I read this in 10 to 15-minute sittings over 3.5 months

This is an oddball collection. There is one poem from every chancellor, fellow and award winner of the Academy of American Poets as of 1996 (The academy was founded in a 1934). But who selected them? It comes across as a very haphazard anthology from a wonderful body of poets. So interesting, sometimes wonderful, many times really wonderful, but mostly curious and interesting.

Suet624 I bet Richard Eberhart has a poem in there. I just finished reading a book about him written by his daughter. I knew nothing about him before that but he received a Pulitzer and lots of accolades. 2y
Graywacke @Suet624 please don‘t expect me to remember that one poem! 🙂 But he does have an entry. 2y
Suet624 @Graywacke haha. No, I don‘t expect you to remember and, in fact, I don‘t like the guy after reading his daughter‘s book. 2y

I‘ve started this anthology from 1996 (and I‘ve owned it long enough that there was a Borders bookmark inside).

slategreyskies Ah, I used to work at Borders. That brings back memories! :) 2y
Graywacke @slategreyskies i do miss it. I miss the wonder of bookstores. 2y

TheSpineView I like this one. I like the line “offering his future to folks he did not know.“ I have never though of marriage like that, but in a way it is. Great choice! 5y
Lcsmcat @TheSpineView I agree! My 20-something self had no idea. 😀 I like too how it‘s a little melancholy, but also affirming. Kind of like life. 5y

Free (audio)books! Get your free (audio)books!

Just heard about this program and had to share. While this is geared to YA readers, there are a couple classics. And the list looks interesting no matter what genre.

Enjoy!

Cinfhen Thanks so much for sharing 🙌🏻🎧 6y
Sweettartlaura @Cinfhen no problem! I‘m trying to download right now - having a little trouble 😕. Hopefully I can figure it out quickly. 6y
Sweettartlaura Got it - had to try it a couple times - at first it told me the file wasn‘t supported. I checked the FAQs to see if I missed something. No, so I tried again. No problem now - Whoo hoo! 6y

I went to the library....promised myself I'd look for the 2 books I really want to read....if they dont have them in, I'm not getting any.....
They didnt have either book in.

Then this happened.....

Graywacke Understand...I couldn‘t have left the Kahlo bio alone there either. Fun stack! 6y

David Colosi, “Sun with Issues”
“Remember:
I‘m stuck in place, you‘re moving at :my: pace,
You think this is heinous, spend some time on Mercury or Venus.”
My goal started as a poem a day but I think instead, I want poems each day until one makes me stop and think, makes me read it again, makes me appreciate it enough that I will highlight the page, an action I still thrill to take because it feels like sacrilege.

rwmg I still can't bring myself to write in a book. If it needs notes, I'll have to get the ebook 6y
kgriffith It actually was poetry that broke me of that same feeling — I took a class not expecting to enjoy or want to reread any of it so I was highlighting more at first so I could find what I needed for my papers. I‘ve also discovered the joy of erasable highlighters 😉 6y
