I enjoyed that the attention was way more on all the various people in this town. I did not like that there had to be romantic feelings between Freya and her intendent. The murderer is suddenly revealed at about 400/550 pages in. And that's that. The ending was a bit disappointing, it kind of sizzled out.
549 pages; TBR since 7/7/2019.

The draw for me with this series, is how Simon changes over time, his relationships, his family dynamics, his job, his attitude. The mysteries are good, and complex and things don't always get resolved, but that's fine.

I do love this series. Simon is so fascinating, maddening and way too much like me, alas.

I really, really enjoyed this book; now I have a whole new series to get wrapped up in. I‘ve only read Hill‘s literary memoir, HOWARD‘S END IS ON THE LANDING. She is a gifted writer!
This translates into a very literary police procedural that is more about each of the characters, including the victims, than it is about the actual murders. More please! Thank you @Adventures-of-a-French-Reader for recommending! #hoopla

Chosen by my mystery book club, this book was a great discovery. I felt it was a far more realistic depiction of police work than most of the books out there. Very well written. Susan Hill sets perfectly the decor for the series, at the end of this book, we really get a clear image of the community of Lafferton.

EvieBee This sounds great! Just checked it out from the library. Hopefully I get to it soon. 2y
Adventures-of-a-French-Reader @EvieBee Hope you'll enjoy it as much as I did ;) 2y
EvieBee Had to come back to tell you that I started the audiobook and am already an hour in. It‘s great! I love slow paced mysteries like this! Thanks so much for the recommendation! 2y
Adventures-of-a-French-Reader @EvieBee I also love slow paced mysteries, as I tend to find them more realistic. With fast paced mysteries and thrillers, I tend to get annoyed, and roll my eyes a lot at the lack of realism... But I know that few people like slow paced books. 2y

#AChangeOfCircumstance #SusanHill #MarvellousMarch #BookSpinBingo

I would like to thank NetGalley & The Overlook Press for an advanced copy of A Change of Circumstance by Susan Hill for honest review. This is the 11th installment of the Simon Serrailler series. I have read the whole series thus far & can honestly say that it is one of my favorite series that I look forward to reading. Susan Hill is a master of characterization and storytelling.

EadieB The Serrailler Family characters seem like members of your own family. Simon, a son of two doctors, is a Detective Chief Superintendent of the Lafferton Police. Simon's sister, Cat Deerbon, has three children and is now married to Chief Constable Kieron Bright. She is a General Practitioner in the National Health Society. When a young man dies of a heroine overdose, Simon realizes that a drug network has infiltrated the local schools. (edited) 2y
EadieB Will Simon be able to crush this network and keep Lafferton save from the drugs? The plot is dark and gripping and the story keeps the pages turning until the very end. Simon's personal life is also a major part of the book as Rachel Wyatt, Simon's ex-lover, returns to Lafferton. Can't wait to read the next installment in order to see where this relationship is going. 2y
EadieB Susan Hill knows how to keep you invested in this series. If you like crime novels with family drama, then you will enjoy this series. 2y

Another fabulous series I discovered this year. It‘s an exceptionally literary mystery series with an unusual detective at the center. The mystery itself was a good one, with certain aspects made clear from the beginning, but the ending was VERY unexpected. Another book crossed off my #BookSpinBingo list!

My bedside table ready for Christmas. The bedroom is my favorite spot to read.

TheAromaofBooks Yay!!! 2y
tracey38 I used the same bookworm planner this year. 😊 2y
MittenGirlPeach @tracey38 someone (maybe you?) posted late last year that you always used a book planner from the Etsy shop “peanut butter taco,” and I looked into them and fell in love. During the year I bought three of them, two for swaps and one for me for 2022. I used the bibliophile2021 this past year, and I liked it, but I love this one so much, and buying from small shops is awesome. And the shop is in the Detroit area, so even better! 2y
