Pickpick

Popovic was part of the movement (Otpor) that ousted Milosevic from power in Serbia, and this book is a handbook of sorts—taking principles from Otpor and discussing how those principles could be applied in a variety of contexts, using nonviolent activism and resistance to effect change. The wealth of examples he offers are inspiring and often hilarious. I can‘t help but wonder if the Portland Frog was inspired by this book… ⤵️

BarbaraJean (Cont‘d) I read this with an online book group over the summer, and I‘m so glad I did. The final session was a discussion with the author—rich with relevant and practical ideas for our current context in the USA. 1mo
JamieArc I read this years ago when it first came out and I think about it all the time. I think it‘s been the book I recommend most these days. I, too, thought of the connection between Portland and this book. I‘ve been hoping someone would get into some creative protest! 1mo
BarbaraJean @JamieArc Right?! I just keep talking about it. I even talked about it with my (conservative but horrified by Trump) dad as we saw protests over the weekend here in the LA area. I was so glad to see the creative protests in Portland and am hoping that kind of action gets more prominent. 4w

The 48 Laws Of Power | Robert Greene

This book is way too long (23 hrs audio) and the extensive historical contexts are unnecessary to me. I would like to hear a more succinct version where I could focus more on the actual “laws”. The book also has a very spiteful theme, as if everyone is out to get others in their pursuits for power, however, it did give me perspective of how some may think. If I hadn‘t put this on audio for my commute to work book, I never would have finished it.

I follow Lauren Grubaugh Thomas‘ Substack, A Soulful Revolution, and today‘s piece was hopeful and encouraging to me, as I feel somewhat at a loss over effective action in the face of current events. I‘ll link her piece below. She highlighted the tagged book and an upcoming series of online book discussions, if anyone‘s interested in joining in. I just put the book on hold at the library!
