Reading the 2018 Short Story Advent Calendar (#SSAC2018), one story per day from December 1-25, is partly what inspired my next reading project: one chapter per day of The Tale of Genji (starting January 1). The stories in the calendar average 14 pages in length, while the chapters in #Genji average about 21 pages, but that‘s still manageable. Plus, I will have company: @Cindymylifeislit @Daisey @llwheeler @bianca @saresmoore @bookandcat

jmofo I‘m inspired to read this but I think I won‘t keep up! But I‘ll love seeing what you think! 6y
Lindy There are still copies available in the 2018 print run of the SSAC. It‘s a beautifully designed collection, with each story in a separate booklet. More here: https://www.hingstonandolsen.com/store/the-2018-short-story-advent-calendar 6y
Lindy @jmofo Vicarious members are welcome. I will add each chapter number to the Genji hashtag to make it easier to find relevant posts for people who are reading at a different pace. 😊 6y

jmofo @Lindy that‘s super thoughtful! Thanks! 6y
mhillis Great idea! I‘d like to try to read with you too!! 6y
Lindy @mhillis Wonderful! Would you like me to tag you (along with the rest of our group) when I post about Genji? 6y
mhillis @Lindy Yes, that would be great! Now I just need to get a copy of the book! Are you reading a certain edition? (edited) 6y
Lindy @mhillis I saw it free online in Project Gutenberg. It‘s also in Hoopla, if your public library has a subscription. I‘m doing a combination of print (when I‘m at home) and ebook (when I‘m travelling). 6y
mhillis @Lindy OK, sounds good. Thanks! 6y
SoniaC I plan to give this a try. Hoping I can keep up! 6y

I enjoyed my short story advent calendar so much that I've decided to keep on reading a short story every morning. This plan should last until I hit a novelette-length piece in either of these in-progress anthologies, at which point I'll procrastinate like all hell and drift away from the project.

Or I'll switch to another anthology or magazine with something shorter on offer. Whichever.

Lindy I‘m feeling somewhat similar. Loved #ssac2018 so now I‘m taking on a chapter per day of 6y
xicanti @Lindy I saw! I might join you if I can source a copy quickly enough. 6y
Lindy @xicanti Do you have access to Hoopla via your public library? Ebook copies are there. It‘s also free online at Project Gutenberg. 6y
xicanti @Lindy my library isn't subscribed to Hoopla's ebook catalogue, unfortunately. For some reason, my Project Gurenberg search came up blank, but I've requested a library copy that I hope will arrive in early January. 6y
Lindy @xicanti Excellent! The Royall Tyler translation is on Project Gutenberg. Maybe you can find it at this link: https://archive.org/details/TheTaleOfGenji 6y

24th short story in the series, Christmas Eve, 1944 by Luis Alberto Urrea. O Holy Night in a church basement in the middle of incoming mortars. Based on the author‘s mother‘s war stories as a “Donut Dollie”. I‘ll never hear the music again without thinking of this short story. #ssac2018 https://www.hingstonandolsen.com/2018

The End of the Story | Liliana Heker

Pickpick

This review is for Heker‘s short story “Strategies Against Sleeping”. Senora Eloisa is very tired. She is returning to Azul by car riding with a salesman friend of her daughter‘s future father-in-law; however he wants to talk- wants her to keep him awake. She tells a story about a beggar in the street carrying a fat baby- she is so tired. What Eloisa relates causes him to set her by the side of the road, in the rain. Translated from Spanish.

Lindy 🌹This is a powerful story. #ssac2018 6y
Booksnchill Agreed- did you read the author interview on the Hingston page? 6y
