Do Nothing | Jenny Odell
post image
Pickpick

This book is not a social media detox—it‘s way weirder than that! How to Do Nothing is about resisting the attention economy—directing our attention with intention, valuing activities that cannot be commodified and are thus defined as “nothing.” Through examples of cool ass performance art, bioregionalism, radical history, and more, artist Jenny Odell blazes a way back toward repossessing one of our most endangered, vital resources—our attention.

candority Such a pretty kitty! 😻 3y
underground_bks My bookstore is spotlighting cats up for adoption in our local shelter through #petsandpagesmonday. This is Mrs. Ellie and she got adopted last week! 🥳 3y
Leftcoastzen Yay!😹😻 3y

Parable of the Sower | Octavia E. Butler

This book is the ORIGINAL YA dystopian novel, but it is so much more than that. In 2024, America is impoverished, lawless, and environmentally devastated. Lauren Olamina is a 15 year old Black girl with the hidden birth defect of hyperempathy and an even bigger secret: a religion of her own creation called Earthseed. Her home destroyed, Lauren becomes the leader of a ragtag band of survivors, eager to prove whether Earthseed can provide salvation.

Kammbia1 One of my all time favorite novels. I have recommended this novel to a lot of readers over the years. 4y
AmyG Your model is 🙌🏻 4y
underground_bks @Kammbia1 I read it when I was in college but after reading Emergent Strategy, I just had to delve back in and I annotated it up! It‘s really brilliant. I‘m eager to read Parable of the Talents—any thoughts on that one? 4y

underground_bks @AmyG my cat Peter! 😻 we do a feature called #petsandpagesmonday with him on our bookstore Facebook and Instagram. He is impeding me from getting up to pick my next book right now 😂 4y
Kammbia1 Parable of the Talents is a good novel. I will admit that I liked Parable of the Sower more. However, Parable of the Talents is worth reading and is the second half of the full story.
