This one is for fun, love me a Slow Horses tale. That is our new pup Goldie playing with hubby in the background. She is a handful being a 1 year old Lab rescue from Kalamazoo SPCA, she came up from Louisiana so experiencing snow for the first time and loves frolicking in the deep parts.

Thoroughly entertaining spy caper with quite a few laughs as well as chills. I particularly enjoyed the nods to some real life characters. This is the latest in the series, chosen by my IRL book group for this month. I‘ve only read the first in the series previously and I don‘t think I‘d have enjoyed it much more if I‘d read all of them, but I do think I‘d have enjoyed it less if I‘d not read the first one.

I‘m posting one book a day from my massive collection. No description, no reason for why I want to read it.

Distracted by shiny reading things today. Pushing everything aside so I can read the next installment of the Slow Horses. 👍😍😊😁

The 9th in Mick Herron‘s SLOUGH HOUSE spy thriller series is a game changer for the slow horses as they take casualties (including a fatality) and scores are settled. It has the sharp wit, savage violence, and political skewering of the previous books but some of the writing isn‘t as clear as it could be, and some of the slow horses remain underdeveloped. That said it still held my attention and the stunning ending makes me impatient for book 10.

Little Free Library find last night while walking Penny the dog. I already have copies of all but the tagged and might re-home two because I have those same editions even. But I couldn‘t resist grabbing them all. 😆

Ruthiella @LeahBergen I love the cheesy covers! 3mo
Bookwomble I've collected the Pan editions where I can. I was surprised at the graphic violence in Casino Royale given its age. I haven't finished the series, yet, but I was impressed that Daniel Craig's interpretation seems to be the closest to Fleming's original. 3mo

Ruthiella @Bookwomble I‘ve not seen any of the newer films but I do remember the torture scene from Casino Royale, pretty brutal. 😱 3mo

Berlin Game | Len Deighton
post image
Pickpick

I love spy fiction, so it's bizarre that this is my first Len Deighton. I enjoyed it so much that I immediately ordered books 2+3 in the trilogy. Bernard Sansom is a senior officer in the service running a source in E Berlin who wants to escape, but London wants him to carry on. It emerges that someone is passing info to the Russians, but can Bernard find the source. Gripping to the very climactic end. Excited that I have so many more bks to find.

Cathythoughts Exciting reading ahead for you 👍🏻😁 3mo

Today has been a #terribletuesday (it‘s totally an Alexander Day and I‘m ready to move to Australia-IYKYK). To get me through the rest of this day, I‘m turning to a much beloved author and a favorite audiobook narrator (Simon Vance). My favorite thing about this one is all the time we get with “Mother Russia” Connie Sachs. I love Connie so much. So. Much.

All the Old Knives: A Novel | Olen Steinhauer
post image

I like the Milo Weaver series by Olen Steinhauer and liked the movie made from All The Old Knives, since this book has been on my shelves for awhile I decided to read as I'm in the mood for another spy novel.

This was so good think I will rewatch the movie based on the book.

I probably shouldn‘t mark this reread as a review, but consider this a review of the audio narrated by Simon Vance. Vance is perfect for le Carre‘s novels. This one is not as adventurous or glamorous as his more well known novels, but the author himself notes that this is closer to reality than Spy or Tinker Tailor. It‘s petty, sad, and filled with egos that desperately want to be relevant but aren‘t. Le Carre‘s writing is brilliant, as always.
