Poison Study
Poison Study | Maria V. Snyder
About to be executed for murder, Yelena is offered an extraordinary reprieve. She'll eat the best meals, have rooms in the palace- and risk assassination by anyone trying to kill the Commander of Ixia. And so Yelena chooses to become a food taster. But the chief of security, leaving nothing to chance, deliberately feeds her Butterfly's Dust and only by appearing for her daily antidote will she delay an agonizing death from the poison. As Yelena tries to escape her new dilemma, disasters keep mounting. Rebels plot to seize Ixia and Yelena develops magical powers she can't control. Her life is threatened again and choices must be made. But this time the outcomes aren't so clear.

Christmas books!! And, incidentally, Christmas games because tabletop games are my other addiction! Super stoked to have the set of Snyder's Chronicles of Ixia, as I really enjoyed those. Also the new Benedict Society book and the gorgeous Minalima edition of The Secret Garden!! ❤️ I'm a Dominion addict (this is expansion 7!). Also Azul and Onirim (not pictured). Sooo excited!!

curiouserandcurioser @TheAromaofBooks i got my daughter that The Secret Garden book for Christmas and i received the Alice in Wonderland one from her and my husband-rhey are stunning!! We also love the Mysterious Benedict Society 1mo

curiouserandcurioser @TheAromaofBooks we live Benedict Society so much too!! The Alice in Wonderland book is stunning! 1mo
Deifio I got a couple of games too! Dominion is a great game. I liked Onirim too. Haven't played Azul, but it's game of the year in Germany. 1mo
TheAromaofBooks @Deifio - Well, I organized my new Dominion expansion into my old stuff: I now have seven expansions which comes to almost 18 POUNDS of Dominion across two boxes 😆 I may love organizing & sorting it all out almost as much as playing. 😁 Azul has fun dynamics. I always play some solo games (playing as two players) to get the hang of the basic mechanics of a new game, & I'm excited to play this one with actual people. The game itself is lovely! 1mo

It took a while for me to get into this one but once I did, it was hard to put down. I tried pairing with the audio but I didn‘t like the narrator. Yelena was a strong character and I‘m looking forward to seeing what happens in the next book. 🌟🌟🌟🌟

I_Love_This_Book! 😍 I can't believe how little people are talking about this. This is so good! I just have to order the rest of the series. 😁 Good thing about finding books this old is that no need to wait the publishing of next parts of the series because they are already out. 😊📚

This took me longer than planned to finish but I never lost interest in it. The premise is interesting. The worldbuilding gave me a lot to think about. And that slow burning, slightly angsty romance was fabulous.

The beginning of this book was marvelous. It caught my attention and held it through the end.
The reason this isn‘t a ‘Pick‘ for me is due to the magic system and the ‘big‘ plot twist with the Commander.
I fell in love with the poison aspect and wish that it would have remained the star of the show. Not that the magic system is bad per say. It just wasn‘t my cup of tea. 3/5 ⭐️
I will not be picking up the rest of the series. For it ended nicely.

This one is going back a bit. Maria was my classmate and critique partner when we were both studying for our masters at Seton Hill University. Her talent and professionalism was apparent from the get go and her career and work have been on the rise since. I remain enamoured of and attached to this series and love where she has gone with it. I eagerly await her next creation.

I liked this book, but didn‘t love it. It may just be that I can take or leave fantasy genre in general. The book was well-written, with good characters and interesting plot, and dystopian elements that I usually like...yet I had to push myself to finish it. I also disliked Yelena‘s romance subplot. I think the story would have been more interesting without it. But I would still recommend this book to others. It was good, just not my thing.

I‘m seeing signs of a romance subplot developing. Ugh, please, no. This story would be more interesting without it.

I‘m finding this book harder going than I expected from a YA novel. The writing is good, the plot‘s fairly interesting, and yet I have to really focus on it to keep reading it.

I tried something different with this photo!

On another note, this book+series is basically amazing and I think everyone has to read them!! Mind, I only read the first part of the series (first three books) but didn‘t bother with the sequels. I though the end was pretty good, and I didn‘t wanna read about anyone I like dying 😂 do any of you do that? Not finish a series cause you‘re scared of what will happen?

After DNF'ing Throne of Glass, tried this as a recommended example of how it should be done. Plot is practically identical and the premise in both books is intriguing and has potential. I DID finish this one, but it was still lacking. While it didn't irritate/cause hilarity at it's ridiculousness/induce snorts of derision at it's utter woefulness, it seemed to me lifeless, bland, shallow & totally unengaging. Writing was at best work-a-day...☟☟☟

readingjedi ...at worst earnestly clunky. Not that it was totally awful mind you, it just kinda passed me by in a not unpleasant, ho-hum, borderline tedious manner. 2y
thegirlwiththelibrarybag Aww bummer! I loved this, but I‘ve always been worried about rereading it (she wrote an initial trilogy and then many years later, a second trilogy) since I‘m sure my tastes have developed and changed over time (it‘s pretty old - must be early 00s) Have you heard of 2y

I got the rest of my black friday orders today! Yay! 😁 Only one slightly weird problem; they sent me an extra book that is in Swedish. A nice thought. Only my Swedish skills are not good enough to read it. I get the title though and that it contains the first chapters of the real book. So if I read in Swedish I could try this and then order the complete book if I liked it. Such a good idea! Such a frustrating situation! 🇸🇪📃

Accused of murder (She's no bad girl, it was self defense.) and awaiting her death sentence, Yelena doesn't have much to look forward to. Then suddenly she is given a reprieve- a chance to escape death temporarily & possibly indefinitely. Yelena becomes the Commander's food taster, which means she has to learn what poisons there are & how they taste so she can protect the Commander from attack. Cool character; great story.

A girl who is to be executed, with the option to escape death by becoming a food taster. Aimed at teenagers / YA. I quite enjoyed. The story was predictable in parts, but had good momentum, & I found I still enjoyed anyway, enough that I think I'll read more in the series.
The protagonist has had a hard upbringing, & there could be some triggers for some people, but it doesn't really go into detail of what occurs so it wasn't an issue for me.

This one was hard, but I have gone with Yelena and Janco from the Chronicles of Ixia. Along with Ari, these two have a strong friendship and would do anything to help the other out. It is also a completely platonic relationship which is great!

This quote can be found on T-Shirts sold by the author, and is based on the runes written on the blade gifted to Yelena. Friends for the win!

I was given a copy from a friend after a long stretch with nothing good to read - and my reading drought was ended! It starts with a fantastic centre of the action scene. Making you love the girl who's in trouble but not a damsel in distress. Then ended the alpha male type who isn't there as 'only' book boyfriend material!
